The work rolls 40 and 42 of a four-high mill are removable from the roll housings 10 as a unit, wheels 56 on the chocks 50 of the lower roll 42 supporting the two roll assemblies on vertically adjustable rails 57 during removal. The upper chocks 48 are situated within extensions 51 of the lower chocks, jacks 54 urging the upper roll 40 against its backing roll 18. For roll removal the backing roll 18 is raised by hydraulically actuated balance links 24 and the rails 57 are raised by jacks 60 in the lower backing roll chocks 34 until the rails cooperate with the wheels 56. The chocks 34 are themselves mounted using spacers 35 of appropriate thickness on a sled 37 which is slidable from the housings. The working roll assemblies are withdrawn from the mill on to the rails of a carriage 76, Fig. 4 (not shown), which are at the same height as the rails 57. The carriage 76 is mounted on a frame 66 which rolls on rails 70 by operating a cable 72, and is movable transversely to the rail 70 to align a replacement roll assembly with the mill. In an alternative form the rails 57 in the mill are raised by links which are attached to the balance links 24 so that raising of the backing roll 18 is automatically followed by raising of the rolls. The frame 66 and carriage 76 may be replaced by two sets of coextensive rails level with the mill rails 57 beneath which a small carriage moves to shift the roll assemblies. The roll set nearer the mill can be shifted parallel to the pass line on further rails to allow insertion of replacement roll assemblies (and is completely removable to allow the backing rolls to be replaced). A turntable may be employed in place of the movable roll set.
