Abstract

1295636 Measuring displacement electrically DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO Ltd 16 Jan 1970 [13 Dec 1968] 59329/68 Heading G1N A transducer comprising two relatively displaceable parts 8, 9 mounted in body 10 slidable in cylinder 7 of a piston 3 is first moved in cylinder 7 to an initial position so that the output from the transducer is linear when the part 9 is moved relative to part 8 when the piston 3 moves to abut part 9 against finger 6, and then body portion 8 is fixed relative to cylinder 7 for measuring displacement of the core part 9. The piston 3 is positioned between a rigid part of the housing of a rolling mill and one of the chocks supporting one end of a roll of the mill. To position the transducer in its operating position fluid is fed into annular chambers 15, 16 to move cylindrical body 10 up or down in the cylinder. When the signal from the transducer decreases to a predetermined level the fluid-flow to chambers 15, 16 is stopped and the body 10 is held in position relative to cylinder 7 by friction pad 19. Variations in dimensions 'A' indicative of the thickness of the material between the rolls vary the relative positions of parts 8, 9 of the transducer to provide an electrical signal. In a second embodiment the transducer is carried by a displaceable member, Fig. 2 (not shown) connected to a crosshead displaceable by a piston and cylinder device.
