Die Erfindung betrifft die Verwendung von Phosphonaten oder Phosphinaten zum Stabilisieren von
organischen Stoffen, die oxydationsempfindlich sind, wie natürliche und künstliche Harze, insbesondere
Olefinpolymere, ferner synthetische Schmiermittel, Kohlenwasserstoffe, natürlicher und synthetischer
Kautschuk- oder öle tierischen oder pflanzlichen Ursprungs.
Es wurde gefunden, daß die erfindungsgemäß zu verwendenden Stabilisatoren überraschenderweise in
verschiedenen organischen Materialien, die normalerweise einer oxydativen Zersetzung unterliegen, sehr
gut wirksam sind. Bei den neuen, erfindungsgemäß zu verwendenden Verbindungen handelt es sich um substituierte
Phosphonate und Phosphinate der Formel I

worin R eine Hydroxyl-, eine Phenyl-, eine Phenoxy-, eine Alkylphenoxygruppe mit vorzugsweise 7 bis
24 Kohlenstoffatomen, eine Alkylthio- oder eine Alkyloxygruppe mit vorzugsweise 13 bis 24 Kohlenstoffatomen
bedeutet; Ri bedeutet dasselbe wie das vorerwähnte R, mit Ausnahme der Phenyl- und der
Hydroxylgruppe; R2 und R3 bedeuten unabhängig voneinander Alkyl ζ. B. mit 1 bis 18 Kohlenstoffatomen,
vorzugsweise mit 1 bis 6 Kohlenstoffatomen, insbesondere aber die tert.-Butylgruppe; R4 bedeutet
Wasserstoff oder eine niedere Alkylgruppe, vorzugsweise mit 1 bis 6 Kohlenstoffatomen, und η bedeutet
die Zahlen 0, 1, 2 oder 3, vorzugsweise aber 0 oder 1.
Von den Verbindungen der Formel I sind jene mit der Hydroxylgruppe in o- oder p-Stellung zur
kohlenstoffsubstituierten Phosphorgruppe bevorzugt.
Bis heute war die Verwendung der erfindungsgemäßen Verbindungen zum Stabilisieren von Polymeren,
wie beispielsweise Polypropylen, nicht bekannt. Ferner wurde gefunden, daß auch andere
organische Stoffe durch Einverleiben einer wirksamen Menge von mindestens einer der erfindungsgemäß
substituierten Phosphonate oder Phosphinate gegen oxydative Zersetzung geschützt werden. Polypropylen
z. B. wird vorteilhaft mit etwa 0,001 bis etwa 5 Gewichtsprozent der erfindungsgemäß substituierten
Phosphonate oder Phosphinate stabilisiert.
Demgemäß ist es Gegenstand der Erfindung, organische Stoffe, vorzugsweise Polymere, insbesondere
Polypropylen, oder synthetische Schmier-Antioxydationsmittel
für organische Stoffe

mittel, ferner auch Polyhalogenolefine, wie Polyvinylchlorid, oder Polyolefine, wie Polyäthylen, zu stabilisieren.
Vorzugsweise handelt es sich um Polyolefine mit hohem Molekulargewicht, beispielsweise von der
Größenordnung von 1000 bis 100 000. Die Polyäthylene und Polypropylene können von hoher,
mittlerer oder niederer Dichte sein. Das zum erfindungsgemäßen Stabilisieren am besten geeignete
Polymere ist aber Polypropylen.
Polymere Stoffe, wie die vorerwähnten, finden z. B. als thermoplastisches Material Verwendung. Überdies
sind diese Stoffe wegen ihrer hohen dielektrischen Konstante Und ihrer Beständigkeit gegen Wasser
besonders wertvolle Isolatoren und Dielektrika für Kondensatoren. Es ist bekannt, daß diese Polyolefine,
ζ. B. Polyäthylen und Polypropylen, von Sauerstoff angegriffen werden, besonders wenn sie
der Witterung und erhöhter Temperatur ausgesetzt sind. Während des Gebrauchs oder der Herstellung
z. B. können die gewünschten Eigenschaften der Polyolefine durch die oxydative Zersetzung herabgesetzt
werden. Eine Folge dieser Zersetzung sind z. B. Verschlechterung der dielektrischen Eigenschaften,
Verfärbung, Brüchigkeit, Vergilbungi Gemäß vorliegender Erfindung kann solches Material
stabilisiert werden.
Nicht nur homopolymere Stoffe, sondern auch copolymere und physikalische Mischungen derselben,

