Description
Es ist bekannt, daß Phenole und aromatische Amine die Oxydation von Mineralölen,
insbesondere Schmierölen, zu verzögern vermögen. Es hat sich indessen gezeigt, daß
nicht, wie man bisweilen angenommen hat, alle Verbindungen dieser Art die Oxydation
beliebiger öle verhindern, sondern daß manche Stoffe bei bestimmten Ölen unwirksam
sind oder die Oxydationsbeständigkeit sogar ungünstig beeinflussen.
Bei der Verbesserung von Schmierölen kommt es weiterhin nicht allein darauf an,
die Oxydationsbeständigkeit des Öles bei gewöhnlicher Temperatur zu verbessern, sondem
das öl muß auch bei den hohen Temperaturen beständig sein, denen es während des
Gebrauchs ausgesetzt wird, 'beispielsweise in Verbrennungsmotoren. Es darf auch in Berührung
mit Metallen keinen Schlamm oder andere feste Stoffe absetzen und die Kolben und die Kolbenringe nicht verpichen. Auch
müssen die Oxydationsverhinderer bei den üblichen Gebrauchstemperaturen in dem öl
löslich sein und dürfen auch bei tiefen Temperaturen, z. B. von —35 oder —45 °, nicht
ausfallen. Auch die übrigen Eigenschaften des Öles, z. B. seine Farbe, die Koksbildung
im Conradson-Test, die Korrosion, die Viscosität, der Viscositätsindex und die Dichte,
sollen nicht ungünstig beeinflußt werden.
Bisher hat man kaum einen Oxydationsverhinderer für Schmieröle gekannt, der alle
diese Eigenschaften in dem erwünschten Maße besitzt. Im allgemeinen beeinflussen die
Oxydationsverhinderer die Emulsionsbildung, das Verhalten im Conradson-Test und andere
wichtige Eigenschaften der Schmiermittel im ungünstigen Sinne. Man hat daher schon
versucht, Mischungen mehrerer Oxydationsverhinderer zu verwenden, aber es hat sich
clabei gezeigt, daß die ungünstige Eigenschaft eines Stoffes durch Zugabe eines anderen
Stoffes nicht beseitigt wird. Beispielsweise verbessern zahlreiche organische Verbindungen
die Oxydationsbeständigkeit, führen aber ίο zur Bildung von Schlamm bei Berührung mit
Metallen. Andere Stoffe dagegen bilden wenig oder keinen Schlamm, 'beeinflussen dafür
aber auch die Oxydationsbeständigkeit nur wenig. Mischt man solche Stoffe miteinander,
so wird die Schlammbildung häufig größer, und im allgemeinen wird der Sligh-Test
verschlechtert. Andere Verbindungen wieder geben einen guten Sligh-Test, aber
beim praktischen Gebrauch in Motoren ver-Ursachen sie in sehr hohem Maße Ringverpichung.
Es wurde nun gefunden, daß man Schmieröle ohne die geschilderten Nachteile in hervorragender
Weise verbessern kann, wenn man ihnen solche Diarylthioäther zusetzt, die in jedem aromatischen Kern mindestens eine
Hydroxylgruppe und mindestens eine Alkylgruppe enthalten. Vorzugsweise verwendet
man A'erbindungen der genannten Art. die

oder eine Cyangruppe oder andere die oxydationsverhindernden Eigenschaften nicht
beeinflussende Gruppen oder einen anderen Substituenten bedeutet. Besonders gut geeignet
sind Dialkyldiphenolthioäther der Formel

worin R eine Alkylgruppe, wiez. B. die Äthyl-, Isopropyl-, Tertiärbutyl-, Tertiäramyl- oder
n-Butylgruppe bedeutet. Dabei soll vorzugsweise die Alkylgruppe in p-Stellung *ur
Hydroxylgruppe angeordnet sein.
Stoffe dieser Art können in verschiedener Weise hergestellt werden. Beispielsweise
kann man das entsprechende alkylierte Phenol mit Schwefelchlorid S2CL oder -dichlorid
SCl2 erhitzen, wobei Chlorwasserstoff abge-.
spalten wird. Man kann auch ein alkyliertes oder nichtalkyliertes Phenol mit Schwefelchlorid
oder -dichlorid erhitzen und das entstehende Produkt alkylieren, z. B. indem man
es mit einem Olefin oder auch mit einem Alkohol oder Alkylchlorid in Gegenwart eines
Kondensationsmittels, wie Schwefelsäure, Borfluorid oder Aluminiumchlorid, behandelt.
