A device for lifting an element comprises a tiltable member freely supported on at least two hydraulic rams each exerting through the tiltable member a leverage on a lifting mechanism mounted on the member, wherein contact surfaces provided between the rams and the member are shaped so that any lead of one ram over the other ram, or rams, results in a tilting of the member and, owing to relative movement between each surface of the rams and the respective surface of the member, a consequential decrease in the leverage exerted by the leading ram and a consequential increase in the leverage exerted by the trailing ram, or rams, thereby compensating for the lead of said one ram. The illustrated device includes two rams 6, 7, supplied from a common source, mounted on a ring 5 and supporting the member 9 via planar surfaces between the upper ends of the rams and the member and is used for removing cylinder liners 2. As shown, the piston-rods 6a, 7a are screw-threadedly secured to the ring 5 although alternatively the cylinders 6b, 7b may be so secured to the ring. The member 9 includes an annulus 10 on which seats a ring 11 secured to pipe 13 of the lifting mechanism. The pipe at its lower end carries a screwthreaded collar 14. A screwthreaded rod 12 carries a tiltable sleeve engaging element 15. In use with the rams extended and the device placed on a cylinder block, the element is tilted to an inoperative position and the rod is screwed until only the upper end is retained in the collar 14. The rams are retracted and the element 15 is then pivoted to its illustrated position. Extension of the rams will cause the sleeve to be wholly or partially removed. If only partially removed the rams should be retracted, the rods 12 screwed up until the element contacts the sleeve, and the rams again extended. Any lead of one ram over the other will cause a decrease in the leverage of that ram and an increase in the leverage of the other ram.
