Abstract

1424196 Caliper bore gauge J FULBECK 17 April 1973 [2 May 1972] 20372/72 Heading G1M A base 1 slidably supports a carriage 2 which is abutted at one end by a spindle 5 of a micrometer and at the other end by a dial gauge plunger 13. The base 1 has screwed into it in one of a series of holes 8 a ball ended probe 11 and the carriage 2 has a similar probe 111 which may slide in a slot 19 in the base and is screwed into one of a series of holes 9. The probe 111 has a knurled head 112 so that it may be easily re-positioned with respect to the relatively fixed probe 11. A clamping screw 17 is provided so that 1 and 2 may be locked together, and the dial gauge 12 is mounted on a screw adjustable bracket 15 and slide 21 so that it may be zeroed with respect to the carriage 2. In gauging a plain bore or initially a tapered bore 31, a short probe 111 is selected and under the action of the spring 6 the carriage 2 is retracted until the probes 11 and 111 make contact with the bore. The base 1 is then angularly moved horizontally about the ball 10 as a fulcrum to establish the probes on a diameter of the bore and the dial gauge is then zeroed against the lug 14. The micrometer is then operated to abut the carriage button 22 and give a reading with the dial gauge reading held at zero. The probe 111 is then replaced by a longer probe so that a further reading can be taken of the bore diameter at a distance advanced into the bore, and from these readings the bore taper can be readily determined by simple calculation.
