Abstract

948,165. Rolling mills. DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Dec. 2, 1960 [Dec. 3, 1959], No. 41104/59. Heading B3M. In a cluster rolling mill the back-up rolls 17, Fig. 2, engaging intermediate rolls 16 are supported by hydrostatic bearings 18 extending over a substantial part of the roll length. The bearings 18 have a plurality of recesses 30 to which high-pressure liquid such as a waterbased soluble oil is pumped to maintain a small clearance and to provide cooling. Separate pumps may supply the oil to each bearing 18 so that the pressures may be varied to obtain shape correction for the rolls. The bearings 18 are mounted in part-cylindrical carriers 14 which are rotatably adjustable by screw-downs 20, 20<SP>1</SP> in the mill housing 12 for pass-adjustment. The work rolls 15 are eccentrically mounted to one side of the common centre 25 of the carrier 14 so that tilting of the carriers 14 results in relative movement of the rolls 15. Separating springs 24 provided between the carriers 14 may be replaced by an equivalent hydraulic system. The strip may be drawn through the mill by applying tension on the outgoing side or by driving the intermediate rolls 16 or by a combination of both methods. In a modification for larger mills the hydrostatic bearings may be arranged on cross-beams or on separate parts bolted to the cross-beams.
