ist in Anspruch genommen Die Schutzdauer des Patents ist nach Gesetz Nr. 8 der Alliierten Hohen Kommission verlängert
Im Patent 703 239 ist gezeigt worden, daß man Schmieröle in hervorragender Weise verbessern kann,
wenn man ihnen solche Diaryithioäther zusetzt, die in
jedem aromatischen Kern mindestens eine Hydroxylgruppe oder die neben mindestens einer am aromatischen
Kern gebundenen Hydroxylgruppe mindestens eine Alkylgruppe enthalten. Vorzugsweise verwendet
man dabei Diaryithioäther, die in jedem aromatischen Kern mindestens eine Hydroxylgruppe und daneben im
Molekül eine oder mehrere Alkylgruppen enthalten.
Es wurde nun gefunden, daß man ganz ähnliche Ergebnisse erhält, wenn man an Stelle der genannten
Thioäther Alkylphenolpolysulfide verwendet. Diese Verbindungen entsprechen der allgemeinen Formel

ist es zweckmäßig, daß R und R' gleich sind. Diese Alkylgruppen sollen vorzugsweise 2 bis 8 Kohlenstoffatome
enthalten. Die Gruppen OH und R können an den aromatischen Rest in beliebiger Stellung gebunden
sein; vorteilhaft sind solche Verbindungen, bei denen die Alkylgruppen R und R' in o- oder p-Stellung zur
Hydroxylgruppe stehen. Derivate der genannten Verbindungen, in denen z.B. die Alkylgruppe ihrerseits
wieder durch einen aromatischen Kern substituiert ist, ίο worin also R eine Aralkylgruppe, wie dieBenzylgruppe,
bedeutet, kommen ebenfalls in Frage. Die Arylgruppen in den neuen Verbindungen oder auch die an diese gebundenen
Alkylgruppen können auch durch andere Gruppen substituiert sein, beispielsweise durch Äther-,
Aldehyd-, Keton-, Säure- oder Estergruppen oder auch durch stickstoffhaltige Gruppen, wie die Amino- oder
Cyangruppe, oder auch durch Gruppen, die Schwefel, Selen oder Tellur enthalten.
Vorzugsweise verwendet man Verbindungen der genannten Art, in denen Ar und Ar' Phenylgruppen und
R und R' Alkylgruppen mit 4 bis 6 Kohlenstoffatomen darstellen. Dabei können diese Alkylgruppen der cyclischen
Reihe angehören, doch ist es vorzuziehen, solche der aliphatischen Reihe zu verwenden, wobei dann die
Alkylgruppen normale oder auch solche mit verzweigten Ketten sein können. An Stelle einer Oxygruppe in
den aromatischen Gruppen können auch mehrere Oxygruppen anwesend sein, wie es z. B. bei Derivaten des
Resorcins oder Hydrochinons der Fall ist. Verbindungen der genannten Art erhält man z.B.,
wenn man Alkylphenole mit Schwefelchlorid S2 Cl2 umsetzt.
Die Alkylphenole, die dabei als Ausgangsstoffe dienen, können z. B. durch Kondensation von Phenolen
mit Olefinen, zweckmäßig solchen von 2 bis 8 Kohlenstoffatomen,
oder mit Olefingemischen umgesetzt werden. Die Kondensation mit Schwefelchlorid führt man
vorzugsweise in Gegenwart von inerten Verdünnungsmitteln durch, z.B. Alkylhalogeniden, wie Äthylenchlorid.
Wenn die Umsetzung beendet ist, was man daran erkennen kann, daß kein Halogenwasserstoff mehr
entweicht, werden diese Verdünnungsmittel und nicht umgesetzte Phenole durch Destillation entfernt, so daß
die Polysulfide als Destillationsrückstand erhalten werden. Vorzugsweise verwendet man die Alkylphenole
und das Schwefelchlorid in einem Mengenverhältnis von etwa 0,4 und 0,6 Mol Schwefelchlorid je Mol Alkylphenol.
Verwendet man mehr Schwefelchlorid, so entstehen in Mineralölen unlösliche Harze; selbst unter
Anwendung des genannten Mengenverhältnisses werden geringe Mengen von Verbindungen gebildet, die
mehr als zwei aromatische Reste und entsprechend mehr Schwefel enthalten. Doch sind diese in Mineralöl
löslich und stören daher nicht, üben vielmehr unter Umständen eine günstige Wirkung aus.
