[Also in Groups XIX and XXII] An hydraulic device for applying pressure to the rolls of a rolling mill comprises a piston 22 and an annular piston 23 which are bolted to a base-plate 20 and cooperate with annular members 14, 17a bolted to a base-plate 12 thus forming a pressurechamber 28 and an annular pressure chamber 30. The device is located between a roll chock and corresponding screw of a rolling mill, chamber 30 is connected to an hydraulic accumulator and chamber 28 is in communication with a source of high-pressure oil through a regulating valve controlled as described in Specification 692,267. The chambers are sealed by a resilient seal 25 bonded to the piston 22 and to the inner wall of member 14, and a seal 27 bonded to piston 23 and member 17a. A member 17b is bolted to member 17a and is formed with a lip co-operating with a projection on the base-plate 20 to limit the maximum separation of the base-plates. The device may also be used in the testing of a structure under the combination of steady and periodic loading, a steady pressure being applied to one chamber and a periodically-varying pressure to the other. The device can be used to indicate variations in loading if one chamber is maintained at constant pressure and the other chamber is connected to a pressure indicator.
