Description
Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zum Herstellen von Polyätherimiden durch Polykondensieren einer
Mischung, die als wesentliche Bestandteile ein aromatisches Bis(ätheranhydrid) der Formel

wobei in den obigen Formdn R und R1 zweiwertige aromatische Reste mit 6 bis 30 Kohlenstoffatomen
bedeuten.
bisher wurden Polyimide >m allgemeinen aus einer als Zwischenprodukt anfallenden Polyamidsäure hergestellt
(vgl. das im Hochmolek.ilarbericht 1970 veröffentlichte Referat aus »Vysokomol. Soed.« 12 (1970), Serie A,
Nr. 2, Seiten 323 bis 328, und den Artikel »Aromatic Polyimides« in Journal of Polymer Science: Part A, Band 1,
Seiten 3135 bis 3150 (1963)). Es war ein dipolares aprotisches Lösungsmittel erforderlich, um eine solche
Polyamidsäure herzustellen, bevor diese in den Polyimidzustand überführt werden konnte. Anders als Polyamide
sind Polyimide nicht leicht handhabbar, und sie zersetzen sich, bevor sie geschmolzen werden können. Bestenfalls
kann die leichter verarbsitbare Polyamidsäure zu einem Film oder Überzug geformt werden. Die Entfernung
des Lösungsmittels verursacht jedoch eine Luftverunreinigung. Darüber hinaus sind zusätzliche Verarbeitungsstufen
erforderlich, bevor das Endprodukt erhalten wird.
In dem in »Chemical Ab !tracts« 1970, Band 73, Nr. 2, veröffentlichten Referat der SU-PS 2 57 010 ist
ausgeführt, daß Polyimide d irch Polykondensation von aromatischen Tetracarbonsäuredianhydriden mit aromatischen
Diaminen erhalten werden.
In dem Referat von »Vysokomol. Soed.« 13 (1971), Serie A, Nr. 9, Seiten 2006 bis 2010, in dem Hochmolekularbericht
von 1972 wird die Kinetik der Synthese aromatischer Polyimide aus den entsprechenden Polyamidsäuren
in fester Phase beschrieben.
Bei dem in der DE-OS 17 70 796 beschriebenen Verfahren erfolgt die Herstellung von Polyimiden durch
Umsetzen von Dicarbonsäurediaciden mit Tetracarbonsäuredianhydriden.
Auf den Seiten 2 und 3 des Artikels »Polyimides« von N. A. Adrova et ai des Israel Program for Scientific
Translation, Jerusalem 1969, wird die Herstellung von aliphatischen Polyimiden durch Schmelzen eines aliphatischen
Diamins mit einer aromatischen Tetracarbonsäure bzw. einem Teilester davon beschrieben. Nach Seite 2,
letzter Absatz dieser Druckschrift, ist die Technik der Polykondensation in der Schmelze von nur begrenzter
Anwendbarkeit bei der Herstellung von Polyimiden. Selbst für aliphatische Diamine besteht, wie auf Seite 3,
Absatz 1, ausgeführt sind, die Forderung, daß die Schmelzpolykondensation nur dann erfolgreich ausgeführt
werden kann, wenn dieses Amin nicht weniger als 7 Methylengruppen enihälL Hinsichtlich aromatischer Diamine
ist darauf hingewiesen, daß sie nicht basisch genug sind, um Salze mit Carbonsäuren zu bilden, wie es nach dt;·
auf Seite 2, unten, gezeigten Reaktionsgleichung erforderlich ist und daß aromatische Polyimide in der Regel
unschmelzbar sind, so daß sich das Reaktionsprodukt verfestige, bevor ein ausreichend hohes Molekulargewicht
erzielt werden sein.
In der DE-OS 15 95 686 ist ein Verfahren zum Herstellen von Polyimiden aus aromatischen Tetracarbonsäurederivaten
und aromatischen Diaminen beschrieben, das nach dem Patentanspruch dadurch gekennzeichnet ist,
daß als aromatische Diamine bestimmte aromatische Polyäthe "diamine eingesetzt werden. In der gesamten OS
ist nirgends irgendeine Anregung dahingehend enthalten, daß die Umsetzung in der Schmelze stattfinden könne.
Zwar soll nach Seite 5, unten, auch ohne Lösungsmittel gearbeitet werden können, doch gibt es kein einziges
Beispiel, bei dem ohne Lösungsmittel gearbeitet wird.
Der Erfindung liegt die Aufgabe zugrunde, das eingangs genannte Verfahren in Abwesenheit organischer
Lösungsmitte! anzuführen.
Diese Aufgabe wird crfindungsgernäß dadurch gelöst, daß die Polykondensation in. einer Schmelze ausgeführt
und das Reaktionswasser bei einer Temperatur bis zu 350° C entfernt wird.
Beispiele für Reste, die für R stehen können, sind aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffreste sowie deren halogenierte
Derivate, wie Phenylen, Tolylen, Chlorphenylen, Naphthylen usw, sowie Reste der folgenden Gruppierung

