Abstract

1,194,328. Rolling. UNITED ENG. & FOUNDRY CO. 8 Sept., 1967 [9 Sept., 1966], No. 40488/66. Heading B3M. [Also in Division G3] A rolling mill includes a cylinder assembly 29 between a lower chock 14 and housing 10, the assembly providing both a rolling force and a force which stresses a group of parts 31-35 located between a crosshead 27 and the housing. The parts include rods 31, springs 33, and load cells 35 measuring the load in the rods. From the load in either the cells 35 or in a load cell 24 measuring the rolling load, and knowing the moduli of both the group of parts and of the housing and roll assemblies, the force in the assembly 29 can be varied to produce a desired thickness in a rolled workpiece. In an example of a control circuit, Fig. 6, both the rolling load F (from a transducer 40) and the load Q in the rods (from load cells 35) are fed, together with the desired workpiece thickness (set on a potentiometer 43), and the no-load roll gap (sensed from the screwdown rotor 42), to an amplifier 45, in the form of an error signal e. A signal from the amplifier passes through a differentiating circuit 49 to control the pressure in cylinder assembly 29. The group of parts can take different forms (Figs. 2-5, not shown) such as springs positioned between inward extensions of the housings and a cross-head or chock.