An Stelle von Schwefelchlorid kann man auch dessen Gemische mit Schwef eldichlorid verwenden, wobei dessen
Menge aber nicht mehr als 75 und zweckmäßig nur zwischen 10 und 35 °/0 betragen soll. Man erhält in diesem Fall als Reaktionsprodukt ein Gemisch der PoIysulfide
mit den im Hauptpatent beschriebenen Thioäthern.
Es wurde weiter gefunden, daß man eine sehr gute Verbesserung von Schmierölen auch dann erzielt, wenn
man Verbindungen anwendet, die als Polymere von solchen Diarylmono- und -polysulfiden aufgefaßt werden
können, die mindestens eine Oxygruppe in einem aromatischen Kern enthalten. Verbindungen dieser Art
sind z.B. solche des folgenden Typs:

Regel aber nicht mehr als 6 und zweckmäßig sogar nicht größer als 4 sein, da sonst die Produkte in den

Verbindungen der Gruppe (I) können beispielsweise erhalten werden, Wenn man ein Alkylphenol und
Schwef eldichlorid in einem molekularen Verhältnis von ι bis i,5, vorzugsweise 1,2 bis 1,4Mol Schwefeldichlorid
auf je ι Mol des Alkylphenols umsetzt. Hierbei bildet
sich sowohl der einfache Thioäther als auch dessen
Polymere, die bei der Vakuumdestillation als Rückstand erhalten werden können. Auch hier führt man die
Umsetzung vorteilhaft in Gegenwart von inerten Verdünnungsmitteln,
beispielsweise Äthylenchlorid, bei einer Temperatur von 6o bis 140°, vorzugsweise 80 bis
iio°, durch. Man kann derartige Produkte auch herstellen, wenn man ein Dialkyldiphenolsulfid mit
Schwefeldichlorid umsetzt, wobei man etwa 2 Mol Dialkyldiphenolsulfid auf je ι Mol Schwefeldichlorid anwendet.
Verbindungen der Gruppe (II) können hergestellt werden, indem man ein Dialkyldiphenolsulfid
mit Schwefelmonochlorid, zweckmäßig im Mengenverhältnis von etwa 2: 1, umsetzt. Verbindungen der
Gruppe (III) kann man erhalten, wenn man ein Alkylphenol
mit Schwefelmonochlorid umsetzt und ein Molverhältnis von etwa 0,5 bis 0,75 Mol Schwefelmonochlorid
je Mol des Alkylphenols anwendet. Man erhält hierbei neben den Polymeren auch das einfache Dialkyldiphenoldisulfid,
das von den höhermolekularen Verbindungen mit selektiven Lösungsmitteln abgetrennt
werden kann. Man kann derartige Verbindungen auch herstellen, indem man etwa 2 Mol eines
Dialkyldiphenoldisulfids mit 1 Mol Schwefelmonochlorid
umsetzt. Verbindungen der Gruppe (IV) erhält man durch Umsetzung von zweckmäßig etwa 2 Mol
eines Dialkyldiphenoldisulfids mit 1 Mol Schwefeldichlorid. Verbindungen der Gruppe (V) kann man herstellen,
wenn man ein Dialkyldiphenoltetrasulfid mit Schwefelchlorid umsetzt, zweckmäßig unter Anwendung
eines Mol Verhältnisses 2:1.
In allen vorstehend genannten Verbindungen können die Schwefelatome ganz oder teilweise auch durch
Selen- und/oder Telluratome ersetzt werden.
Man setzt die genannten Verbindungen den zu verbessernden Schmierölen zweckmäßig in einer Menge
zwischen etwa 0,1 und 2 % zu, doch kann man unter Umständen auch größere Mengen anwenden. In der Regel
genügt eine Menge von etwa 0,5 %. Die zu verbessernden Schmieröle können beliebiger Art sein. Beispielsweise
eignen sich hochraffinierte Öle, wie z. B. synthetische Schmieröle oder Öle, die durch eine Extraktion
mit selektiven Lösungsmitteln, wie z. B. Phenol, Dichloräthyläther, Furfurol, Propan, Nitrobenzol,
Crotonaldehyd oder mehreren solcher Lösungsmittel, gewonnen wurden, ferner Öle, die mit Bleicherden oder
mit Säure oder mit Aluminiumchlorid behandelt wurden, sogenannte Weißöle, hydrierte Öle usw. Besonders
vorteilhaft wirken sich die neuen Verbesserungsmittel aus bei ölen, deren Viskositätsindex oberhalb 60 liegt
und z. B. 80, 100 oder noch mehr beträgt. Auch hochviskose Schmieröle können verbessert werden, z. B.
