Description
Die Erfindung betrifft die Verwendung von Estern der Phosphorsäure, Phosphinsäure und von
Phosphinoxyden als Schmiermittel, insbesondere als hydraulische Flüssigkeit, welche zur Verwendung
in hydraulisch betätigten Einrichtungen, wie Bremsvorrichtungen, Stoßdämpfern, Schaltwerken
und ähnlichen hydraulisch arbeitenden Vorrichtungen geeignet ist.
Es sind bereits verschiedene Flüssigkeiten zur Anwendung in hydraulischen Systemen als hydraulische
Kraftübertragungsmittel vorgeschlagen worden. Viele der früher vorgeschlagenen Flüssigkeiten
zeigen bei ihrer Verwendung verschiedene Nachteile, wie korrodierende und zersetzende Einwirkung
auf Metall- oder Kautschukteile der hydraulischen Vorrichtung, Neigung zur Verflüchtigung
bei den Arbeitstemperaturen, Mangel an Schmiervermögen usw.
Eine der bei der Verwendung in hydraulischen Vorrichtungen für die Luftfahrt besonders geforderten
Eigenschaften ist das hohe Widerstandsvermögen gegen Entflammbarkeit. Es ist bereits
früher festgestellt worden, daß phosphorhaltige Ester diese Eigenschaften in hohem Maße besitzen.
Es muß aber bemerkt werden, daß eine optimale Kombination von Eigenschaften nur bei einer verhältnismäßig
kleinen Gruppe von Verbindungen festzustellen ist. Neben der praktischen Nichtentflammbarkeit
sind weitere erwünschte Eigenschaften hydraulischer Flüssigkeiten: Oxydations-
beständigkeit, hoher Viskositätsindex, geeignete Viskosität bei den Arbeitstemperaturen, niederer
Fließpunkt und andere nachstehend noch zu erörternde Eigenschaften. Die bekanntesten der verwendeten
Phosphorsäureester zur Verwendung in hydraulischen Einrichtungen für die Luftfahrt sind
solche mit 4 bis 8 Kohlenstoffatomen je Kohlenwasserstoffradikal, wie Trioctylphosphat, Tributylphosphat
und Trikresylphosphat. Wenn diese besonderen Verbindungen auch in vieler Hinsicht
geeignet sind, so ist doch festgestellt worden, daß sie gewisse Nachteile aufweisen, insbesondere hinsichtlich
Korrosion und Steigerung der Viskosität beim Erhitzen.
Gegenstand der Erfindung ist ein Schmiermittel, insbesondere eine hydraulische Flüssigkeit, welche
die erwähnten Nachteile nicht aufweist und unter verschiedenartigen Arbeitsbedingungen brauchbar
ist. " ' '' "
Die geforderten Bedingungen werden durch die Verwendung der beanspruchten Verbindungen erfüllt,
welche aus einer Phosphorverbindung der allgemeinen Formel
bestehen oder eine solche enthalten, worin X entweder eine Gruppe R oder eine Gruppe OR darstellt
und mindestens ein R ein verzweigtes Nonylradikal ist, während die etwa vorhandenen übrigen R
Kohlenwasserstoffreste darstellen. Diese allgemeine Formel umfaßt die folgenden Klassen von Verbindungen
:
i. Phosphonate (Phosphonsäureester) mit der

In allen vorstehenden Strukturformeln bedeutet der Substituent R eine Kohlenwasserstoffgruppe,
wobei mindestens eine dieser Gruppen eine verzweigte Nonylgruppe darstellt.
Die verzweigte Nonylgruppe, welche -in den
vorstehend genannten Verbindungsklassen einen wesentlichen Substituenten darstellt, kann gesättigt
oder ungesättigt sein. Vorzugsweise ist diese Gruppe eine Kohlenwasserstoffkette, welche mindestens
zwei Kohlenwasserstoffzweige und vorzugsweise mindestens drei Kohlenwasserstoffzweige
enthält. Die nachstehend angegebenen Gruppen erläutern die erfmdungsgemäß in Betracht kommenden
Substituenten. Von den angeführten Gruppen wird die 3, 5, 5-Trimethylhexylgruppe besonders
bevorzugt.