Zusätzlich zu den obigen Formeln (3) bis (5) fallen auch solche aromatischen Bis(ätheranhydride) in den
65 Rahmen der Formel (1), wie sie in der UdSSR-Patentschrift 2 57 010 sowie in d .τη Artikel von M. M. Koton und
F. S. Florinski im russischen Journal für organische Chemie, Band 4, Heft 5, Seite 774 (! 968), beschrieben sind.
Einige der aromatischen Bis(ätheranhydride)der Formel (1) können hergestellt werden durch Hydrolyse eines
nitro-substituierten Phenyldinitrils mit einem Metallsalz einer zweiwertigen Phenolverbindung in Gegenwart
eines dipohiren aprotischen Lösungsmittels mit nachfolgender Dehydratation des Reaktionsproduktes. So kann

verschiedene Verfahren bekannt, um die dabei erhaltenen Tetranitrile in die entsprechenden Tetrasäuren und
Dianhydride umzuwandeln. Beispiele für die obengenannten Alkalimetallsalze zweiwertiger Phenole sind die

Erfindung auch aromatische Bis(ätheranhydride) eingesetzt werden, die abgeleitet sind von Alkalimetallsalzen 40

Bei der Durchführung des erfindungsgemäßen Verfahrens wird eine Mischung des aromatischen Bis(ätheran- .:■':!
hydiids) und des organischen Diamins unter einer inerten Atmosphäre, wie einer Stickstoffatmosphäre, erhitzt, ?;;]
um eine homogene Schmelze ?.u bilden und das Wasser in dem Maße zu entfernen, wie es gebildet wird. jj
Die Temperatur der Schmelze wird oberhalb der Glasübergangstemperatur des erhaltenen Polyätherimids, 2$
jedoch höchstens bei einer Temperatur von 3500C gehalten. Vorzugsweise wird die Schmelzpolymerisation bei H
einer Temperatur im Bereich von 250 bis 3000C durchgeführt. Die Polymerisation wird erleichtert, wenn man |j
durch die Schmelze ein inertes Gas, wie Stickstoff, leitet. Es wurde als zweckmäßig festgestellt, gegen Ende der ρ
Polymerisation unter verringertem Druck zu arbeiten, um die Entfernung des Wassers zu erleichtern. Die ψ
Mischung kann gerührt werden. Der Fortgang der Umsetzung kann leicht durch die Änderung der Schmelzvis- |j
ίο kosität der Mischung verfolgt v/erden. M
Es wurde festgestellt, daß im wesentlichen äquimolarc Mengen des organischen Diamins und des aromati- λ
sehen Bis(ätheranhydrids) optimale Ergebnisse liefern. Brauchbare Ergebnisse können unter Verwendung von j'j
0,5 bis 2 Mol des organischen Diamins pro Mol des aromatischen Bis(ätheranhydrids) erhalten werden. Mono- 1
funktionell organische Amine, wie Anilin, oder organische Anhydride, wie Phthalsäureanhydrid, sind zur : : :
!5 Steuerung des Molekulargewichtes geeignet.
Polyätherimide mit 2 bis 500 und vorzugsweise 10 bis 50 im Durchschnitt wiederkehrenden Einheiten können -j
hergestellt werden. Diese Polymeren können mit verschiedenen Füllstoffen, wie Siliciumdioxid-Füllstoffen, !
Glasfasern, Kohlenstoffäden, Perlit usw., vermischt werden. Die erhaltenen gefüllten Zusammensetzungen kön- i
nen einen Anteil von etwa i bis 70 Teilen Füllstoff pro iööTeiie des Poiyätherimids enthalten. Das Vermischen ";
des Füllstoffes mit dem Polyätherimid kann durch Zugabe des Füllstoffes vor dem Schmelzen oder direkt zur
Schmelze erfolgen. Es kann mit Standardrührern gerührt werden, um das Vermischen der Bestandteile zu
erleichtern.
Nachfolgend wird die Erfindung anhand von Beispielen näher erläutert. In den Beispielen sind alle angegebe- ι
nen Teile Gewichtsteile.

