[Also in Group XXIX] A pneumatic gauge comprises two separate conduit systems connected to a common supply of air under pressure and each provided with one of two valves 5, 10 (see Group XXIX), which allow regulated escapes of air to atmosphere, and a gauge tube 6 responsive to differences in the two systems, the valve 10 being a measuring valve and the arrangement being such that the gauge provides an indication related to a dimension of a workpiece as the latter is gauged, the measuring valve comprising a body 18 with a bore communicating with an inlet 16 and provided with an air outlet opening 22, and a piston 24 axially slidable in the bore and connected to a sensing member 26 which engages a workpiece 12 being gauged, the piston assuming a position partly to obturate the outlet 22 and so regulate the escape of air in dependence upon the relevant dimension of the workpiece. The air is directed from a distributing chamber 3 to the upper end of the gauge tube 6 and to atmosphere via the throttle valve 5, and the valve 10. A branch from the line leading to the valve 10 leads to one side of a diaphragm 9 in a housing 8, the other side of the diaphragm being in communication with a column of liquid in the gauge 2. In operation, when the workpiece 12 is moved under the plunger 26 connected to the piston 24, the piston is raised thereby throttling the flow of air through the outlet 22 and thus causes an increase in the pressure which acts on the diaphragm 9 and lifts the column of liquid in the gauge tube 6; a zero-graduation 13 is provided on the gauge tube. In order to vary the operating characteristics of the valve 10, i.e. to vary the travel of the plunger 26 in relation to the lift of the column of liquid, a bore 21 in a nozzle 20 of the valve may be varied and/or the shape of the outlet opening 22.
