Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung
von als Schmieröle oder Schmierölkomponenten geeigneten Copolyäthern.
Es ist bekannt, daß bestimmte Alkylenglykole mit zwei Hydroxylgruppen an benachbarten Kohlenstoffatomen
polykondensiert werden können unter Bildung viskoser Flüssigkeiten oder wachsartiger Polymerer,
die in gewissem Maße als Schmiermittel geeignet sind. Alkylenoxyde, bei denen die Sauerstoffbrücke von
zwei benachbarten Kohlenstoffatomen getragen wird, bilden analoge Kondensationsprodukte. Diese bekannten
Produkte haben als gemeinsames Strukturkennzeichen, daß die Sauerstoffatome je durch nur
zwei Kohlenstoffatome getrennt sind.
Diese Produkte haben den Nachteil einer verhältnismäßig
großen Oxydationsfähigkeit. Stabilisierung durch Zugabe bestimmter Antioxydantia ist möglich,
aber dazu sind ziemlich große Mengen erforderlich, und dann ist die Beständigkeit oft noch nicht so hoch, wie
es erwünscht wäre. Außerdem können die Antioxydantia in solchen hohen Konzentrationen die Bildung
harzartiger Absetzungen auf Motorteilen herbeiführen.
Es hat sich gezeigt, daß diese Nachteile nicht auftreten bei Copolyäthern, deren Moleküle, abgesehen
von den Endgruppen, im wesentlichen aus Ketten bestehen, aufgebaut aus Gliedern der allgemeinen
Formel:

oder organische Reste darstellen.
Dabei sind die für Schmiermittel wichtigen Eigenschäften,
wie Viskosität und niedriger Erstarrungs-

punkt, mindestens ebenso günstig wie bei den bekannten
Produkten.
Die neuen Copolyäther werden nach der Erfindung
erhalten durch Copolykondensation von Alkylenglykolen der allgemeinen Formel

Die Zahl s kann im allgemeinen von ι bis io variieren,
soll aber vorzugsweise den Wert 4 nicht überschreiten. Auch die Zahl t kann im allgemeinen von
ι bis 10 variieren. Sie soll vorzugsweise den Wert 5
nicht überschreiten.
Es empfiehlt sich, das Verhältnis zwischen den Alkylenglykolen und den Trimethylenglykolen, ausgedrückt
in den Anzahlen der monomeren Moleküle, zwischen den Grenzen 10:1 und 1:10 zu wählen.
In allen diesen Fällen werden Produkte erhalten, deren Eigenschaften deutlich verschieden sind von
denen der Polymerisationsprodukte der Alkylenglykole an sich oder der Trimethylenglykole an sich.
Die Substituenten A können unter sich verschieden sein. Alkylgruppen, Arylgruppen, Aralkylgruppen
und cyclo-aliphatische Gruppen kommen besonders in Betracht, obwohl es in besonderen Fällen vorteilhaft
sein kann, die Eigenschaften der Produkte zu modifizieren durch Einführung aktiver Gruppen, wie Hydroxylgruppen,
Carboxylgruppen, Carbonylgruppen, Halogenatome, Schwefelatome.
Vorzugsweise werden niedere Alkylgruppen gewählt, deren Anzahl im Alkylenglykol vorzugsweise nicht
größer ist als 1 und im Trimethylenglykol nicht größer als 2, während die übrigen A Wasserstoffatome
sind.
Die Copolykondensation kann in allen üblichen Weisen mit Hilfe der für Reaktionen dieser Art bekannten
Katalysatoren ausgeführt werden. Eine gute Reinigung der erhaltenen Produkte, wobei Katalysatoren,
etwaige Lösungsmittel, Wasser und flüchtige Bestandteile, wie unumgesetzte Monomere, entfernt
werden, ist im allgemeinen notwendig. Für einige Zwecke ist auch die Entfernung von Farbstoffen erwünscht.
Dazu kann das Produkt manchmal hydriert werden. Oft genügt eine Behandlung mit aktivem
Ton, ζ. B. Walkerde, wobei vorzugsweise Kohlenwasserstoffe, besonders Benzol und Toluol, als Lösungsmittel
angewandt werden.