Bevorzugte Ausgangsstoffe für die erfmdungsgemäßen, eine verzweigte Nonylgruppe enthaltenden
Phosphorverbindungen sind die sogenannten »Oxo«-Alkohole, welche durch Umsetzung von
Diisobutylen, Kohlenmonoxyd und Wasserstoff in Anwesenheit eines Kobaltkatalysators hergestellt
werden. Ein anderes Mittel zur Herstellung des Ausgangsstoffes, der die Nonylgruppe enthält, ist
die Umsetzung von Diisobutylen und Formaldehyd in Anwesenheit von Zinkchlorid und anschließende
Hydrierung. Der aus solchen Reaktionen hauptsächlich gewonnene Alkohol ist 3, 5, 5-Trimethylhexanol.
Bevorzugt werden als Schmiermittel und hydraulische Flüssigkeiten Phosphonate (Phosphonsäureester)
verwendet, welche mindestens zwei verzweigte Nonylgruppen aufweisen.
Typische Phosphonate, welche für die Zwecke der vorliegenden Erfindung verwendet werden
können, sind folgende:

(3, 5, 5-trimethylhexyl)-n-butylester. Vorzugsweise sollen zwei verzweigte Nonylradikale
am Phosphor über Sauerstoff gebunden sein. Eine der Nonylgruppen kann jedoch auch
ίο direkt an das Phosphoratom gebunden sein. Vorzugsweise
hat die Kohlenwasserstoffgruppe, welche den Phosphonsäureester neben den beiden verzweigten
Nonylgruppen vervollständigt, 4 bis 12 Kohlenstoff atome. Es hat sich als besonders vofteilhaft
erwiesen, verzweigte ungesättigte Kohlenwasserstoffgruppen zu verwenden, wie verzweigte
Octenylgruppen. Wenn bei Temperaturen unter — 25° eine verhältnismäßig niedrige Viskosität
gewünscht wird', sollen die Kohlenwasserstoffgruppen, welche den Phosphonsäureester neben den
verzweigten Nonylgruppen vervollständigen, geradkettige Kohlenwasserstoffgruppen sein. Die Anwesenheit
ungesättigter Bindungen ergibt, wie gefunden wurde, erhöhte thermische Beständigkeit
und verbesserte Korrosionseigenschaften im Vergleich zu den entsprechenden Phosphonaten, welche
die entsprechenden gesättigten Kohlenwasserstoffgruppen enthalten.
Eine andere Klasse von erfindungsgemäß ver- \vendbaren Verbindungen umfaßt Phosphinsäureester,
in welchen mindestens zwei der Kohlenwasserstoffsubstituenten verzweigte Nonylgruppen
darstellen.
Vorzugsweise sind die in ,den erfindungsgemäßen Gemischen verwendeten Phosphinsäureester solche,
in welchen die beiden verzweigten Nonylgruppen direkt an das Phosphoratom gebunden sind. Eine
der Nonylgruppen kann jedoch über Sauerstoff an das Phosphoratom gebunden sein. Die folgende
Liste enthält Beispiele von Phosphinsäureestern, welche dieser Definition entsprechen:

Es können jedoch auch Phosphinsäureester verwendet werden, welche nur eine verzweigte Nonylgruppe
enthalten, wie di-n-Butylphosphinsäure-3, S, 5-trimethylhexylester.
Die letzte im Rahmen der vorliegenden Erfindung bevorzugte Klasse umfaßt die Phosphinoxyde,
welche mindestens zwei verzweigte Nonylgruppen enthalten. Beispiele aus dieser Verbindungsklasse
sind folgende:

tri-(2, 4, 4-Trimethylhexyl)-phosphinoxyd, Bis-(3,5,5-trimethylhexyl)-octylphosphinoxyd,

pentenylphosphinoxyd,
BiS"(3» 5» 5-trimethylhexyl)-n-butylphosphinoxyd.
