Definitions
- the invention relates to novel gasoline fuels and the use of hydroxycarboxylic acid esters as octane number improvers.
- oxygen-containing fuel extenders some of which also have an octane-improving effect.
- These substances also include esters of lower carboxylic acids, such as formic acid or acetic acid.
- the object of the invention is to provide Otto fuels with readily soluble, oxygen-containing components.
- the properties, in particular the octane number, of the fuels are to be improved.
- the hydroxycarboxylic acids mentioned are mono-hydroxycarboxylic acids which have no further functional groups.
- the hydroxy group can be carried by any carbon atom except that of the carboxyl group.
- the inner esters which are also called lactones
- ⁇ -lactones are difficult to produce and not very stable. They are therefore less suitable.
- Esters of hydroxycarboxylic acids in which the hydroxy group is in the ⁇ position to the carboxyl group are particularly preferred. In the case of the lactones, preference is given to those with a five-membered ring. A particularly high effect, the octane number increasing, was found in such esters.
- the hydroxycarboxylic acids preferably have 4 to 6 carbon atoms.
- ⁇ -valerolactone can be produced relatively easily by selective hydrogenation of ⁇ -angelicalactone or pseudo-levulinic acid, the tautomer of levulinic acid.
- the latter can be produced relatively easily from materials containing mono- and / or polysaccharides.
- esters of hydroxycarboxylic acids also have a good effect which increases the octane number. They are preferred because the underlying lactic acid can be made available relatively easily in larger quantities by fermentation of glucose or milk products.
- the alcohols on which the alcohol radical of the hydroxycarboxylic acid esters are based preferably have 1 to 10, in particular 1 to 4, carbon atoms. Although there are in principle no other restrictions on the alcohols, aliphatic alcohols are preferred. These can be cyclic, straight-chain or branched-chain. Straight-chain alcohols are preferred.
- the alcohol residue can in principle also carry other substituents which are not reactive in the fuel mixture. For example, aromatic substituents make their own contribution to increasing the octane number when used in petrol.
- a preferred type of alcohols are ether alcohols which have at least one oxygen (ether) bridge.
- ether alcohols which have at least one oxygen (ether) bridge.
- oligoalkoxy ether alcohols so those with recurring alkoxy ether units are preferred, in particular if their number is 2 to 5 and they have 2 to 5 carbon atoms. Oligoethoxy ether alcohols are particularly suitable.
- polyhydric alcohols In the case of polyhydric alcohols, several OH groups can react with hydroxycarboxylic acids to give the corresponding esters.
- Suitable polyhydric alcohols are e.g. B. glycol or glycerin.
- the alcohols used for the esterification are preferably monohydric, so that no further free OH groups are present after the esterification has taken place.
- Alcohols with a terminal OH group ie primary alcohols, are particularly suitable. But secondary and tertiary alcohols also give good results.
- esters can be used in fuels over a wide range of mixtures. So you can z. B. make up to 90 VA% of such fuels. They are miscible or soluble in almost any ratio with conventional petrol.
- esters in which the underlying hydroxycarboxylic acid is of native origin or simply from so-called renewable raw materials, e.g. B. Saccharide containing materials can be produced.

- Oxygenates e.g.
- the fuels described above can form the basis for the fuels according to the invention to which the esters are added. At least in part, the esters can replace the oxygenates normally otherwise contained.
- the esters are preferably present in the fuel at 1 to 90%. A preferred content is between 1 and 50%, in particular between 1 and 20 VA%. All of the above percentages relate to volume fractions (VA).
- Mixtures of inner and outer esters can advantageously also be used.
- the mixing ratio can be any.
- alcohols preferably methanol, may also be present. This applies in particular if these alcohols are identical to those on which the alcohol components of the outer esters are based. After esterification has taken place, there is advantageously no need to separate lactones, esters and alcohols, but these components can be used as a mixture with good results.
- the invention relates to the use of the described inner and outer esters of hydroxycarboxylic acids as octane number improvers in Otto fuels.
- the ratio and% figures relate to volume fractions (VA).
- the fuels SK 1 and SK 2 (so-called Eurosuper) each meet DIN 51 607 and are standard, unleaded petrol.
- the values of the research octane number (RON) and the motor octane number (MOZ) were determined in accordance with DIN 51 756 T1 - T4 and T6.
- esters have an octane-improving effect which is comparable in part to known octane-number improvers, or these z. T. surpasses.
- ⁇ -angelicalactone shows a significant decrease in octane numbers.
- test results clearly show that an increase in the glare values for RON and MOZ is associated with increasing levels of valerolactone and methyl lactate and that mixtures with up to 90 VA% ester content are possible.
- SK 3 is a commercially available, unleaded super fuel according to DIN and, with an aromatic component of 49 VA%, corresponds approximately to the market average of 50 VA%.
- SK 4 is an extremely low-aromatic, unleaded super fuel according to DIN with an aromatic content of 23 V.A .-%. The aromatics content was determined by means of fluorescence indicator analysis according to ASTM.
Abstract
Description
B. aus K. Owen, Handbook of Automotive Fuels, publ. 1990 by Soc. Autom. Eng.
Komponente Normal (NK) Super (SK) Super Plus (SKP) C9+-Aromaten 5 - 25 % 10 - 35 % 15 - 30 % Aromaten aus Raffinat 10 - 25 % 0 - 25 % 10 - 55 % Toluol 0 - 20 % 0 - 20 % 0 - 20 % FCC-Benzin schwer 0 - 10 % 0 - 30 % HC-Benzin leicht 0 - 30 % 0 - 15 % Pyrolyse-Benzin leicht 0 - 15 % 0 - 15 % Pyrolyse-Benzin schwer 0 - 15 % 0 - 15 % Reformat 0 - 5 % 0 - 15 % 0 - 30 % Oxygenate (z.