wie ζ. B. hochschlagfestes Polystyrol, das Copolymere
von Butadien und Styrol enthält, können gemäß der vorliegenden Erfindung stabilisiert werden.
Das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren ist auch besonders brauchbar zum Stabilisieren der- verschiedensten
Arten an Schmierölen, enthaltend aliphatische Ester, Polyalkylenoxyde, Silikone, Ester von Phosphor-
und Siliziumsäuren, hochfluorierte substituierte Kohlenwasserstoffe. Solche besonders gut stabilisierbare
Stoffe sind aliphatische Ester, wie Dihexylazelat, Di-(2-äthylhexyl)-azelat, Di-(3,5,5-trimethylhexyl)-glutarat,
Di-(3,5,5-trimethylpentyl)-glutarat, Di-(2-äthylhexyl)-pimelat, Di-(2-äthylhexyl)-adipat,
Diisoamyladipat, Triamyltricarballylat, Pentaerythritol - tetracaproat, Dipropylenglykoldipelargonat,
l,5-Pentandiol-di-(2-äthylhexanoat). Andere spezifische Schmieröle enthalten beispielsweise Polyisopropylenoxyd,
Polyisopropylenoxyddiäther, Polyisopropylenoxyddiester als auch Methylsilikone, Methylphenylsilikone,
Tetraisooktylsilikate und fluorierte öle z. B. Perfluorkohlenwasserstoffe. *
Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft auch die Stabilisierung
von fetthaltigen Stoffen, unter anderem von ölen tierischen oder pflanzlichen Ursprungs, welche
zur Zersetzung beim Stehen oder durch die Einwirkung von Luftsauerstoff neigen. In den Bereich
der Erfindung fallen auch gesättigte und ungesättigte Kohlenwasserstoffe, die beim Lagern oder bei Gebrauch
zur Zersetzung neigen, wie z. B. Benzine, Düsentreibstoffe, Dieselöle, Mineralöle. Diese Kohlenwasserstoffe
werden vor Verharzung, Verfärbung und anderen Zersetzungserscheinungen mit Hilfe der
erfindungsgemäßen substituierten Phosphonate und/ oder Phosphinate geschützt.
Besonders bevorzugte erfindungsgemäße Stabilisatoren sind Di - η - dodecyl - 3,5 - di - tert. - butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl-äthyl-phosphonat,
S,S-Di-n-oktadecyl - 3,5 - di - tert. - butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl - dithiophosphonat
und Di-n-oktadecyl-S^-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl-phosphonat.
Diese finden speziell Verwendung beim Stabilisieren von olefinischen Stoffen z. B. Polypropylen,
synthetischen Schmierölen, wie z. B. Trimethylolpropanestern der Essigsäure, n-Valeriansäure, Hexansäure,
Caprylsäure, Pelargonsäure, 2-Äthylhexansäure, 2-Äthylpropansäure und 2-Methylpentansäure
und deren Mischungen.
Die erfindungsgemäß substituierten Phosphonat- und Phosphinatstabilisatoren sind auch wirksam zum
Stabilisieren von Kautschuk, und zwar sowohl von künstlichem wie auch von natürlichem Kautschuk.
Beispielsweise können Polybutadienkautschuk, PoIyisoprenkautschuk,
Styrolbutadienkautschuk, Butylkautschuk, Nitrilkautschuk. und Neoprenkautschuk
stabilisiert werden.
Die beanspruchten Antioxydantien dürfen in Lebens-, Futter- oder Heilmitteln nicht verwendet
werden,
Die erfindungsgemäß anzuwendenden Stabilisatoren sind nicht unbedingt gleichwertig, sondern ihre
Auswahl ist von verschiedenen Faktoren abhängig. Die Zugänglichkeit und die Kosten der Rohprodukte
für die Herstellung des Stabilisators und die tatsächliche Höhe und Dauer der Hemmwirkung desselben
fallen unter die Faktoren, welche die Wahl eines spezifischen Stabilisators für einen spezifischen
Stoff, welcher normalerweise einem Zerfall unterliegt, bestimmen. Ebenfalls wichtige Faktoren sind Toxizität,
Farbe, Licht- und/oder Hitzebeständigkeit und Löslichkeit.
Gewöhnlich werden die erfindungsgemäß anzuwendenden Stabilisatoren in Konzentrationen von

Die Konzentrationen variieren je nach dem zu stabilisierenden Stoff und dem spezifischen Stabilisator
wie oben erwähnt. Wenn Mischungen von zwei und mehr Stabilisatoren verwendet werden, übersteigt
gewöhnlich die Gesamtmenge der zugesetzten Stabilisatoren 10% des stabilisierten Materials nicht.
Die erfindungsgemäß verwendbaren, substituierten Phosphonat- und Phosphinatstabilisatoren können
auch zum Stabilisieren von organischem Material in Verbindung mit anderen Zusatzstoffen, wie z. B.
Antioxydantien-, Verflüssigungs-, Antikorrosions-und Rostschutzmitteln, Dispergiermitteln, Komplexbildnern,
Emulgier- und Antischaummitteln, Ruß, Beschleunigern, Weichmachern, Farbstabilisatoren,
Hitzestabilisatoren, UV-Absorptionsmitteln, Farbstoffen, Pigmenten, Füllmassen, verwendet werden.

