Abstract

1,271,140. Rolling. HITACHI Ltd., and YAWATA IRON & STEEL CO. Ltd. 21 Aug., 1969 [8 Feb., 1969], No. 41719/69. Heading B3M. A method of operating a rolling mill comprises predicting roll settings for a number 1-j of initial passes based on ingot size and material, due allowance being made for mill constraints, measuring, during one of these passes k(1#k#j), the resistance to deformation of the material being rolled from the actual rolling load or rolling torque, calculating the optimum number of passes required to obtain a final size and calculating the rolling torque required to give the shortest total rolling time. An apparatus comprises vertical and horizontal rolls 3 and 4 with an entry table 1 and delivery table 2, the roll torques being measured by means 20, 21 the rolling loads by means 18, 19 and the roll separations by means 16 and 17 respectively for the vertical and horizontal loads. A schedule for initial roll passes 1-j, PS<SP>1</SP> i , is prepared by a unit 100 based on standard data for the ingot to be rolled and the various mill constraints and a second schedule for the j + 1th to the final pass, PS<SP>11</SP>j, is prepared by means 200 from actual data, obtained during the kth pass, for the ingot being rolled. Preferably there are three initial passes, data being collected by means 150 on the second pass and computed by means 200 during the third.
