Abstract

1349534 Measuring workpiece dimensions electrically BENDIX CORP 14 May 1971 [14 May 1970] 15053/71 Headings G1M and G1N A device 11 for gauging the dimensions of a workpiece W comprises a housing 40 within which a rod-like member 41 is supported by an air bearing formed between the member and a porous, graphite sleeve through which air is supplied from the passage 60 and which member is movable towards or away from the workpiece by air pressure from passage 67 or 71 acting on a surface 70 or 72 of a piston 65 fixed to the member which is maintained at a predetermined distance 81 from the workpiece by jet 82 of air flowing from passage 80 to chamber 52 and through passages 76, 75 and restrictor 83. In use, the workpiece is rotated and the member follows its surface contours at the predetermined distance and the movements of the member due to irregularity ovality of the workpiece are measured by signals from a differential transformer 42 of which the core 43 is secured to the member and the windings 45A to the housing. The restrictor 83 may be dispersed with.
