Abstract
567,401. Linear - dimension gauges. KAPELLA, Ltd., and COOKE, E. A. May 13, 1943, No. 7666. [Class 106 (ii)] A linear dimension gauge comprises two gauging elements D, E carried by a common main supporting bar D' mounted on parallel spring ligaments F<9> so arranged that the bar, though movable in the general direction of its length, always remains parallel to itself, one gauging element D being normally fixed with respect to the main supporting bar whereas the other E is yieldingly carried thereby, an electromagnetic device being provided for controlling indicating or recording means, the device having two relatively-movable parts actuated by relative movements of the gauging elements. The main bar D' has end brackets F<7>, F<8> supported by spring filaments F<9> from projections C<6> on a carriage C adjustable vertically on a screw-threaded shaft C<4> by an external handle. The gauging element D is adjustable along the main bar D' and is locked thereto by a bolt D<9>. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, a second bar E<4> is supported from the end brackets of the main bar by spring filaments E<5>, and carries near each end a pillar H<8> supporting through a spring filament H<9> an adaptor E', opposed by a vertical bar H<10>. One of the adaptors holds the second gauging, element E which is adjusted finely by the co-operation of the bar H<10> with a screw J<3> controlled by a hand wheel J<5>. The bars D<7> and E<4> are urged in opposite directions by a spring K<2>. The bar E<4> carries two coils L<1>, L<2> in one or other of the circuits described in Specification 541,627, [Group XXXVIII], the reluctance of which is affected by movement of an armature M carried by the bar D<7> As shown, the apparatus is arranged for internal measurements, but the element D may be turned round and moved along the main bar, and the element E may be turned round and secured to the alternative adapter E<7>. In the modification shown in Fig. 10, the adaptors are secured to the pillars H<8> by spring filaments S<3>, S<4> arranged at right angles. The coils L<1>, L<2> are carried by the bar D' and a ball M<4> on the armature M<5> projects so as to bear against one or other of two blocks G<6> on the bar E<4>. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the bar E<4> is dispensed with. A unit Q is adjustable along the main bar P<1> and is secured thereto by bolts P<3>. Slidable in guides of the unit is a casing W carrying the electromagnetic device and the element E mounted on a spring filament W'. The casing W is adjusted along the guides by a nut Q<6> co-operating with a screw Q<5> and a flange Q<3> or by the knurled screw Q<4>, according to whether the casing is more easily accessible from the left or the right of the outer casing. The armature M<5> of the coils L', L<2> is secured to the element E and is adjustable through a spring M<3> by a stud M<2>. In a slight modification, the element E may be pivoted to the bottom of the casing W and may constitute the armature M<5>.
