Abstract

In a continuous rolling process at least one roll stand is movable along the rolling line in response to tension or compression in the rolled material, this movement being used to control the roll speed of the stand such that the tension or compression is removed and the stand returns to its original position. Conveniently, all the stands in a train are similarly controlled. In a train of stands n 1 -n 3 , signals from stand movement detecting devices are used automatically or manually to control roll speed centralling mechanisms B which vary the speed of the roll motors M. Extensions (8), Fig. 2 (not shown) of a roll stand housing (1) are supported by rollers (5) of stationary supports (7) to permit movement of the stand along the rolling line, blocks (6) preventing lateral movement of the stand. The stand is locked by a detent (10) to a support (7) until a photo-electric detector (14) senses that a workpiece has entered between the rolls (2) and (4). Apparatus (11) then releases the detent. When the workpiece is sensed as having left the rolls a reset device (13) repositions the stand in its original position and the detent (10) is locked in position.