Beispie I 1 '
Eine Mischung aus 2,2-Bis[4(2,3-dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]propan-dianhydrid (3,0 Teile) und 4,4'-Methylendianilin
(1,1418 Teile) wurde 1Z2 Stunde unter Stickstoff und IV4 Stunden im Vakuum auf 2900C erhitzt. Die
Ausbeute an Folymeren betrug 2,0 Teile. Die grundmolare Viskositätszahl des Polymeren in Dimethylformamid
uetrugO,46dl/gbei25°C.
Durch die Elementaranalyse erhielt man folgende Werte: >\

Errechnet wurden auf der Basis der Formel (GuFhoNjOe),! i

Es wurde folgendes IR-Spektrum gemessen: Am3X 1770, 1714, 1352, 1274 und 1239 cm-'. Nach dem Herstel
lungsverfahren, der Elementaranalyse und den spektralanalytischen Werten war das erhaltene Produkt ein
Polyätherimid.
Das obige Polyätherimid wurde bei 275° C und einem Druck von etwa 350 bis etwa 700 kg/cm2 zu einem
fertigen Teil gepreßt. Das Formteil war eine genaue Reproduktion der Form.
Eine Mischung aus 2,2-Bis[4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)-phenyl]propan-dianhydrid (3,0Teile) und 4,4'-Diaminodiphenyläther (1,152 Teile) wurde unter Rühren und Stickstoff 1 Stunde und I1A Stunden im Vakuum auf 300°C
erhitzt Die Ausbeute an Polymeren betrug 2,68 Teile. Die grundmolare Viskositätszahl in Dimethylacetamid bei
25°C war 1,00 dl/g. Von einem klaren flexiblen Film der aus einer Chloroformlösung gegossen war, wurden
durch IR-Spektrographie die folgenden /?mal-Werte gemessen: 1767,1712,1372,1275,1244 und 1217 cm-'. Die
thermische Zersetzungstemperatur des Polymeren wurde durch thermo-gravimetrische Analyse zu 510°C in
Stickstoff und 410°C in Luft bestimmt
Eine Mischung aus 2£-Bis[4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]propan-dianhydrid (3,0 Teile) und 4,4'-Methylendianlinin (1,1418 Teile) wurde für V2 Stunde unter Stickstoff IV4 Stunde im Vakuum auf 290°C erhitzt Die
Ausbeute an bernsteinfarbenem glasigem Polymeren betrug 4,0 Teile. Die grundmolare ViskositätszrJil des
Polymeren in Dimethylformamid bei 25° C betrug 0,65 dl/g. Durch thermisch-gravimetrische Analyse wurde die
thermische Zersetzungstemperatur des Polymeren zu 450° C in Stickstoff und 420° C in Luft bestimmt Aus einer
Lösung in Chloroform wurde ein fester flexibler Film gegossen. Nach dem Herstellungsverfahren war das
Polymere ein Polyätherimid.
fine Mischung aus 2^-Bis[4-(23-dicarboxyphenoxy)-phenyl]propan-dianhydrid (6,0 Teile), Phthalsäureanhydrid
(0,1706 Teile) und 4,4'-Diaminodiphenyläther (2,4236 Teile) wurde 1 Stunde unter Stickstoff auf 270° C
erhitzt Die Ausbeute an Polymeren betrug 7,49 Teile. Die grundmolare Viskositätszahl in Dimethylformamid bei
250C betrug 0,34 dl/g. Das Zahlenmittel des Molekulargewichtes betrug 10300 und das Gewichtsmittei des
Molekulargewichtes 25 400.
Eine Mischung aus 4,4'-Diaminodiphenyläther (1,2152 Teile) und 4,4'-Bis(2,3-dicarboxyphenoxy)diphenyläther-dianhydrid
(3,0 Teile) wurde unter Rühren und Stickstoff auf 29O0C erhitzt. Die Ausbeute an zähem
glasigem Polymeren betrug 2,8 Teile. Die grundmolare Viskositätszahl des Polymeren in Chloroform bei 25°C
betrug 0,53 dl/g.
Durch Elementaranalyse wurden folgende Werte ermittelt:
C 72,4 H 3,4
Auf der Basis der Formel (C40H24N2O8)/, wurde errechnet:

