1 Claim.
This invention relates to a new and improved tool for dressing grinding Iwheels extremely accurately to any angle desired.
Objects of the invention include the provision of a sine bare having an accurate straight edge base which is used to support the tool as on a machine bed and including an angularly adjustable tool slide having a special dust-proof construction and mounting a tool holder with means to feed the same thereon; and the provision of a sine bar as above described which is adapted to be angularly adjusted to an approximate degree and thereafter accurately adjusted by means of gage blocks for instance of the Johansson type, the gage blocks then being removed and the tool being locked in the gaged position, whereupon the tool is set relative the grinding wheel, the latter being supported in a fixture or on a grinding machine in the usual manner, and the tool may be fed to dress the wheel.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating the invention, parts being in section;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a section of 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The present invention comprises a sine bar having a straight edge I which is used as a base and mounts thereon at one end thereof a pair of upstanding ears I2. Ears I 2 lcarry an accurate plug or rod I4 therebetween and this plug or rod supports one end of a frame generally indicated at I6, the other end of the frame being arranged for angular adjustment of the frame about the longitudinal axis of the plug or rod I4. The adjusted end of frame I6 carries an accurate plug or rod I8 fixed thereto as by screws 20, it being noted that the plugs or rods I4 and I8 contact the two sides of each off a pair of notches as at 22 in frame I6. The ears I2 may provide a zero point for a scale on the frame for obtaining a rough setting of the frame I6 relative to the base II).
The frame I6 is formed to provide a guideway at 24 for guiding a block 26 there along, block 26 being contained by a pair of gibs 28. The block 26 is provided with a pair of longitudinally extending plates 3D which cover and close the guideway so that in the region of the tool post 32 dust cannot enter the frame I6. The block 26 is provided with a bored and tapped hole 34 receiving a screw threaded shaft 36, the latter extending thru a bearing block 38 secured in the frame. The shaft is adapted to be rotated by any 2 means such as a handle received by a square boss 40 on the shaft to travel the tool 42 along the guideway.
Any desired or convenient means may be utilized for securing the frame I6 in its angularly adjusted position relative to the sine bar base I0, but it is preferred to use a linkage 44 for this purpose, it being necessary merely to tighten the screws 46 in order to maintain the desired setting.
The Wheel to vbe dressed is represented at 48. The frame I6 is angularly adjusted at the approximate setting desired and then Johansson or the like gage blocks '50 are set on the sine bar and contact plug or rod I8 so that the latter is supported thereon, as shown in Fig. l, until the exact angularity desired is obtained. Screws 46 are then tightened and the tool 42 is fed along the surface of the wheel 48 by means of the shaft 36 until the wheel has been dressed to the desired degree.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not Wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claim, but what I claim is:
A grinding wheel dressing tool comprising a flat base, plug thereon, a frame angularly adjustable relative to the base and resting on the plug at one end thereof, a plug secured to 'the frame at the other end thereof, the base being zcapable of supl `porting gage blocks supporting the frame-secured plug and determining the angle of the frame, said frame including a bottom plate, a pair of side walls thereon, a journal block connecting said side Walls at the end of the frame to which the second named plug is secured, a shaft in the block, said shaft extending above the bottom plate -between and parallel t0 the side walls, means to rotate the shaft, spaced channels in the side walls, a plate slidable in said channels, a block Xed to and depending from the plate, said shaft passing through the block and operatively engaged there-- with to travel the block and attached plate, a tool holder on the plate in the area of the plateattached block, said plate slidably guiding the tool and acting as a dust guard, said sliding plate, bottom plate, side walls, shaft and journal block all contributing to increase the rigidity of the frame.
