Abstract

1,176,132. Rolling mill. UNITED ENG. & FOUNDRY CO. 24 Jan., 1967 [10 Feb., 1966], No. 5974/66. Heading B3M. [Also in Division G3] A rolling mill has variable prestressing means to keep the gap constant which comprises a piston cylinder assembly 23 which is activated to oppose the separating force of the work between the rolls 19, 20 by a load cell 26 between the upper chock 14 and the housing 10. The work rolls 19, 20 are mounted in chocks 17, 18 mounted in openings 16 in the back-up chocks 14, 15. The chocks 14, 15, 17, 18 are urged apart by roll balance piston cylinder assemblies 21, 22. The gap is initially set by screw down means comprising rods 31, threaded in nuts 33 in the housing and abutting compression bars, 34 which are positioned in parallel channels 27 in the upper chock and extend to the lower chock. The upper ends of the rods 31 are driven in synchronism by a motor 35. To make the parts of the mill associated with the prestressing cylinder 23 readily yieldable each of the lower chocks 15 is provided with spring 40 and plunger 41 mechanism against which the compression bars 34 abuts. As the working load P on the rolls 19, 20 increases as indicated by the load cell 26 the prestressing force F in the assembly 23 is increased, the force F always being greater than the force P. Details of the inter-relationship between the moduli of the mill parts and the applied forces are given. The signal from the load cell 26 is supplied to a multiplying amplifier (58), Fig. 4 (not shown), where it is combined with a signal (Y + 1) from a series of amplifiers supplied with signals M R , M c represent elastic constants of the mill from manually adjustable potentiometers (46), (52). The signal M R is corrected for roll radius and strip width.
