An edge-rolling mill stand comprises opposite edge rolls 37 which are moved axially for exchange and each journalled in a chock 34 slidably mounted in housings 22, 22a which are movable relative to the mill centre line and a carrier 74 located between the housings and engagable with the upper ends of the chocks. The stands are used in conjunction with horizontal mills 10, 12, 13 and each mill stand is used with another stand so that four edgerolling rolls are provided between each pair of horizontal mills. The slab S is guided by water cooled guides 18, 19. Hydraulic rams 26 urge the housings together to adjust the pass. Each roll is provided with an hydraulic lifting cylinder 32 whose plunger adjusts the roll axially so that one of the passes 37a, 37b of each roll can be displaced axially when worn. When the rolls are in their upper position a step block 40 is moved under the chock 34 to support it. Lock pins 43 are moved into sockets 42, 42a to lock the chocks in position. The inner wall of each housing has locking plates (50), Fig. 6 (not shown), which are moved by a cylinder (54) into guideways (47), Fig. 5 (not shown), in the chock. The upper end of each roll has a non- circular extension 57 engaged with a vertical movable coupling sleeve 58. The upper end of the sleeve 58 is splined and engages a drive shaft 60 of a drive motor 62. The housings of the adjacent horizontal mills 10, 12, Fig. 7, have cheek plates 72 with tapered sockets 73 to receive lugs 75 of the carrier 74. The lower edge of the carrier is water cooled and acts as an upper guide for the slab S. The carrier 74 can be locked relative to the mills 10, 12 by linkages 77. Each longitudinal side of the carrier has a pair of recesses 85 whose arcs extend through more than 180 degrees. Each recess has a lip 86, Fig. 4, which is engagable with a lip 88 of a ring 87 carried by each of the chocks. The carrier is lifted by a crane 20 with a hook 92 which engages a pin 91 to cause linkage 93, 97 to move locking bars 96 into abutment with the ring 87 when the carrier is lifted. To remove the four rolls of the stands 14, 15 the coupling sleeve 66 is raised, the housings are moved inwards so that the lips overlap and the carrier is lifted to engage the lips and remove the roll assembly from the housing.
