Abstract
1322397 Rolling DAVY & UNITED ENG CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [21 April 1970] 18957/70 Heading B3M In a roll gap adjusting mechanism for a rolling mill comprising an hydraulic pistoncylinder adjustment device 5 positioned between a chock 3 supporting the lower roll 4 and the base of the mill housing 1, a linear transducer 9 indicating the position of the lower roll 4 is connected by way of a mounting member 14, to the cylinder 7 through a releasable hydraulically operated gripping device 22. Since this arrangement allows disconnection of the transducer from the adjustment device 5, e.g. when a new roll of different diameter is to be fitted, and then reconnection when the roll has been fitted, a linear transducer of small stroke and high accuracy can be used even though the stroke of the adjustment device may be large. The transducer comprises a body 10 which is connected to the mounting member 14 through a block 12 and sleeve 13, and a core 11 slidable axially within the body 10. The electrical connections 23 to the transducer extend through the mounting member 14. A telescopic shield fits around and extends between metal covers 25, 26. In use when supply of liquid under pressure to the gripping device is cut off to disconnect the mounting member 14 from the cylinder 7, liquid under pressure is supplied to cylinders 32, 33 of a biasing device 30 which serves to bring the body 10 of the transducer to a fixed position, known as its datum position, with respect to base plate 19 and hence core 11; the adjustment device 5 is then operated to bring the mill rolls together under light load and thereafter valve 40 is operated to once again supply liquid under pressure to the gripping device thereby preventing further relative movement between the cylinder 7 and the mounting member 14. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) the transducer is located within the adjustment device 5 instead of outside and a system of springs replaces the hydraulic pistoncylinder biasing device 30 to bring the transducer to its datum position.