Durch die Hydrierung, welche mit bekannten Katalysatoren, vorzugsweise mit Raney-Nickel ausgeführt
wird, werden farbtragende Gruppen, wahrscheinlich großenteils Carbonylgruppen, reduziert. Eine Nachbehandlung
mit aktivem Ton ist in vielen Fällen zu empfehlen.
Die endständigen Hydroxylgruppen der Copolymerisationsprodukte können mittels an sich bekannter
Verfahren teilweise oder völlig ätherifiziert, esterifiziert oder in anderer Weise modifiziert werden. Dadurch
kann man z. B. die Löslichkeit ändern oder andere für Schmiermittel oder Plastifizierungsmittel erwünschte
Eigenschaften verbessern. Vorzugsweise wird die Umsetzung der Endgruppen ausgeführt direkt
nach der Copolymerisation und vor der Säuberung und Entfärbung.
Die Konsistenz der nach der Erfindung hergestellten Produkte kann variieren von dünnflüssig bis viskos
ölig oder sogar fest, wobei das Molekulargewicht von etwa 100 bis 10 000 variiert. Im besonderen solche
Produkte, deren Molekulargewichte zwischen 200 und 1500 hegen, sind mit gutem Erfolg als Schmiermittel,
Schmiermittelkomponente und auch als Plastifizierungsmittel anwendbar. Ihre Viskositäten hegen zwischen
30 und 300 Centistokes bei 370 und zwischen 4,5 und. 40 Centistokes bei 100°. Diese Viskositäten
stimmen überein mit denen von Schmierölen mit SAE.-Zahlen von 10 bis 80. Der Viskositätsindex
variiert von 100 bis 165 oder sogar darüber. Dieser Index ist z. B. 113 für einen Copolyäther, dessen Molekulargewicht
etwa 300 beträgt, während ein Index 136 einem Molekulargewicht 1000 entspricht. Durch Acetylierung
der Endgruppen konnte bei einem bestimmten Copolykondensationsprodukt der Viskositätsindex
von 124 auf 165 erhöht werden.
Bei einem Copolykondensationsprodukt mit Molekulargewicht 460 von Trimethylenglykol und Diäthylenglykol
im Verhältnis 60 : 40 war die Viskosität 70,0 Centistokes bei 370 und 10,6 Centistokes bei 99°. Der
Viskositätsindex war 133. Nach 4ostündigem Versuch in einem Lausonmotor war die Viskosität 81,5
Centistokes bei 370 und 11,9 Centistokes bei 99°. Der
Viskositätsindex hatte den Wert 133 beibehalten. Der Motor zeigte nur eine geringe Harzabsetzung am Boden
und im Ölsammelgefäß, während die Kolbenlauffläche rein war.
Der Erstarrungspunkt der neuen Copolyäther ist niedrig und ihre Oxydationsbeständigkeit ausgezeichnetj
besonders bei Anwesenheit kleiner Mengen von substituierten Phenolen oder substituierten Aminen.
In der nachstehenden Tabelle werden die Zeitspannen angegeben, in welchen ein Muster von 50 cm3 bei
140° und bei Anwesenheit von 1 cm2 Kupferoberfläche
pro Gramm in einem kleinen Versuchsraum den ursprünglichen Sauerstoffdruck von 7 at um 10 bzw.
20 °/0 herabsetzt. Als Stabilisator wurde Phenyl-anaphthylamin
gewählt.

Die hervorragenden Eigenschaften des nach der Erfindung hergestellten Copolyäthers in bezug auf das
bekannte Propylenoxydpolymere kommen hier gut zum Ausdruck.
Außer Antioxydantia können evtl. Antikorrosionsmittel, Gelierungsmittel für die Bildung von Schmierfetten,
Stoffe zur Verbesserung des Hochdruckschmiervermögens zugesetzt werden.
In den folgenden Beispielen wird die Herstellung ίο einer Anzahl der neuen Copolyäther beschrieben. Auch
werden Angaben gemacht mit Bezug auf die für Schmierungsmittel wichtigen Eigenschaften.
