Description
- Verfahren zum Herstellen von Polyäthylen
- Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zum Herstellen von Polyäthylen durch Polymerisation von Athylen bei Temperaturen im Bereich von -80 bis 1200C mittels eines Ziegler-Katalysatorsystems aus (1) einer Zirkon enthaltenden Verbindung sowie (2) einer Aluminium enthaltenden Verbindung.
- Solche Verfahren sind in etlichen Varianten bekannt, wobei jeweils die eingesetzte Zirkon enthaltende Verbindung (1) von besonderer chemischer und/oder chemisch-physikalischer Art ist.
- Die Modifikationen in der Art der Zirkon enthaltenden Verbindung (1) werden vorgenommen, um bestimmte Ziele zu erreichen, z.B. die folgenden: (a) Katalysatorsysteme, die eine erhöhte Ausbeute an Polymerisat zu liefern vermögen, nämlich (a1) Katalysatorsysteme mit einer erhöhten Produktivität, d.h. Systeme, bei denen die Menge an gebildetem Polymerisat pro Gewichtseinheit Zirkon enthaltender Verbindungen (1) erhöht ist bzw.
- (a2) Katalysatorsysteme mit einer erhbhten Aktivität, d.h. Systeme, bei denen die Menge an gebildetem Polymerisat pro Gewichtseinheit Zirkon enthaltender Verbindung (1) und pro Zeiteinheit erhöht ist.
- (b) Katalysatorsysteme, durch die weniger bzw. kein Halogen in das Polymerisat eingebracht wird; - was zu erreichen ist, indem (b1) die Ausbeute gemäß (a) gesteigert wird und/oder (b2) Zirkon enthaltende Verbindungen (1) eingesetzt werden, die möglichst wenig bzw. kein Halogen enthalten.
- (c) Katalysatorsysteme, die ihre positiven Wirkungen auch bei relativ niederen Temperaturen entfalten; - was z.B. für Trockenphasenpolymerisationen von Bedeutung sein kann.
- (d) Katalysatorsysteme, durch welche die morphologischen Eigenschaften der Polymerisate in bestimmter Weise beeinflußt werden, etwa im Sinne einer einheitlichen Korngröße und/ oder eines hohen Schüttgewichtes; - was z.B. für die technologische Beherrschung der Polymerisationssysteme, die Aufarbeitung der Polymerisate und/oder die Verarbeitbarkeit der Polymerisate von Bedeutung sein kann.
- (e) Katalysatorsysteme, die einfach und sicher herzustellen und gut handzuhaben sind; - z.B. solche, die sich in (inerten) Kohlenwasserstoff-Hilfsmedien zubereiten lassen.
- (f) Katalysatorsysteme, die es ermöglichen, bei Polymerisationen unter Einwirkung von Molekulargewichtsreglern, wie Wasserstoff, mit relativ geringen Mengen an Regler auszukommen; - was z.B. für die Thermodynamik der Verfahrensführung von Bedeutung sein kann.
- (g) Katalysatorsysteme, die auf spezielle Polymerisationsverfahren zugeschnitten sind; etwa solche, die z.B. entweder auf die spezifischen Besonderheiten der Suspensionspolymerisation oder auf die spezifischen Besonderheiten der Trockenphasenpolymerisation abgestimmt sind.
- Nach den bisherigen ßrfahrungen gibt es unter den mannigfachen Zielen etliche Ziele, die man durch Modifikationen in der Art der Zirkon enthaltenden Verbindung (1) nur dann erreichen kann, wenn man andere Ziele zurücksetzt.
- Unter diesen Gegebenheiten ist man im allgemeinen bestrebt, solche Modifikationen zu finden, mit denen man nicht nur die gesteckten Ziele erreicht, sondern auch andere erwünschte Ziele möglichst wenig zurücksetzen muß.
- In diesem Rahmen liegt auch die Aufgabenstellung der vorliegenden Erfindung: Eine neue Art von Zirkon enthaltenden Verbindungen (1) aufzuzeigen, mit denen man gegenüber bekannten Zirkon enthaltenden Verbindungen (1) - unter vergleichbarer Zielsetzung - bessere Ergebnisse erreichen kann.
- Insbesondere war es eine Aufgabenstellung zur vorliegenden Erfindung, eine neue Art von Zirkon enthaltenden Verbindungen (1) aufzuzeigen, die einerseits kein Halogen in das Polymerisat einbringt und andererseits erlaubt, durch einfache Maßnahmen das Molekulargewicht der Polymerisate über sehr weite Bereiche zu steuern.