BiS"(3» 5» 5-trimethylhexyl)-n-butylphosphinoxyd.
Typische Monoisononylphosphorverbindungen sind iso-Nonylphosphonsäuredibutylester, Butylisononylphosphinsäurebutylester,
Isononyl - bis-(2-äthylhexyl) -phosphinoxyd.
Neben den verschiedenen oben angeführten Verbindungen umfassen andere geeignete Gruppen
auch solche Verbindungen, in welchen die verzweigten Nonylgruppen mit dem Phosphor oder
mit dem Sauerstoff mit Hilfe eines sekundären oder tertiären Kohlenstoffatoms verbunden sind. Beispiele
solcher Verbindungen sind iso-Octenylphosphonsäure-[bis - (1, 3, 3-trimethylhexyl) ] - ester,
Bis-(i, i, 5 - trimethylhexyl) - phosphinsäurehexylester,
Bis-(i, 3, 5-trimethylhexyl)-n-octylphosphinoxyd.
Die erfindungsgemäßen Phosphorverbindungen, welche mindestens eine verzweigte Nonylgruppe
enthalten, weisen eine einzigartige Kombination physikalischer Eigenschaften auf, die sich in einer
außergewöhnlichen Überlegenheit bei der Verwendung als nicht entflammbare hydraulische
Flüssigkeiten oder Schmiermittel äußert. Diese Verbindungen stellen Flüssigkeiten dar, welche im
allgemeinen Stockpunkte ζ wischen—40 und—620 C
aufweisen. Sie besitzen einen besonders hohen Viskositätsindex, gewöhnlich zwischen 100 und
150. Die Verbindungen zeigen vollständige Mischbarkeit mit Verdickungsmittel und den Viskositätsindex verbessernden Zusätzen, wie den polymeren
Estern von Methacrylsäuren, selbst bei niederen Arbeitstemperaturen.
Eine Eigenschaft dieser Verbindungsklasse, welche sie von ihren höheren und niederen Homologen
unterscheidet, ist ihre außergewöhnliche Korrosionsbeständigkeit. Es ist gefunden worden,
daß diese Stoffe praktisch überhaupt keine Korrosion gegenüber Kupfer, Magnesium, Eisen,
Cadmium oder Aluminium zeigen. Obwohl die Anwesenheit von. Verdickungsmitteln, wie den
polymeren Methacrylsäureester^ ihre korrodierende Wirkung in beschränktem Maße erhöht, läßt sich
diese durch Zugabe kleiner Mengen Schwefel oder Schwefelverbindungen, wie Aryldisulfid und
Epoxydverbindungen, wie Glycidylphenyläther (Phenoläther des 2, 3-Epoxypropanols), leicht ausgleichen.
Die erfindungsgemäßen Stoffe haben in den meisten Fällen eine zur Verwendung als hydraulische
Flüssigkeit geeignete Konsistenz. Gewöhnlich liegt ihre Viskosität zwischen 10 und 25 cSt
bei 380 C. Im Vergleich zu den unmittelbar benachbarten
Homologen besitzen die vorliegend behandelten verzweigten Nonylphosphorverbindungen

hohe Flamm- und Brennpunkte, Schließlich hat sich auch gezeigt, daß die Klasse der erfindungsgemäßen
Verbindungen äußerst oxydationsbeständig ist, was sich durch die außergewöhnlich langsame
Steigerung der Viskosität bei Einwirkung von Sauerstoff sowie auch in dem langsamen Anwachsen
der Säurezahl unter der gleichen Einwirkung äußert.