Copolykondensation von Trimethylenglykol
und Diäthylenglykol
und Diäthylenglykol
Es wurden 80 Gewichtsteile Trimethylenglykol und 20 Gewichtsteile Diäthylenglykol zusammen mit 2 Gewichtsteilen
Jodwasserstoff in einer 5o°/0igen wäßrigen
Lösung in ein Reaktionsgefäß eingeführt, das unmittelbar mit einem Destilliergefäß verbunden war, durch
welches das Wasser praktisch ohne Rückfluß abgeleitet wurde.
Das Reaktionsgefäß wurde mehrere Stunden lang auf 175 bis 200° erhitzt. Nach Ablauf der Reaktion
wurde die Erhitzung unterbrochen und das Reaktionsgemisch gekühlt und in Benzol gelöst. Die erhaltene
Lösung wurde mit Natronlauge von 480 Baume und
Wasser gewaschen, worauf das Lösungsmittel durch Verdampfung entfernt wurde. Das braune, ölige Produkt,
das ein Copolykondensat von Trimethylenglykol und Diäthylenglykol war, hatte folgende Eigenschaften:
Molgewicht 700; Viskosität 99,1 Centistokes bei 370 und 15,0 Centistokes bei 990; Viskositätsindex 138,
Gefrierpunkt —-15°.
Copolykondensation von Trimethylenglykol
und Diäthylenglykol
Es wurden 60 Gewichtsteile Trimethylenglykol, 40 Gewichtsteile Diäthylenglykol und 4 Gewichtsteile
p-Toluolsulfonsäure in der in Beispiel I beschriebenen
Weise erhitzt, unter Anwendung von Dekahydronaphthalin als Verdünnungsmittel zur Bildung eines Azeotrops
mit dem anfallenden Wasser. Das ursprüngliche Verhältnis von Dekahydronaphthalin zu den Glykolen
war etwa 1:1. Die Reinigung des Polykondensats wurde in der in Beispiel I beschriebenen Weise ausgeführt.
Das braune Copolykondensat hatte ein Molekulargewicht von 595, eine Viskosität von 58,2 Centistokes
bei 370 und von 20 Centistokes bei 990, einen
Gefrierpunkt unter —750 und einen Viskositätsindex
130.
Copolykondensation von Trimethylenglykol
und Triäthylenglykol
In der in Beispiel I beschriebenen Weise wurden 60 Gewichtsteile Trimethylenglykol mit 40 Gewichtsteilen Triäthylenglykol polykondensiert. Das PoIykondensationsprodukt
hatte ein Molekulargewicht von 570, eine Viskosität von 87,2 Centistokes bei 370
und von 13,0 Centistokes bei 99° und einen Viskösitätsindex
von 135.
Acetylierung des Copolykondensats von Trimethylenglykol und Diäthylenglykol
Trimethylenglykol und Diäthylenglykol wurden in der in Beispiel II beschriebenen Weise polykondensiert.
Die Reäktionsmasse wurde in 200 Gewichtsteilen Benzol gelöst. Es wurden 100 Gewichtsteile
Essigsäureanhydrid zugesetzt, und das Gemisch wurde 8 Stunden lang an einem Rückflußkühler erhitzt. Die
Lösung wurde mit der vierfachen Menge Wasser extrahiert, und das acetylierte Polymere wurde aufgearbeitet
durch Entfernung des Benzols und Trocknung bei ioo° unter einem Druck von 1 bis 2 mm Hg. Das
Produkt hatte ein Molekulargewicht von 650, einen Viskositätsindex von 165 und einen Gefrierpunkt
unter —75°.
