Abstract

1,255,207. Rolling. UNITED ENG. & FOUNDRY CO. 13 May, 1969 [27 May, 1968], No. 24348/69. Heading B3M. A universal rolling mill has a pair of vertical roll assemblies comprising chocks 25, 26 and rolls 17, 18 supported by housings 10, 11 and movable into the centre of the mill between the housings so that an assembly can be removed from the mill in the direction of material passage through the mill. The chocks are slidable on guides 29 in recessed yokes 21, 22 on the housings. The guides extend between the housings as supports 35 along which the assemblies are moved by screws 32. The chocks are held in contact with the screws by pullback cylinders 33 hooked to the chocks. When the chock is in the centre of the mill it is raised by lifting rods 36 so that the end 47 of a porter bar 41 can be moved under the chock. Alternatively the porter bar can have tilting tables to raise and lower the chock. Only one chock can be removed at a time through an opening 39. Alternatively the porter bar can be a slab fed into one side of the mill and fed out of the other side.