Die verzweigten Nonylphosphorverbindungen ίο gemäß der Erfindung werden besonders verbessert
durch einen Zusatz polymerisierter Ester aus der Acrylsäurereihe, wie polymerisierter Acrylsäureester,
und insbesondere polymerisierter Methacrylsäureester. Die verwendeten polymeren Ester sollen
Molgewichte von etwa 5000 bis etwa 25 000, vorzugsweise 5000 bis 15000, aufweisen, wobei diese
Angaben Durchschnittszahlen für die vorliegenden Gemische von Polymeren darstellen. Die Säuren
sollen mit aliphatischen Alkoholen mit 2 bis ao 15 Kohlenstoffatomen (Äthyl-, Butyl-, Octyl-,
Dodecylalkohol) verestert sein, und die Polymere können Polymerisate eines einzelnen Esters oder
Mischpolymerisate aus einem Gemisch solcher Ester darstellen. Die Bezeichnung »polymerisierte
Ester« soll beide erwähnten Arten umfassen.
Die polymeren Ester sind im allgemeinen erhältlich als konzentrierte Dispersionen in einem
Lösungsmittel, wie Kerosin oder höhersiedenden Erdöldestillaten, und die im Handel erhältlichen
Sorten enthalten gewöhnlich etwa gleiche Teile des Polymers und des Lösungsmittels. Das Polymer
soll in einer untergeordneten Menge verwendet werden, welche aber mindestens für eine wesentliche
Verdickung der Phosphorverbindung und besonders zweckmäßig auch zur Verbesserung des
Viskositätsindexes des Gemisches ausreicht. Gewöhnlich schwankt die zu diesem Zweck erforderliche Menge zwischen 0,5 und 5 Gewichtsprozent
der Gesamtmischung, je nach dem ursprünglichen Viskositätsindex derselben und der gewünschten
verbessernden Wirkung.
Wenn auch die verzweigten Nonylverbindungen, wie sie im vorstehenden beschrieben worden sind,
ohne weitere Zusätze verwendet werden, sind sie auch in Verbindung mit Glykolen, phosphorhaltigen
Estern, oder Alkylenoxydpoilymeren, Estern von Dicarbonsäuren,
Kohlenwasserstoffen, wie Äthylenoxyd - Propylenoxyd - Mischpolymerisate (»Ucon-Flüssigkeit«),
Monoalkyläther. von Äthylglykol, wie der Äthylenglykol-Monobutyläther und der Äthylenglykol-Metlhyläthyläther, oder polymerisiertes
Propylenoxyd, Trikresylphosp'hat, T.rioctylphosphat, Di-(2-äthylhexyl)-sebacat sowie leichten
mineralischen Schmierölen und Kerosin verwendbar. Die genannten Stoffe können in einer Menge
von 5 bis 50 Gewichtsprozent, berechnet auf das Gewicht der phosphorhaltigen Verbindungen mit
verzweigter Nonylgruppe, zugesetzt werden.
Die Korrosions- und Oxydationseigenschaften werden in hohem Maße verbessert durch Zugabe
untergeordneter Mengen von Epoxydverbindungen und bzw. oder schwefelhaltigen organischen Verbindungen.
Im allgemeinen ist eine Menge zwischen etwa 0,05 und 5 Gewichtsprozent der Gesamtmischung
ausreichend. Äther des Glycidyls (2, 3-Epoxypropanol), wie Glycidylphenyläther,
Glycidylcyclohexyläther, Glycidylbenzyläther, GIycidylisopropyläther
und Glycidylorthokresyläther, haben sich als besonders wirksam erwiesen. Andere für diesen Zweck geeignete Epoxyde sind Isobutyloxyd,
Pentadienmonoxyd, Styroloxyd, 2, 3-Epoxypentan sowie Epichlorhydrin. Typische, besonders
geeignete schwefelhaltige organische Verbindungen sind die Kohlenwasserstoffsulfide und insbesondere
die Kohlenwasserstoffdisulfide, einschließlich der Dialkylsulfide oder Diaryldisulfide, wie Dibenzyldisulfid,
Bis-(methylentolylsulfid), Dibutyldisulfid und von Paraffin abgeleitete Disulfide.