Herstellung des 2-Äthylcapronats eines Copolykonden- g^
sats von Trimethylenglykol und Diäthylenglykol
Es wurde ein Reaktionsgemisch, wie in Beispiel II beschrieben, erhitzt. Nach der Polykondensation wurde das Gemisch mit 200 Gewichtsteilen Benzol vermischt, worauf 65 Gewichtsteile 2-Äthylcapron- go säure zugesetzt wurden und das Gemisch unter Rückfluß einer Destillation unterzogen wurde, bis keine Destillation von Wasser mehr eintrat. Der Rückstand wurde mit der vierfachen Menge Wasser gewaschen; das Polykondensat wurde aufgearbeitet durch Verdunstung des Lösungsmittels, worauf es unter einem Druck von 1 bis 2 mm Hg bei ioo° getrocknet wurde. Das Produkt hatte ein Molekulargewicht von 800, einen Viskositätsindex von 150 und einen Gefrierpunkt unter —-75°.
Es wurde ein Reaktionsgemisch, wie in Beispiel II beschrieben, erhitzt. Nach der Polykondensation wurde das Gemisch mit 200 Gewichtsteilen Benzol vermischt, worauf 65 Gewichtsteile 2-Äthylcapron- go säure zugesetzt wurden und das Gemisch unter Rückfluß einer Destillation unterzogen wurde, bis keine Destillation von Wasser mehr eintrat. Der Rückstand wurde mit der vierfachen Menge Wasser gewaschen; das Polykondensat wurde aufgearbeitet durch Verdunstung des Lösungsmittels, worauf es unter einem Druck von 1 bis 2 mm Hg bei ioo° getrocknet wurde. Das Produkt hatte ein Molekulargewicht von 800, einen Viskositätsindex von 150 und einen Gefrierpunkt unter —-75°.
Entfärbung des Copolykondensats von Trimethylenglykol und Diäthylenglykol
Trimethylenglykol und Diäthylenglykol wurden polykondensiert und das Polymere in der in Beispiel I
beschriebenen Weise gereinigt. Es wurde 1 Teil des braunen Polymeren in 2 Gewichtsteilen Benzol gelöst,
worauf durch eine mit Walkerde gefüllte Kolonne perkoliert wurde. Durch diese Behandlung verbesserte
sich die Farbe des Polykondensats von Braun zu Gardner-Farbe 13.
Hydrierung der Copolykondensate von Trimethylen- xlg
glykol und Diäthylenglykol
Das teilweise entfärbte Polykondensat, das in der in Beispiel VI beschriebenen Weise durch Filtrierung mit
Walkerde erhalten wurde, wurde unter einem Wasserstoffdruck von 105 at und bei einer Temperatur von
1250 in Gegenwart von Raney-Nickel hydriert. Das
erhaltene Produkt hatte eine Gardner-Farbe von 6.
Claims (6)
- Patentansprüche:i. Verfahren zur Herstellung von Schmiermitteln oder Schmiermittelkomponenten, dadurch gekenn-zeichnet, daß man ein Alkylenglykol der allgemeinen Formelmit einem Trimethylenglykol der allgemeinen FormelA A A \
0 —C — C—C— —OHA A A tmischpolykondensiert, wobei s und t in den Formeln ganze Zahlen von ι bis io bedeuten, während die A Wasserstoffatome oder organische Reste darstellen. - 2. Verfahren nach Anspruch i, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Zahl s den Wert 4 und die Zahl t den Wert 5 nicht überschreiten.
- 3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1'oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das Verhältnis zwischen dem Alkylenglykol und dem Trimethylenglykol, ausgedrückt in der Anzahl der monomeren Moleküle, zwischen den Grenzen 10: 1 und 1: 10 liegt.
- 4. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 bis 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß von den A im Alkylenglykol nicht mehr als 1 und im Trimethylenglykol nicht mehr als 2 niedere Alkylgruppen und die übrigen A Wasserstoffatome darstellen.
- 5. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 bis 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die endständigen Hydroxylgruppen des Mischpolykondensationsproduktes teilweise oder völlig abgewandelt, insbesondere ätherifiziert, esterifiziert werden.
- 6. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 bis 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß dem Mischpolykondensationsprodukt ein Antioxydationsmittel und bzw. oder ein Antikorrosionsmittel und bzw. oder ein Mittel zur Verbesserung des Hochdruckschmiervermögens und bzw. oder ein Gelierungsmittel zugesetzt wird.© 5530 11.53
