Abstract

1,098,470. Rolling. M. G. SENDZIMIK. June 7, 1966, No. 25334/66. Heading B3M. A rolling mill includes pairs of working rolls 2, 2<SP>1</SP>; 3, 3<SP>1</SP> &c. of different sizes, positioned around backing rolls 4 and 4<SP>1</SP>, each pair being selectively movable to a working position between the backing rolls. The working rolls are supported at their ends by chocks 7, Fig. 2, positioned within cages 6 encircling the backing roll journals and movable independently of the backing rolls. Each cage is indexable by means of a gear 8 or 8<SP>1</SP> attached to a shaft which is rotated by means of further gears 10, 10<SP>1</SP>, while clutches 12, 100 and 100<SP>1</SP> permit individual or common adjustment of the cages using one or both driving shafts 107, 107<SP>1</SP>. Locks 102 or selsyns may be used to control the indexing. The pair of working rolls is frictionally driven from the backing rolls, the remaining working rolls which are out of use being spring loaded out of contact with the backing rolls. Alternatively, if pre-rotation of the working rolls is required, the rolls are normally spring pressed against the backing rolls and are releasable by cams or fluid pressure. The working rolls are readily releasable from their chocks, and can additionally be ground or polished in position while a further pair of rolls is in operation. Rolls of tungsten carbide can be employed, the length of the rolls being appropriate to the width of stock being rolled. Lateral binding of the work rolls in use can be minimized by using bearing bars (Fig. 4, not shown) between adjacent rolls, cylinders or other fluid, mechanical, or electrical devices urging the bars apart. Idler rolls may alternatively be located between adjacent rolls 56, 60. In a further mill, Fig. 6, alternative clusters of rolls are mounted in an indexable rigid beam 24, a driving roll 104, or a further rigid beam being positioned beneath the workpiece 5. A number of spaced hydraulic cylinders permit adjustment of the crown of the work roll or rolls. In place of the conventional stands having an hydraulic or mechanical screwdown, a prestressed stand may be employed, the roll gap adjustment being effected by screwed wedges 42, 43, Fig. 10, by interchangeable shims 48, or by the prestressing cylinders 31, 41. The cylinders 31 urge the lower chocks 37 upwards, while cylinder 41 urges the chocks 36 downwardly.
