[Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Group XX] Profile marking or checking apparatus comprising a clamp for the article whose profile is to be taken, a pointer adapted to follow the profile and a support for the pointer movable in the plane of or parallel to that of the profile to be checked and a scribe carried by the support is characterised in that the support for the pointer and the scribe rests on and is movable over a flat datum surface parallel to the plane of the profile and is not restricted by any mechanical linkage. The article whose profile is to be reproduced or checked, e.g. the turbine blade 1, is held by screws 4 in a clamp 2 which is adjustably mounted on a yoke 18 on a pedestal 15 upstanding from a base 16 which also carries the smoked glass 11 on which the reproduction is to be traced or checked. The flats 20 of the pedestal 15 may be marked with a suitable scale and a co-operating vernier may be provided on the jaws 19. The pedestal may be screw-threaded or furnished with rack-teeth co-operating with a jack nut or a pinion on the clamp. A pointer 5 adapted to follow the profile of the blade 1 is mounted on the support 6 which is movable in a plane parallel to that of the profile to be checked. A carrier 10 for the scribe 7 in the form of a leaf spring projects from the support 6 and may be raised upwards to move the scribe 7 clear of the panel 11. A wedge 12 is provided for locking the carrier 10 in its raised position. Both pedestal base 16 and pointer support 6 have accurately machined flat base surfaces adapted to rest or slide on a flat datum surface. Alternatively, the base 16 may provide the flat datum surface on which the support 6 rides.
