Abstract

Apparatus for use in changing the rolls of a mill having at least two rolls comprises a rollcarrying car 24 mounted on rails 33 and having two vertically spaced roll platforms and an assembly 36 for moving the rolls on to and off the platforms, the assembly being movable through an open side of the car 24 to approach the mill. To remove the rolls 12 and 13 from a mill 9 a frame 37 is shifted by a cylinder 49 into one roll platform of the car 24, both the car and the frame being recessed to avoid contact with a projecting wing 14 of the mill, the wing having a vertical roll. Hooks 38 and 40 on the frame engage hooks 39 and 41 on the roll chocks and the roll assemblies are withdrawn to the left. The upper roll assembly slides along a supporting beam 19 on to an upper platform of the car, while the lower roll assembly slides on to a lower platform. The car is then shifted by a cylinder 34 along rails 33, parallel to the pass line, until replacement roll assemblies 12a and 13a, housed in a second bay of the car, are in line with the mill. These assemblies are moved by the frame 37 into the mill. If required, a single roll can be removed from a mill using a ar having only one platform.