. Die nachstehenden Beispiele erläutern typische Herstellungsweisen der erfindungsgemäß verwendeten
Phosphorverbindungen und zeigen auch ihre vorteilhaften Eigenschaften im Vergleich zu benachbarten
Homologen.
Beispiel ι
Zur Herstellung von 2, 4, 4-Trimethylpentenylphosphonsäure-bis-(3,
5, 5 - trimethylhexyl) - ester wurde folgende Arbeitsweise verwendet. Zu einer Lösung von 302 g 3, 5, 5-Trimethylhexanol, 158 g
Pyridin und 1000 cm3 Toluol (gekühlt auf o°) wurden langsam 219 g 2, 4, 4-Trimethylpentenylphosphonsäuredichlorid
zugesetzt. Nach beendeter Zugabe wurde das Reaktionsgemisch 2 V2 Stunden auf ioo° erhitzt. Nach Filtrieren und Waschen
wurde das Rohprodukt destilliert. Siedepunkt bei 0,6 mm = 176 bis 1770.
Bis - (3, 5, S - trimethylhexyl) - phosphinsäure-2-äthyl-4-methylhexyl-ester
wird in folgender Weise erhalten: Zu einer Lösung von 2 Mol 2-Äthyl-4-methylhexanol
in 2 Mol Pyridin wird 1 Mol 3> 5» 5-Trimethylhexylphosphondichlorid zugesetzt.
Der erhaltene 3, 5, 5-Trimethylhexylphosphinsäure-[bis-(2-äthyl-4-methylhexyl)]-ester
wird mit 1 Mol 3) 5; 5-Trimethylhexylbromid behandelt, wodurch
Bis-(3,5,5-trimethylhexyl)-phosphinsäure-[2-äthyl-4-methylhexyl]
-ester gebildet wird.
Bei Durchführung der nachstehend beschriebenen Arbeitsweise wird tri-(2, 4, 4-Trimethylhexyl)-phosphinoxyd
erhalten.. Zu einem Grignard-Reagens, welches aus 3 Mol 2,4,4-Trimethylbromid
und Magnesiumspänen in Äther hergestellt ist, wird langsam 1 Mol Phosphoroxychlorid zugegeben.
Das Reaktionsgemisch wird 4 Stunden am Rückfluß erhitzt und das Reaktionsprodukt in der üblichen
Weise durch Zugabe von Ammoniumchloridlösung, Waschen mit Wasser und Destillieren gewonnen.
Zur Erläuterung der Eigenschaften der erfindungsgemäß verwendeten Produkte im Vergleich
mit ihren Homologen sind die typischen Eigenschaften verschiedener Verbindungen in der anliegenden
Tabelle zusammengestellt.

Die Prüfung der Entflammbarkeit bei Bestimmung der in der Tabelle angegebenen Zahlen wurde
in einem geänderten offenen Cleveland-Becher durchgeführt, welcher ein Fassungsvermögen von
io cm3 für die Probe anstatt der üblichen 70 cm3
aufwies, wie sie bei dem gewöhnlichen ASTM-Test für Bestimmung des Flamm- und des Brennpunktes
vorgeschrieben sind. Die Prüfung der Oxydationskorrosion wurde durchgeführt nach einer Abwand-
lung der Methode 530.8.1 der Federal Specification VV-L-79id. Eine Probe von 20 cm3 der Flüssigkeit
wird 72 Stunden auf 121 ° in Anwesenheit von verschiedenen Metallstücken erhitzt. Die benutzten
Metallstücke sind in der Form von Platten mit zwei Oberflächen von 1,29 cm2. Während des Versuchs
wird Luft durch die Flüssigkeit geblasen mit einer Geschwindigkeit von 1 1 je Stunde. Am Ende
des Versuchs werden der Gewichtsverlust der Metallplatten und die Erhöhung der Viskosität und
der Säurezahl der Flüssigkeit gemessen.
