1298729 Rolling mills T SENDZIMIR 29 May 1970 25909/70 Heading B3M A planetary rolling mill employs a pair of roll assemblies each including a number of work rolls 2, Fig. 3, positioned around a backing roll 1, the work rolls being supported at each end in a cage, 3, Fig. 11, surrounding a backing roll. The cage has pockets around its periphery for accommodating chocks 9, Fig. 3, of the work rolls, each pocket being defined by the parallel walls of adjacent bars 8. The bars are secured to a cage either by screws (Fig. 7, not shown), by a tensioning strip 10, Fig. 1, or by tensioning wires 10a, Fig. 4. Elastic liners 14 and 15, Fig. 3, may be positioned between each chock 9 and the adjacent bars 8. Instead of separate bars being provided for each cage, the bars may be extended so that they connect two cages, Fig. 11, and make a rigid assembly. The work roll chocks 9 may be used simply to position the rolls, and further bearings 17 may be provided at the roll ends. These bearings 17 are tensioned by wires 19 to hold the rolls against their associated backing roll. Alternatively, the ends of the work rolls may simply be provided with grooves around which tensioning wires pass (Figs. 9 and 10, not shown). To drive the two roll assemblies in synchronism, gears 12 are provided on the cages. The gears may be formed from separate segments, Fig. 4, held together by tensioning wires 24, and radially adjustable by shims 25. Each roll chock 9 is conveniently of square shape with a non-central bore (Fig. 12, not shown) so that the chock can be positioned in alternative positions in its pocket. The circumferential position of a roll relative to the cages can therefore be adjusted within small limits. The chocks 9 bearings, bearing surfaces of the chocks 9 may be formed of an oil-less plastics material or of glass fibre reinforced plastics material including McS 2 , since their loading is small.