solche, deren Viskosität bei 990 etwa bei 35 oder 40 Sekunden Saybolt liegt, selbst solche, deren Viskosität
bei 380 über 100 Sekunden beträgt. Derartige Öle können
sowohl in ungereinigtem Zustand als auch nach beliebiger Raffination verwendet werden. Auch Steinkohlenteer-
oder Ölschieferdestillate, ferner Neutralöle und Bright-Stocköle, Fraktionen von Krackrückständen,
öle, die durch Kondensation oder Polymerisation gewonnen wurden, können verbessert werden.
Es spielt auch keine Rolle, ob die Öle paraffinfrei sind oder Paraffin enthalten oder gegebenenfalls entparaffiniert
sind. Weiterhin kann man den Schmierölen auch Farbstoffe, Metallseifen, Stockpunktserniedriger,
Schlammverteiler, Oxydationsverzögerer, Verdikkungsmittel, Mittel zur Verbesserung des Viskositätsindex, Mittel zur Erhöhung der Schmierfähigkeit,
Harze, Kautschuk, fette Öle, durch Erhitzen verdickte Öle, geschwefelte fette Öle, Mittel zur Erhöhung der
Schmierfähigkeit bei sehr hohen Drücken, Organometallverbindungen, Bright-Stocköle, voltolisierte Öle
und Fette oder Mineralöle oder Paraffine, ferner feste Stoffe, wie Graphit, Zinkoxyd, oder andere bekannte
Zusatzstoffe zumischen.
Besonders wertvolle Mischungen erhält man bei dem vorliegenden Verfahren, wenn man den Schmierölen
nicht nur die Alkylphenolschwefelderivate, sondern außerdem noch Mittel zur Erhöhung der Schmierfähigkeit,
insbesondere Ester, vorzugsweise solche Fettsäuren mit mehr als 10 Kohlenstoffatomen, zusetzt.
Derartige Ester sind z. B. die Isopropylester der Säuren, die bei der partiellen Oxydation von Paraffin erhalten
werden. Man kann auch die Oxygruppen der Alkylphenolschwefelderivate ganz oder teilweise mit organischen
Säuren, z. B. Fettsäuren, verestern. Die Mengen dieser Mittel zur Erhöhung der Schmierfähigkeit liegen
in der Regel zwischen 0,1 und 5 %, vorzugsweise zwischen 0,5 und 2 °/0.
Die Erfindung soll nunmehr an Hand einiger Beispiele näher erläutert werden. Während in den Beispielen
1 und 2 die Herstellung der neuen Zusatzstoffe
näher erläutert ist, beschreiben die übrigen Beispiele die Verbesserung von Schmierölen und die dabei erzielten
Wirkungen. Soweit hierbei auf die Korrosionsprobe und die Sauerstoffaufnahme Bezug genommen ist, gilt
das im Hauptpatent Gesagte. Das gleiche trifft auch für den Sligh-Test zu, mit dem einzigen Unterschied,
daß die Oxydation 24 Stunden fortgesetzt wird.
Die Korrosionsprobe wird wie folgt ausgeführt: Ein blanker Kupferstreifen wird 3 Stunden in das auf ioo°
erhitzte Öl eingetaucht. Wenn das Öl korrodierenden Schwefel enthält, zeigt sich dies durch eine Verfärbung
oder Anfressung des Kupferstreifens.
Die Bleiverträglichkeitsprobe dient zur Bestimmung der Neigung des Öles, metallische Lager zu korrodieren.
Bei dieser Probe werden 1500 ecm des Öles auf einer Temperatur von 162,8° gehalten und 5 Stunden gegen
je zwei Lager aus einer Kupfer-Blei- und Cadmium-Silber-Legierung versprüht. Das von den Lagern herabtropf
ende Öl wird im Kreislauf erneut versprüht. Die Lager werden vor und nach der Probe gewogen. Man
wiederholt die Probe dann, nachdem man dem öl eine lösliche Bleiverbindung, z.B. Bleioleat, in steigenden
Mengen zugesetzt hat, die je 0,005 Gewichtsprozent Blei entsprechen. Ein Gewichtsverlust der Lager von
50 mg zeigt an, daß die Bleiverträglichkeit des Öles überschritten ist, und der in der vorhergehenden Probe
verwendete Zusatz von Blei gibt die Bleiverträglichkeit an. Wenn diese Verträglichkeit unterhalb von 0,020
liegt, wird dies als ungenügend betrachtet. iao
Man löst 1 Mol Tertiäramylphenol in Äthylenchlorid und erhitzt die Lösung unter dem Rückflußkühler zum
Sieden. Man gibt dann langsam unter Rühren 1J2 Mol
Schwefelchlorid S2Cl2, gelöst in Äthylenchlorid, zu.
