855,824. Gauging by optical means. SCHIESS A.G. June 24, 1958 [June 24, 1957], No. 20116/58. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XXII] A vertical lathe &c. comprises a telescope 10, mounted on a slide 7 adjustable on the toolcarriage 2 to align the telescope with the edge of the tool 5, and an optical instrument 12 also mounted on the slide and spaced from the telescope to enable the diameter of the work to be measured against a stationary scale 13. The tool carriage 2 is movable on a cross-beam 1 and carries a vertically movable tool bar 3. The reading on the scale 13 is zero when the telescope 10 is over the centre of the lathe table. The position of the slide 7 can be checked by a spirit level 16. The telescope may carry a spotlight to illuminate the tool.
