In a scriber assembly for apparatus in which the tracking movement of a feeler (not shown) around a standard workpiece produces corresponding relative movement between a scriber 27 and a scribe plate (also not shown) the scriber is carried at one end of a scriber arm 24 pivoted on a mounting 17 which is adjustable in two separate horizontal directions. The scriber 27 is mounted in a transparent portion 25 of the arm 24, which is pivoted on a block 17 movable in two perpendicular directions under the control of micrometer screws. 10, 19. A counterweight 26 balances the weight of the arm 24 and a screw 34 acting on this weight can be used to remove the scriber 27 from the recording surface when not in use. A weight 32 is slidable on a bar 31 carried by the arm 24 and may be adjustable lengthwise of the arm to control the scribing pressure. A conduit 29, 28 supplies air from a blower 30 to the scriber point to disperse any accumulation of dust.
