Abstract

1490020 Roll changing apparatus WEAN UNITED Inc 17 Feb 1975 [27 March 1974] 6528/75 Heading B3M Apparatus for changing the rolls of a rolling mill or calender includes a carriage 10 on which is mounted a support 20 for engaging the ends 24 of a pair of rolls and holding them cantilever fashion in an extended horizontal position, the support being connected by parallel links 40a and 50 to the carriage and being coupled to a counterweight 40. The counterweight is slightly heavier than a pair of rolls 26 and therefore tends to raise the support 20 and rolls. To lift the counterweight (and hence lower the rolls) a single-acting ram 56, Fig. 4, is operated. A motor-driven jack 58 limits movement of the counterweight and controls its lowering movement. To change the rolls of a mill, the carriage 10 is moved on rails 12 towards the operative side of the mill, and the rolls are withdrawn. The rolls are then deposited on a laterally movable carriage 30 which supports a replacement set of rolls. By aligning the replacement set with the carriage 10 and laterally withdrawing the carriage 30, the new rolls can be inserted in the mill. The support 20 may be provided with only one recess 22, if desired, and the roll sets may have a nested chock construction or may employ chock spacing stools.