Durch thermo-gravimetrische Analyse wurde die thermische Zersetzungstemperatur in Luft zu 480"C bestimmt.
Eine Mischung aus l,4-Bis(2,3-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzol-dianhydrid (2,5 Teile) und 4,4'-Methylendianilin
(1,2320 Teile) wurde unter Rühren und Stickstoff 1 Stunde auf 290° C erhitzt. Die Ausbeute an Polymeren betrug
2,67 Teile. Die grundmolare Viskositätszahl in m-Cresol betrug 0,45 dl/g bei 25° C.
Durch Elementaranalyse wurden ermittelt:
C 74,6 H 2,8.
Für die Formel (C22H 10N2Oe)n wurden errechnet:

C 73,6 H 2,9.
Von einem festen flexiblen Film, der aus m-Cresol gegossen worden war, wurde folgendes IR-Spektrum
aufgenommen:^« 1772, 1715, 1378, 1249 und 1885cm-'. Durch thermo-gravimetrische Analyse wurde die
thermische Zersetzungstemperatur in Stickstoff zu 480° C und in Luft zu 480° C bestimmt.
Eine Mischung aus 2,2-Bis[4-(2,3-dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]propan-dianhydrid (5,1985 Teile) und 4,4'-Methy-
iendianiiin (2,öTeiie) wurde unter Stickstoff i Stunde auf 270" C erhitzt. Die Ausbeute an Polymeren beirug 6,09
Teile. Die grundmolare Viskositätszahl des Polymeren in Dimethylformamid bei 250C war 0,46 dl/g.
Die Elementaranalyse ergab:
C 77,8 H 44 N 4,1.
Aufgrund der Formel (CmH3ON2O6),, wurden errechnet:
C 77,4 H 4,4 N 4,1.
Eine Mischung aus 2,2-Bis[4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyi]-propan-dianhydrid (50,0 Teile) und 4,4'-Methylendianilin (18,6722 Teile) wurde unter Stickstoff und Rühren IV2 Stunden auf 270° C erhitzt Die grundmolare
Viskositätszahl des Polymeren in Dimethylformamid bei 25° C betrug 0,52 dl/g. Das Polymere wurde mit einem
Schneckenextruder bei 275°C extrudiert Aus dem extrudierten Material wurden Preßteile hergestellt Die
Preßteile hatten eine Zugfestigkeit von etwa 794 kg/cm2 und eine Dehnung von 6,7%.
Eine Mischung aus 2£-Bis[4-(2^-dicarboxyphenoxy)-phenyl]propan-dianhydrid (1,5 Teile) und 2,2-Bis-[4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)-phenyfjpropan-dianhydrid (1,5 Teile) und 4,4'-Methylendianilin (1,1418 Teile) wurde
unter Rühren und Stickstoff 45 Minuten und im Vakuum 15 Minuten auf 29O0C erhitzt Die Ausbeute an
Polymerem betrug 3,2 Teile. Die grundmolare Viskositätszahl in Chloroform bei 25° C war 137 dl/g. Das
IR-Spektruin ergab:^ 1768,1700,1360,1250,1078 cm-1.
Eine Mischung aus 2£-Bis[4-{23-dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]propan-dianhydrid (8,099 Teile) und 2,4-Toluylendiamin (13628 TeUe) wurde 15 Minuten unter Stickrtoff auf ?40°C erhitzt Weiter erhitzte man die Schmelze V2
Stunde unter Vakuum auf 275SC Die Poiymerschmeize wurde abgekühlt und in etwa 100 Teilen Chloroform
gelöst Die Lösung wurde in Methanol gegossen und ergab 8,8 Teile Polymeres.
Claims (5)
1. Verfahren zum Herstellen eines Polyätherimids durch Polykondensieren einer Mischung, die als wesentliche
Bestandteile ein aromatisches Bis(ätheranhydrid) der Formel
O —R
(D
und organische Diamine der Formel H2NR1NH2
(2)
enthält,
wobei in den obigen Formeln R und R1 zweiwertige aromatische Reste mit 6 bis 30 Kohlenstoffatomen
bedeuten, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Polykondensation in einer Schmelze ausgeführt und
das Reaktionswasser bei einer Temperatur bis zu 350° C entfernt wird.
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch I1 dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Schmelze mindestens zwei verschiedene
aromatische Bis(ätheranhydride) enthält
3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß zur Erleichterung der Entfernung des Reaktionswassers
ein inertes Gas verwendet wird.
4. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß zur Erleichterung der Entfernung des Reaktionswassers
ein Vakuum angewendet wird.
5. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Schmelze ein Füllstoff hinzugefügt wird.
