Abstract

[Also in Division G3] A method of rolling stock in at least two passes includes controlling the roll gap of the penultimate of the two passes, such that the stock will be presented to the last of the two passes with a cross-section which will result in a product having a desired cross-section after passing through the last pass. As applied to a reversing stand 11, Fig. 5, the height and width of the stock 5 are measured by a gauge 13 during the penultimate pass, and the values are fed to a controller 12. Also fed to the controller are the desired stock output after the final pass, the size of the stock prior to rolling, the roll diameters for the penultimate pass, and the spread coefficient of the stock. The controller, which may be of digital or analogue type, adjusts the stand to produce a stock cross-section suitable for the final pass. An automatic gauge control may be provided for the final pass, if this is warranted, in order to keep the pass at a desired value. A similar controller 28, Fig. 7, is used In a continuous mill to control the penultimate pass 24. The dimensions of the stock are measured after the final pass 25 by a gauge 27 and fed to the controller. If desired, a further gauge 26, either before or after the stand 24, also feeds information to the controller. The gap in stand 24 is ideally set such that the product assumes the desired final cross-section after stand 25. As before, an automatic gauge control may be provided for stand 25, if the spring of the stand warrants it. The stock is arranged to be free of interstand tension during rolling.