Die hydraulischen Flüssigkeiten gemäß vorliegender Erfindung können — unabhängig davon, ob
sie die verzweigten Nonyl-Phosphor-Verbindungen allein oder in Kombination mit Verdünnungsmitteln
oder den vorstehend beschriebenen Zusätzen enthalten — als flüssige Kraftübertragungsmittel in
irgendeinem der üblichen hydraulischen Systeme verwendet werden, in welchen Kraft von einem
bewegten Element auf ein zweites Element mit Hilfe einer Flüssigkeit übertragen wird.
Claims (11)
- PATENTANSPRÜCHE:I. Verwendung von Phosphorverbindungen der allgemeinen FormelR
■ X-P = Oin welcher X entweder eine Gruppe R oder eine Gruppe OR bedeutet und mindestens ein R eine verzweigte Nonylgruppe und die übrigen R Kohlenwasserstoffgruppen bedeuten, für sich oder in Mischung mit anderen Stoffen als Schmiermittel, insbesondere als hydraulische Flüssigkeit. - 2. Verwendung von Phosphorverbindungennach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die phosphorhaltige Verbindung ein Phosphonsäureester, ein Phosphinsäureester oder ein Phosphinoxyd ist.
- 3. Verwendung von Phosphorverbindungen nach Anspruch 1 und 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die verzweigte Nonylgruppe eine Kohlenwasserstoffkette mit mindestens zwei oder drei Kohlenwasserstoffzweigeh, z. B. die 3, S, 5-Trimethylhexylgruppe, ist.
- 4. Verwendung von Phosphorverbindungen nach Anspruch 1 bis 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die phosphorhaltigen Verbindungen mindestens zwei verzweigte Nonylgruppen enthalten, wie Bis- (verzweigt - nonyl) -alkenylphosphonate, insbesondere Bis-(3, 5, 5-trimetlhylhexyl)-2, 4, 4-trimethylpentenylphosphonat.
- 5. Verwendung von Phosphorverbindungen nach Anspruch 1 bis 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß als Mischkomponenten Polymerisate eines Acrylsäureesters, eines Methacrylsäureesters oder Mischpolymerisate dieser Ester, welche sich von aliphatischen Alkoholen mit 2 bis 15 Kohlenstoffatomen ableiten, in untergeordneten Mengen vorliegen.
- 6. Verwendung von Phosphorverbindungen nach Anspruch 1 bis 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Polymerisate oder Mischpolymerisate ein Molgewicht zwischen 5000 und 25 000 aufweisen.
- 7. Verwendung von Phosphorverbindungen nach Anspruch 1 bis 6, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Polymerisate oder Mischpolymerisate in einer Menge von 0,5 bis 5 Gewichtsprozent, berechnet auf das gesamte Gemisch, vorliegen.
- 8. Verwendung von Phosphorverbindungen nach Anspruch 1 bis 7, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die eine verzweigte Nonylgruppe enthaltenden Phosphorverbindungen mit einem Stoff verdünnt sind, welcher an sich als hydraulische Flüssigkeit oder Schmieröl geeignet ist.
- 9. Verwendung von Phosphorverbindungen nach Anspruch 1 bis 8, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß dieser Stoff in einer Menge von 5 bis 50 Gewichtsprozent, berechnet auf das Gewicht der eine verzweigte Nonylgruppe enthaltenden Phosphorverbindungen, vorliegt.
- 10. Verwendung von Phosphorverbindungen nach Anspruch 1 bis 9, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß als weitere Mischkomponenten eineEpoxyverbindung und bzw. oder eine schwefelhaltige organische Verbindung in untergeordneter Menge vorliegt.
- 11. Verwendung von Phosphorverbindungen nach Anspruch 1 bis io, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Menge der Epoxyverbindung und bzw. oder schwefelhaltigen organischen Verbindung 0,05 bis S Gewichtsprozent, berechnet auf das gesamte Gemisch, beträgt.1 509516 6.55