Man kann auch zunächst aus Phenolen und Schwefelchlorid oder -dichlorid Thioäther
herstellen, diese in alkalischem Medium mit Alkylchloriden oder Dialkylsulfaten umsetzen
und die so gebildeten Äther in Gegenwart von wasserfreiem Aluniiniumchlorid zu den
Dialkyldiphenolthioäthern umlagern.
Besonders wertvolle Oxydationsverhinderer erhält man aus alkylierten Phenolen, die
durch Kondensation von Phenol mit den.bei der Spaltung von Erdölen erhaltenen C4- und
bzw. oder C5-Fraktionen gewonnen wurden. Die genannten Fraktionen sind reich an
sekundären und tertiären Olefinen mit 4 und bzw. oder 5 Kohlenstoffatomen. Man kann
dabei auch so vorgehen, daß man die sekundären Olefine von den tertiären trennt und
jede Stoffgruppe für sich mit Phenolen kondensiert. Die rohen Kondensationsprodukte
können in beliebiger Weise weitergereinigt werden, z. B. durch Destillation, Extraktion
oder durch Behandlung mit Bleicherden oder Säuren.
Die neuen Oxydationsverhinderer wirken in mineralischen Schmierölen auch bei erhöhter
Temperatur besonders günstig. Insbesondere werden dadurch hochraffinierte öle
stark verbessert, beispielsweise synthetische Schmieröle oder öle, die aus Schmierölfraktionen
durch Behandlung mit selektiven Lösungsmitteln, wie Phenol, Dichloräthyläther, Furfurol, Propan, Nitrobenzol, Crotonaldehyd
oder mehreren solcher Lösungsmittel, z. B. Propan und Kresol, gewonnen wurden. Auch öle, die mit Bleicherden oder Säuren
oder mit x\luminiumchlorid raffiniert wurden oder die durch eine Druckhydrierung gewonnen
wurden, können nach dem vorliegenden Verfahren verbessert werden. Besonders wertvoll ist diese Möglichkeit für öle, deren
Viscositätsindex oberhalb 50, z. B. oberhalb oder 80 oder gar 100 liegt. Auch hoch- .
viscose Schmieröle, z. B. solche mit Viscositäten oberhalb 1,152° oder 1,3210E bei 990
oder oberhalb 2,94° E bei 380, können verbessert werden, und zwar sowohl im Rohzustand
als auch nach einer mehr oder weniger weitgehenden Vorbehandlung, z. B. durch i«5
Destillation, Behandlung mit chemischen oder physikalischen Raffinationsmitteln oder durch
Vültolisierung. Endlich kommen auch Teeröle oder Ölschieferdestillate, Rückstandsöle,
bei der Spaltung gewonnene hochsiedende »20 Fraktionen und andere Öle in Frage, und
zwar einerlei, öl) sie paraffinfrei sind oder
Paraffin enthalten oder ob dieses ganz oder teilweise daraus abgeschieden wurde.
Die neuen Oxydationsverhinderer werden
den ölen im allgemeinen in geringen Mengen, in der Regel solchen unter ι °/o. z. B. 0,05
bis 0,5 %) zugesetzt, doch kann man auch
größere Mengen, z. B. 5 °/0, anwenden, wenn
es sich um besonders unbeständige Öle handelt.
Die so verbesserten Schmieröle können auch andere Zusatzstoffe, beispielsweise Farbstoffe,
Seifen, Stockpunktserniedriger, Schlammverteiler, andere Oxydationsverhinderer, Verdickungsmittel,
Mittel zur Verbesserung des Viscositätsindex, Mittel zur Erhöhung des Schmiervermögens, Harze, Kautschuk, fette
Öle und deren Umwandlungsprodukte, Organometallverbindungen,!raffinierte Rückstandsöle,
Voltolisierungsprodukte von Fetten, Mineralölen oder Paraffinen oder kolloidal verteilte feste Stoffe, wie Graphit oder Zinkoxyd,
enthalten.
In den nachstehenden Beispielen werden für die Untersuchung der Öle die folgenden
Untersuchungsmethoden benutzt:
i. Sauerstoff aufnahme
Diese dient zur Bestimmung der Oxydationsbeständigkeit der öle bei erhöhter
Temperatur. Die Werte werden angegeben in der Anzahl cm3 Sauerstoff, die von 10 cm3
des Öles bei 2000 in Abständen von 15 Minuten
absorbiert werden.
