Abstract

1,158,587. Rolling. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 15 Dec., 1966 [16 Dec., 1965], No. 53430/65. Heading B3M. A rolling mill stand includes within its stress path a unit whose resilience can be varied to alter the stiffness of the stand. The unit is positioned between a screwdown 3 and a roll chock, and incorporates a cylinder 5, a piston 7, and a liquid-filled space 6 connected to a chamber 8. To obtain a desired volume of liquid in the system, a piston 10 in the chamber is adjusted, a relief valve 14, between the chamber and a supply reservoir 11, determining the pressure of the liquid. Also connected between the chamber and reservoir are a one way valve 12 and an on/off switch 13. In a modified unit, Fig. 3, the cylinder 5 and chamber 8 are formed integrally, a sealing ring being bonded to both the cylinder and the piston 7. Movement of a threaded piston within the chamber 8 varies the volume of liquid as before while the pressure is fixed by a relief valve during adjustment.
