730,316. Measuring displacements. CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE. Jan. 15, 1953 [Jan. 15, 1952; Dec. 22, 1952], No. 1244/53. Class 40 (1). For measuring the thickness of sheets or small displacements a feeler is secured transversely at one end of a beam which is fixed at its other end and carries one or more strain gauges on its middle portion for measuring the feeler deflections. As shown, Fig. 1, displacement of a feeler 6 in the direction of the arrow 4 is measured by differentially actuated resistance wire strain gauges 10, 11 mounted on opposite sides of the elastic central portion 2 of a beam connecting the feeler head 5 to a rigid base 1. A surrounding tube 12 limits the beam deflections and also protects the gauges 10, 11 which may be connected in, e.g., a bridge circuit. In Fig. 3, a beam 14 carrying the feeler 6 and the strain gauges is substantially horizontal and is rotated, e.g. for measuring the out-of-centre of a hollow shaft 15. In this case the weight of the beam affects the accuracy of the two gauges, and is counteracted by mounting the gauges with their centres a predetermined distance, calculated mathematically as shown in the Specification, from one end of the beam.
