Abstract

752,351. Rolling. SCHLOEMANN AKT.- GES. Jan. 21, 1954 [Jan. 21, 1953], No. 1812/54. Class 83 (4). In a multi-roll stand the two working rolls 16, Fig. 6, are frictionally driven by backing rolls 17 and are located in position by auxiliary supporting rolls 19 mounted at the side or by being offset out of the plane of the backing rolls or both. Rows of auxiliary rolls 19 are carried on beams 18 mounted on the vertically adjustable bearing chocks 26, Fig. 7, of the backing rolls 17. A wedge 36 and clamp 37 permit adjustment of the beam 18 relative to the other rolls. The working rolls 16 are held in permanent engagement with the other rolls by spring- loaded plungers 32 which engage bearings 28 at each end of the working rolls 16. Bearing plates 30 on hinged mountings 31 attached to the stands 27 hold the working rolls 16 in the axial direction. In a modification intermediate rolls 41, Fig. 10, are inserted between the working rolls 39 and the auxiliary rolls 42 which are in rolling contact with the backing rolls 38. The auxiliary rolls 42 are mounted on vertically slidable bearings 43 which are urged towards the backing rolls by spring plungers 45 through cranks 49 and connecting rods 50. The rolls 41 may be of softer material than the other rolls to prevent marking paths and to pick up splinters of material.
