Abstract

1414642 Liquid level indicators; pressure sensors W F CONTROLS Ltd 26 Sept 1973 [13 July 1972] 32741/72 Headings G1H and G1L To sense fluid-pressure, a pressure transmitting device is provided having a mounting block 20, a nozzle 26 and a convoluted diaphragm 22 to which the fluid-pressure is applied, and a fluid such as air under pressure is supplied via inlet 34, passages 26f and passages 20e in the block to the sealed space between the block and the diaphragm to balance the fluid-pressure applied to the diaphragm, excess air leaking away through a central bleed orifice 26b and a bore 26c in the nozzle at a rate determined by the position of an obturating member 24 mounted in a recess in the diaphragm and having a major surface in the datum surface of the diaphragm, the pressure of the air upstream of the nozzle being sensed as a measure of the position of the diaphragm and thus of the fluid-pressure applied to it. An O-ring 28 between the block 20 and nozzle 26 ensures that air is only bled through the orifice 26b, and the nozzle may be threaded into the block to be adjustable relative thereto. The diaphragm 22 may be of stainless steel and the tip 26a of the nozzle may be partly spherical and polished. If the transmitting device is placed at the bottom of a vessel (40), as in Fig.2 (not shown) it can be used in conjunction with a pressure indicator (50) to measure the level of liquid in the vessel. If the vessel is a pressure vessel a second transmitting device can be positioned above the liquid level to determine static pressure, the two transmitting devices in this case being connected to a differential pressure indicator (52) to provide a measure of liquid level.