- Es wurde gefunden, daß die gestellte Aufgabe gelöst werden kann, wenn bei dem eingangs definierten Verfahren eingesetzt werden als Zirkon enthaltende Verbindung (1) spezielle Cyclopentadienylzirkonverbindungen, als Aluminium enthaltende Verbindung (2) Aluminiumtrialkyle sowie (3) - gegebenenfalls - als eine weitere Komponente Wasser.
- Gegenstand der vorliegenden Erfindung ist dementsprechend ein Verfahren zum Herstellen von Polyäthylen durch Polymerisation von Athylen bei Temperaturen im Bereich von -80 bis 120, insbesondere 0 bis 1000C mittels eines Ziegler-Katalysatorsystems aus (1) einer Zirkon enthaltenden Verbindung sowie (2) einer Aluminium enthaltenden Verbindung.
- Das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß eingesetzt wird ein Katalysatorsystem aus (1) einer Zirkon enthaltenden Verbindung der allgemeinen Formel (Cyclopentadienyl) n ZrY4 worin stehen n für eine Zahl im Bereich von 1 bis 4, Y für R oder oder oder und R für eine Alkyl- oder Metalloalkylgruppe, (2) einem Aluminiumtrialkyl mit bis zu 4 Kohlenstoffatomen pro Alkylgruppe sowie (3) - gegebenenfalls - Wasser mit den Maßgaben (I), daß das Molverhältnis (1) : (2) im Bereich von 1 : 0,001 bis 1 : 20, insbesondere 1 : 0,001 bis 1 : 5 liegt, (II), daß die Komponenten (1) und (2) vor dem Einsatz zur Polymerisation zusammengefügt und solange belassen werden, bis die mit dem Zusammenfügen beginnende Gasentwickwicklung abgeklungen ist, und (III), daß das Molverhältnis (2) : (3) ->1 ist.
- Ein Vorteil des erfindungsgemäßen Verfahrens ist, daß mit der eingesetzten Zirkon enthaltenden Verbindung (1) kein Halogen in die Polymerisate eingebracht wird. Ein weiterer Vorteil des neuen Verfahren ist, daß es erlaubt, über die relative Menge des - gegebenenfalls - mit eingesetzten Wassers das Molekulargewicht der Polymerisate zu regeln, wobei steigende relative Mengen an Wasser zu sinkenden Molekulargewichten und zugleich zu steigenden Reaktionsgeschwindigkeiten führen et vice versa. Diesem Vorteil noch dominierend überlagert ist, daß bei dem erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren das Molekulargewicht der entstehenden Polymerisate nicht nur über sehr weite Bereiche, sondern auch in einfachster Weise durch die Wahl der Polymerisationstemperatur eingestellt werden kann: Steigende Polymerisationstemperaturen führen zu sinkenden Molekulargewichten, sinkende Polymerisationstemperaturen zu steigenden Molekulargewichten. Dieser Effekt geht so weit, daß nach dem neuen Verfahren - bei relativ hohen Temperaturen -flüssige Oligomere bis - bei relativ niederen Polymerisationstemperaturen - hochmolekulare Kunststoffe entstehen.
- Zu dem erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren ist im übrigen zu bemerken, daß seine Besonderheit im eigentlichen in der eingesetzten neuen Zirkon enthaltenden Katalysatorkomponente (1) sowie -im gegebenen Fall - der Mitverwendung des Wassers (3) liegt.
- Unter Beachtung dieser Besonderheit kann das Verfahren ansonsten in praktisch allen einschlägig üblichen technologischen Ausgestaltungen durchgeführt werden, etwa als diskontinuierliches, taktweises oder kontinuierliches Verfahren, sei es z.B. als Suspensions-Polymerisationsverfahren, Lösungs-Polymerisationsverfahren oder Trockenphasen-Polymerisationsverfahren; - wobei es allerdings im letztgenannten Fall die größten Vorteile bringt. Die erwähnten technologischen Ausgestaltungen - mit anderen Worten: die technologischen Varianten der Polymerisation von Olefinen nach Ziegler - sind aus der Literatur und Praxis wohlbekannt, so daß sich nähere Ausführungen zu ihnen erübrigen. Zu bemerken ist allenfalls noch, daß bei dem neuen Verfahren der bei der Polymerisation herrschende Druck des monomeren Ethylens an sich nicht kritisch ist, aber aus ökonomischen Gründen im allgemeinen zweckmäßigerweise im Bereich von 1 bis 10 bar liegen sollte.