Wenn alles Schwefelchlorid zugegeben ist, erhitzt man die Mischung noch weiter zum Sieden, bis keine weitere
Entwicklung von Chlorwasserstoff eintritt. Dies erfordert etwa 6 Stunden, doch kann.man diese Zeit verkürzen,
indem man ein inertes Gas, beispielsweise Stickstoff oder Rauchgase, durch die Mischung hindurchleitet.
Das Äthylenchlorid wird dann abdestilliert, ebenso etwa vorhandenes nicht umgesetztes
Amylphenol durch Destillation im Vakuum, wobei die
to Temperatur zweckmäßig 150 bis 1750 nicht übersteigen
soll. Der Destillationsrückstand besteht im wesentlichen aus Tertiäramylphenoldisulfid. Dieses ist eine
dunkelbraune bis rötlich, gefärbte viskose Flüssigkeit, die in den meisten organischen Lösungsmitteln, insbesondere
auch in Mineralölen und deren Fraktionen, wie Benzin, Kerosin, Dieselölen und Schmierölen, löslich
ist. Das Produkt kann unmittelbar verwendet werden oder auch durch eine Behandlung mit selektiven
Lösungsmitteln oder Ädsorbentien, wie Bleicherden, gereinigt werden.
Andere geeignete Polysulfide erhält man beispielsweise, indem man Alkyloxythiophenole mit Schwefelmonochlorid
oder Schwefeldichlorid kondensiert. Die Alkyloxythiophenole können durch Reduktion entweder
aus den oben beschriebenen Alkylphenoldisulfiden oder auch aus Alkylphenolchlorsulfonsäure hergestellt
werden. Eine solche Behandlung verläuft beispielsweise nach folgenden Gleichungen:

125 Teile Ditertiäramyldiphenolsulfid werden in
630 TeilenÄthylenchlorid gelöst und unter einem Rückflußkühler zum Sieden erhitzt. Dann gibt man unter
Rühren eine Lösung von 18 Teilen Schwefeldichlorid in 125 Teilen Äthylenchlorid hinzu. Die Reaktionsmasse
wird, wie im Beispiel 1 beschrieben, aufgearbeitet. Man erhält 134 Teile eines polymeren Ditertiäramyldi-

OH phenolsulfids. Dieses ist eine dunkelrote viskose Flüssigkeit, die in Äther, Alkohol, Aceton, Schwefelkohlenstoff,
Halogenkohlenwasserstoffen und insbesondere auch in Mineralölen und deren Fraktionen, wie Benzin,
Kerosin und Schmierölen, löslich ist.
Man löst in einem mineralischen Schmieröl vom Typ S.A.E.20, das einen Viskositätsindex von 90 hat, 0,2 %
Ditertiäramyldiphenoldisulfid. Eine entsprechende Lösung wird hergestellt aus dem gleichen Öl und Ditertiärbutyldiphenoldisulfid.
Die Eigenschaften der so erhaltenen Mischungen A und B im Vergleich zum ursprünglichen
Öl sind in der nachfolgenden Tabelle wiedergegeben.

In einem C.F.R.-Motor (Cooperative Fuel Research) vergleicht man unter denselben Bedingungen ein hochviskoses Mid-Continentschmieröl mit einer Viskosität
von 72 Sekunden Saybolt bei 990 und Mischungen dieses
Öles mit Ditertiäramyldiphenoldisulfid. Nach jedem Versuch wurde der Motor auseinandergenommen und
sein Zustand, insbesondere das Aussehen der Kolben, Ventile und Zylinder, zahlenmäßig bewertet. Man erhält
auf diese Weise eine allgemeine Bewertungszahl, die um so höher ist, je schlechter der Zustand des Motors
ist. Jeder Versuch dauerte 14 Stunden und wurde bei einer Kühlflüssigkeitstemperatur von etwa 1900
durchgeführt.
