Abstract

1,218,186. Rolling. UNITED ENG. & FOUNDRY CO. 5 June, 1968 [5 June, 1967], No. 25866/67. Heading B3M. [Also in Divisions B5 and D2] A rolling mill, or a calender for processing paper, plastics or rubber, includes a pair of rolls 13, 14 which can be removed laterally from their housing, whilst a workpiece 5 is passing between the rolls but not being processed by them. To remove the rolls, the screwdowns 32 are released, a spacer 41 is placed between the chocks 15 and 17, and a latch 51 is shifted beneath a hook on the chock 16. The latch is carried on a C-shaped frame 43 connected by a pin 47 to a sled 36 supporting the roll assemblies. A piston-cylinder assembly 38 shifts the roll assemblies to the dotted position and simultaneously draws the frame 43 into the housing, but clear of the strip 5. A similar arrangement is described (Fig. 3, not shown) in which only the lower roll is provided with a driving spindle and in which the frame 43 is vertically adjustable.
