Abstract

1408573 Rolling mills WEAN UNITED Inc 21 Dec 1972 [21 Jan 1972] 2934/72 Heading B3M [Also in Division G3] Tension in a strip passing between two stations, e.g. adjacent stands 11, 12 in a cold strip rolling mill, is controlled by operation of a tensioning device in responce to a tension measuring device, the two devices being arranged at two separate points between the stands. The object is to achieve a more rapid response than is given by the conventional method of adjusting the speed of (high inertia) rolls. Measurement is by a strain gauge 34 sensitive to the movement of a pivoted arm 30 carrying a roller 29. The signal from this is compared with a reference 45 in amplifier 44 and any error adjusts the hydraulic loading applied to a second pivoted arm 24 having a roller 25. Further rollers 37, 40 above the strip deflect it to ensure contact with the measuring and tensioning rollers 29, 25. To maintain the tensioning arm within a desired range it is connected to a non-linear potentiometer 51 whose output controls the speed of the rolls 16 in the leading stand 11. Over the normal range this has virtually no effect, but excessive movement of arm 24 causes progressively greater alteration to the speed.