Darin bedeuten Teile, sofern nichts anderes ausdrücklich vermerkt ist, Gewichtsteile. Die Temperaturen
sind in Celsiusgraden angegeben. Gewichtsteile stehen zu Volumteilen im gleichen Verhältnis
wie Gramm zu Kubikzentimeter.

enthält, bleibt im nachfolgend beschriebenen Prüfverfahren 10 Stunden
stabilisiert, während unstabilisiertes schon nach I1Iz Stunden Zersetzungserscheinungen zeigt.
13 ml Mineralöl gibt man in einen bei Raumtemperatur (25°) und bei Normaldruck mit Sauerstoff
gefüllten Oxydationskolben. Der Kolben wird verschlossen und mit einem Quecksilbermanometer verbunden,
welches die durch Absorption von Sauerstoff im Kolben entstandenen Druckveränderungen anzeigt.
Der Apparat wird "dann auf 150° erhitzt und diese Temperatur so lange eingehalten, bis das
Manometer einen Druckverlust von 300 mm Hg, verglichen mit dem ursprünglichen Druck, bei 150°
anzeigt.
Durch Einverleiben von 0,001 Gewichtsprozent des Stabilisators Di - η - oktadecyl - 3,5 - di - tert. - butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl-phosphonat
in frisch destilliertes Cyclohexen wird ein stabilisiertes ' Cyclohexen erhalten.
Die Wirksamkeit des Stabilisators in Cyclohexen wird durch den Oxydationstest ASTM D 525-49
geprüft, wobei aber nur 10 ml Cyclohexen für jeden Test verwendet wurden. Das stabilisierte Cyclohexen
hat eine Induktionszeit von 75 Minuten, das unstabilisierte eine solche von 30 Minuten.

Durch Di - η - oktadecyl - 3,5 - di - tert. - butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl-phosphonat
wird die Oxydation von Stearinsäure verzögert, wie aus folgender Prüfung hervorgeht, die nach dem modifizierten »Continental
Oil Test« (vgl. Industrial & Engineering Chemistry, Bd. 33, 1941, S. 339) erfolgte, indem Stearinsäure als
Substrat und als Antioxydans Di-n-oktadecyl-3,5-ditert.-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl-phosphonat
in einer Konzentration von 0,05% verwendet wurde.
10 g Stearinsäure ' wurden in einer der obenerwähnten
Vorschrift entsprechenden Vorrichtung ohne mechanische Bewegung mit Sauerstoff behandelt.
Der Sauerstoffverbrauch wird durch den Druckabfall in einem mit der Vorrichtung verbundenen
Hg-Manometer gemessen. Die Zeitdauer, die verstreicht, bis der Druckabfall 60 mm Hg beträgt,
wird als Kriterium für die Beständigkeit der Säure angesehen.
Versuchsbedingungen: Die Stearinsäure wird mit Kupferdraht als Oxydationskatalysator versetzt undbei
einer Temperatur von 115° nach dem obengenannten Test geprüft. Gleichzeitig wird eine Probe
der Stearinsäure, welche zusätzlich noch 0,05% Din - oktadecyl - 3,5 - di - tert. - butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzylphosphonat
als Stabilisierungsmittel enthält, in gleicher Weise geprüft.
Die gemessene" Oxydationsbeständigkeit beträgt ίο ohne Stabilisator 10 Stunden, mit Di-n-oktadecyl-3,5
- di - tert. - butyl - 4- hydr oxybenzyl - phosphonat als Stabilisator 38 Stunden.
.Beispiel 7
Es wird eine Lösung von 4 Gewichtsprozent Kreppkautschuk in Toluol hergestellt, die 2 Gewichtsprozent
Di-n-oktadecyl-3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl-phosphonat, bezogen auf das Gewicht des
Kautschuks, enthält. Diese Lösung wird auf eine saubere Glasplatte gestrichen und das Lösungsmittel
bei 50° abgedampft. Die Platte wird hierauf 3 Stunden in einem Luftumwälzungsofen bei 150° gehalten
und dann herausgenommen. Man beurteilt die Stabilisierung nach der Klebrigkeit des gealterten Kautschuks
im Vergleich zu einer Blindprobe. Die Klebrigkeit wird bei diesem Test wirksam durch
Zusatz von Di-n-oktadecyl-S^-di-tert-butyM-hydroxybenzyl-phosphonat
verhindert.
