Sept. 4, 1944, No. 16854: [Class 106 (ii)] In a linear dimension gauge, fixed and movable heads, with means for measuring their relative displacement, are mounted upon a base ; the fixed head is adjustable upon, but adapted to be secured to, the base when a measurement is being made, and the movable head, which is spring loaded to move it away from the fixed head, floats upon balls held apart by springs, the. balls riding between V-grooves in the opposite sides of the base and in top and bottom bars forming part of the movable head. In the gauge shown (Fig. 1), a fixed head a, .a Vernier attachment d for fine adjustment of the former, and a movable head b slide on a base c and may be clamped thereto by screws g, g<1> and y respectively. The movable head (Figs. 1 and 4) floats on balls q which ride between V-grooves in the base and in top and bottom bars s and is moved away from the fixed head by a spring acting on a pin r. Brackets i, j, carrying gauging tips k, are clamped to the fixed and movable heads respectively by screws u and are reversible for measuring large dimensions when the gauging tips may also be reversed upon the brackets. For measuring small dimensions, the gauging tips may be carried on adaptor fittings upon the brackets. A dial gauge 2 (Fig. 3) may be secured anywhere along the base and has a feeler 3 upon which an abutment 4 attached to the movable head bears. Alternatively, an electro limit or like remote-operated gauge may be employed, the coil unit replacing the dial gauge and its moving core-being actuated by the abutment 4.
