Abstract

1333483 Rolling mills BLAW-KNOX FOUNDRY & MILL MACHINERY Inc 30 Nov 1971 [30 Nov 1970] 55614/71 Heading B3M A rolling mill is provided with an assembly for changing its work rolls, 11 and 12, Fig. 3, the assembly including rails 18 which extend between the windows of the mill (Fig. 1, in plan), and a roll-changing carriage 26 located beside the mill. To change the rolls 11 and 12, the rails 18 are raised to the position in Fig. 3 in which the lower roll chocks 16 are suspended by extensible rods 20 from the upper chocks 15. In this position, wheels 22 on the ends of the rods are aligned with rails 28 on the carriage 26. The rolls are then withdrawn from the mill by an hydraulically or motor-driven latch assembly 30. The carriage 26 is then shifted parallel to the rolling line until a replacement set of rolls 11<SP>1</SP>, 12<SP>1</SP> is aligned with the mill, the latch assembly inserting the new rolls into the mill. The guide rails 29 and 29<SP>1</SP> along which the latch assembly moves are provided at their ends adjacent the mill with curved or straight portions to help the assembly engage or disengage the rolls. The bed 24 on which the carriage 26 rests may be fixed or may be movable towards or away from the mill. Additionally, the bed may be raisable by screws or levers, if this is necessary, to align the rails 28 with the mill. The rams 19a for raising the rails 18 may serve for balancing the upper work roll 11.
