Abstract

In a tandem or a reversing rolling mill, at least one rolling stand is controlled by a roll force gauge control system in which the roll force and the unloaded roll spacing are measured and a calculated delivery gauge is calculated therefrom and compared with the actual delivery gauge to derive a control signal to adjust the screwdown position of the rolls, if necessary. As shown in Fig. 1, a tandem rolling mill has n stands, each of which has a load cell LC for measuring the roll force and a screwdown position detector SPD. An X-ray gauge 20 measures the actual workpiece gauge at the exit of the last stand and the "mass flow" delivery gauge for each other stand is calculated using the speed of the workpiece at the stand as measured by a tachogenerator T, modified if necessary by a slip factor. Each stand is interrogated in turn in an automatic sequence under the control of a computer 18 and the "roll force" gauge is calculated making allowance, if necessary, for non-linearity of the mill spring. If the calculated "roll force" gauge is within a certain "validity" range (e.g. within 10% of the actual "mass flow" gauge), the screwdown position is adjusted, the amount of adjustment being determined by a weighted mean of the new screwdown offset (10%) and the previous one (90%). If the calculated gauge is outside the "validity" range, no adjustment is made and interrogation passes to the next stand.
