Apparatus for grinding recesses in the inner wall of a hollow cylinder has a part which can be brought into contact with said inner wall and which is capable of deflection as a function of the force applied to it by the inner wall and means for measuring such deflection and hence said force by which fine adjustment of the grinding depth can be obtained. The workpiece 2, e.g. a bushing for a gas lubricated bearing, is held by a chuck 3. A grinding machine 5, comprising a grinding wheel 8 on a spindle 7 in a bushing 6, is mounted on a slide 4<SP>1</SP> transversely adjustable on a carriage 4 longitudinally movable on the machine frame 1. The movement of the carriage 4 traverses the grinding wheel along the workpiece, and adjustment of the slide 4<SP>1</SP> varies the grinding pressure. The chuck 3 remains stationary or, for wide recesses, is given a small angular to-and-fro movement manually or automatically. Surrounding the grinding wheel spindle bushing 6 is a holder 9 radially adjustable relative thereto by screws 11 and carrying a sliding shoe 10. The holder 9 is electrically insulated from the bushing 6 by plates 16. Contact of the shoe 10 with the bore of the workpiece 2 is indicated by a lamp 15. The deflection of the show 10 under the grinding pressure is measured by a strain gauge 18 and an indicator 19 or by other means, e.g. pneumatically, electrically or magnetically.