2. Die Konusprobe
■ Diese dient zur Bestimmung der Schlammbildung, wenn das öl mit erhitzten Metallen
in Berührung ist. Man benutzt einen erhitzten Metallkonus, der in der Regel aus Stahl gefertigt
ist und auf der Innenseite seines Mantels eine schraubenförmige Vertiefung hat, derart, daß das öl, das oben auf den Konus
tropft, etwa 1 Minute benötigt, um an seinem unteren Ende anzukommen. Man führt die
Probe durch, indem man 60 cm3 Öl aus einem Tropftrichter im Verlaufe von 2 Stunden auf
den Konus tropfen läßt. Dies geschieht in der Regel bei 2500. Der Konus wird vor der
Probe gewogen. Nachdem alles Öl durchgeflossen ist, wäscht man ihn mit Benzin, um
etwa anhaftendes Öl zu entfernen, und wägt ihn wieder. Die angeführte Zahl gibt die
Niederschlagsmenge in Gramm an.
3. Ringverpichungsprobe
Durch diese Probe wird die Neigung des
Öles zur Kolbenringv.erpichung festgestellt.
Man benutzt dabei das öl zur Schmierung eines C. F. R.-(Cooperative Fuel-Research)-Motors
mit einer Kühlflüssigkeitstemperatur von 1990, wohei man während 14 Stunden
1134g Öl benutzt. Die Kol'benbewertung ist
eine Zahl, die das allgemeine Aussehen der Kolben nach dieser Probe angibt. Sie ist
um so höher, je schlechter das Aussehen des Kolbens ist. In der Regel beobachtet man
auch die Anzahl der verpichten Ringe und, in Bogengraden ausgedrückt, die Länge der
Ringabschnitte, auf denen Verpichung eingetreten ist.
4. Sligh-Test
Dieser bestimmt die Neigung des Öles zur Schlammbildung unter oxydierenden Bedingungen.
Die Probe wird in der in Proc. A. S. T. M. Band 24, S. 964 (1924) beschriebenen
Weise durchgeführt.
5. Emulsionsprobe
Diese dient zur Bestimmung der Emulgierbarkeit von Turbinenschmierölen. Sie ist
beschrieben im Bur. Mines Circ. 323 A und B sowie im Federal Specif. Stock Catalog, Section IV DV-L-791, 3. 10. 1933.
Beispiel ι
Einem Schmieröl, das durch Phenolextraktion gewonnen wurde und einen Viscositätsindex
von 90 hat, gibt man 0,2 °/„ Ditertiärr butyldiphenolthioäther zu. Die Konusprobe
ergibt folgende Werte:
ohne Zusatz ,. 0,67,
mit Zusatz 0,27.
Die Sauerstoffaufnahme beträgt ohne Zusatz 218, mit Zusatz 12-13-14-17 cm3.
Ein raffiniertes Schmieröl vom Typ SAE 50
wird mit 0,2 % Dikresolthioäther gemischt. Die Konusprobe ergibt
ohne Zusatz 0,67,
mit Zusatz 0,07.
Ein mineralisches Schmieröl mit der Viscosität 2,67° E bei 99° ergibt bei der Ringverpichungsprobe
folgende Werte:

Dem Öl wurden 0,2 °/0 Ditertiärbutyldiphenolthioäther

Es ist zwar bekannt, Schmieröle durch Zusatz von Dibenzyldisulfid oder von solchen
Verbindungen, die an einem aromatischen Kern eine oxydationsverhindernde Gruppe,
wie z. B. eine Hydroxylgruppe, und eine stabilisierende Gruppe, beispielsweise ein als
Äther gebundenes Schwefelatom, enthalten, zu verbessern. Die erfindungsgemäß verwendeten
Diarylthioäther, die in jedem aromatischen Kern mindestens eine Hydroxylgruppe oder neben mindestens einer an einen aromatischen
Kern gebundenen Hydroxylgruppe mindestens eine Alkylgruppe enthalten, zeichnen sich diesen bekannten Zusatzstoffen
gegenüber durch wesentlich größere Löslichkeit in mineralischen Schmierölen, durch
höhere Wirksamkeit sowie dadurch aus, daß sie die Korrosion mancher Lagermetalle oder
ihrer Bestandteile, wie Blei und Kupfer, durch die Schmiermittel zurückdrängen.
Claims (1)
- Patentanspruch:Schmieröl, gekennzeichnet durch einen Gehalt an solchen Diarylthioäthern, die in jedem aromatischen Kern mindestens eine Hydroxylgruppe und mindestens eine Alkylgruppe enthalten.