- Das Zusammenstellen des erfindungsgemäß einzusetzenden Katalysatorsystems erfolgt derart, daß die Komponenten (1) und (2) vor dem Einsatz zur Polymerisation zusammengefügt und so lange belassen werden5 bis die mit dem Zusammenfügen beginnende Gasentwicklung abgeklungen ist. Das dabei resultierende Produkt kann dann unmittelbar zur Polymerisation eingesetzt werden.
- Im gegebenen Fall kann es jedoch von Vorteil sein, das Produkt vor dem Einsatz zur Polymerisation relativ kurze Zeit gemeinsam mit dem für das Katalysatorsystem bestimmtem Wasser reifen zu lassen.
- Was die stoffliche Seite des neuen Katalysatorsystems betrifft, ist noch das Folgende zu bemerken: Bei der Zirkon enthaltenden Verbindung (1) mit der angegebenen allgemeinen Formel ist es an sich nicht kritisch, wieviel Kohlenstoffatome der Rest R enthält, jedoch ist es aus ökonomischen Gründen zweckmäßig, wenn R ein üblicher Alkyl- bzw. Metalloalkylrest ist, der nicht mehr als 100, insbesondere nicht mehr als 18 Kohlenstoffatome enthalten sollte. Wie sich gezeigt hat, sind für den erfindungsgemäßen Zweck besonders gut geeignet Tetracyclopentadienylzirkon sowie Tricyclopentadienylzirkon-(bis-diäthylalumino)-äthan.
- Als Aluminium enthaltende Verbindung eignen sich die bei Ziegler-Katalysatorsystemen üblichen Aluminiumtrialkyle, z.B.
- Aluminiumtrimethyl, Aluminiumtriäthyl, Aluminiumtriisobutyl.
- Beispiele 1 bis 5 35,1 g Tetracyclopentadienylzirkon (0,1 Mol) wurden unter Inertgas mit 95 ml Triäthylaluminium (0,7 Mol) versetzt und unter Rühren auf 600C erhitzt, bis die Athanentwicklung abgeklungen war. (Die Reaktionszeit von ca. einer Woche verlängert sich bei niedrigeren Reaktionstemperaturen.) Das entstandene dunkelrote Öl wurde zur besseren Handhabung mit vorgereinigtem n-Heptan auf 300 ml aufgefüllt und wie nachstehend beschrieben zur Polymerisation eingesetzt.
- In einem stopfbuchslosen 1 l-RUhrautoklaven wurden nach sorgfältigem Evakuieren und Ausheizen 300 ml vorgereinigtes Benzol mit der in der Tabelle angegebenenen Menge des Katalysator-Öles auf Zirkonbasis versetzt und auf die in der Tabelle angegebene Temperatur thermostatisiert. Anschließend wurde Athylen (polymerisation grade) mit 9 bar aufgepresst. Nach der in der Tabelle angegebenen Zeit wurde das entstandene Polyäthylen abfiltriert und getrocknet.

Das entstandene dunkelrote Öl wurde zur besseren Handhabung auf 30 ml mit vorgereinigtem n-Heptan aufgefüllt.
- Die Polymerisation erfolgt so wie in Beispiel 3 beschrieben.
Claims (1)
- Patentanspruch Verfahren zum Herstellen von Polyäthylen durch Polymerisation von Äthylen bei Temperaturen im Bereich von -80 bis 1200C mittels eines Ziegler-Katalysatorsystems aus (1) einer Zirkon enthaltenden Verbindung sowie (2) einer Aluminium enthaltenden Verbindung, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß eingesetzt wird ein Katalysatorsystem aus (1) einer Zirkon enthaltenden Verbindung der allgemeinen Formel (Cyclopentadienyl)n ZrYI n worin stehen n für eine Zahl im Bereich von 1 bis 4, Y für R, oder oder oder und R für eine Alkyl- oder Metalloalkylgruppe, (2) einem Aluminiumtrialkyl mit bis zu 4 Kohlenstoffatomen pro Alkylgruppe, sowie (3) - gegebenenfalls - Wasser mit den Maßgaben (I), daß das Molverhältnis (1) : (2) im Bereich von 1 : 0,001 bis 1 : 20 liegt, (II), daß die Komponenten (1) und (2) vor dem Einsatz zur Polymerisation zusammengefügt und solange belassen werden, bis die mit dem Zusammenfügen beginnende Gasentwicklung abgeklungen ist, und (III), daß das Molverhältnis (2) : (3) >1 ist.
