In a fluid gauging apparatus there is provided a first chamber 8 and a second intermediate chamber 3 inter-connected by a fixed orifice 4, the gauging head 1 being connected to the chamber 3, and one wall 7 of chamber 3 being formed as a flexible membrane which lies in contact with the piston of a valve 6 controlling the fluid supply 5 through the orifice 4. In use, fluid is supplied to the gauging head 1 so as to stabilize the pressure in chamber 3 according to a particular workpiece size, variations in pressure altering the position of valve 6 to maintain the pressure constant in chamber 3. Resulting pressure changes in chamber 8 are indicated on a manometer 9 as a measure of the variations in workpiece dimensions. In a modification, the apparatus is fitted with a valve balancing piston having an elastic or spring-biased flexible membrane, and a further intermediate chamber is provided. In a third embodiment, the valve arrangement is such that the inlet valve tends to close when the pressure in the intermediate chamber decreases. In a further embodiment, two valve arrangements are connected to a gauging head, one of the arrangements acting as an amplifier.
