The rolls 13 and 14 of a rolling mill are arranged to be removable from the mill housings 11 and 12, while rolled material is still passing through the mill. To remove the rolls, balance piston-cylinder assemblies 17 are operated to raise the upper roll 13, and a spacer 29 is placed between the right-hand chocks 15 and 16. A sled 24 which supports the chocks 16 is pulled partly from the housing by a cylinder 27 until wheels 34 on the left-hand chock 15 are above transverse beams 31 and 32 in the housings. Retraction of the left-hand assemblies 17 lowers the wheels on to the beams and permits both roll assemblies to be pulled clear of the housing. As the lower roll assembly is withdrawn from the housings, the right-hand chock 15 of the upper roller assembly is supported by the chock 16 of the lower assembly, while the left-hand chock 15 is supported on beams passing across the housings. A spacer 28 is placed between the left-hand chocks immediately before extensions 35 of the beams cease to support chock 15. In an alternative arrangement, the beams 31 and 32 extend between brackets on the two screws 18, the screws being operable to raise the beams into engagement with the rollers on the chock 15.
