Abstract

In a mine roof-supporting bar assembly comprising a main support beam 1 on or within which an auxiliary parallel support bar 2 moves an hydraulic ram 4 to advance the support bar 2 relative to the beam 1, and a wedge member 9, 10 movable with the bar 2 but spaced from it by a spring 14 to transmit the advancing force from the ram 4 to the bar 2, when the bar 2 is brought to rest, the force still exerted by the ram 4 overcomes the force exerted by the spring 14 so that the wedge member 9, 10 is caused to engage a part of the bar 2 to pivot the latter to move its leading end upward. The ram 4 inter-connects the beam 1 and the bar 2 at 7, its piston 6 or cylinder 5 carrying the wedge member 9, 10. The bar 2, to which a sprag 17 may be attached, pivots about a pin 3, where shown, and slides on it.
