Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft Alky!hydroxyphenylthioloacylalkancarbonsäureester
von Mono- und Polymercaptoalkanpar-..
bonsäureestern und Zusammensetzungen, die sonst oxydativen Veränderungen
unterworfen sind, die durch Zufügen von solchen !Dhioloestern stabilisiert werden.
Im besonderen betrifft die vorliegende Erfindung Verbindungen

Der Ausdruck "Alkyl" und "Alkylen" bedeutet eine Gruppe, die
einen verzweigten oder geradkettigen Kohlenwasserstoff mit 1 bis 12 Kohlenstoffatomen enthält. Beispiele solcher Alkylgrup-
^ pen sind somit Methyl, Äthyl, Propyl, Isopropyl, Butyl, tert.-Butyl,
Octyl, Decyl, Dodecyl und ähnliche und die entsprechenden
Alkylengruppen. Wenn der Ausdruck "Alkyl" mit der Bedeutung
"niedrig" versehen ist, so bedeutet dies einen verzweigten oder geradkettigen Kohlenwasserstoff mit 1 bis etwa 6 Kohlenstoffatomen.
Wie man der Formel I entnehmen kann, trägt der Alkanoylteil
dieser Thiolester eine Di-(niedrig)alkyl-p-phenolgruppe. Diese
Phenolgruppe enthält eine (niedere)Alkylgruppe in einer
o-Stellung zu der Hydroxylgruppe und eine zweite (niedere-)Alkyl·
gruppe entweder a) in der anderen o-Stellung zu der Hydroxylgruppe oder b) in der m-Stellung zu der Hydroxylgruppe und in
™ p-Stellung zur ersten (niederen)Alkylgruppe. Bevorzugt sind die
Di-(niedrig)alkyl-p-phenolgruppen> worin die (niederen)Alkylgruppen
verzweigte Gruppen sind, wie tert.-Butyl· Andere Anordnungen
jedoch, wie z.B. eine 3-tert«rButyl-6-methyl-'-p-phenol gruppe, eine 3,5-Diisopropyl-p-phenolgruppe oder eine 3,5-Dime-
; thyl-p-phenolgruppe sind umfaßt;
Die ganze Zahl χ kann einen Wert von 1 bis 6 haben und schließt
bo substituierte Phenylalkanoylgruppen ein, worin die Alkylenkette des AlJcanoyl teils 2 bis 7 Kohlenstoff atome (eingeschlossen die Carbonylgruppe) enthält. Die Alkylenkette kann geradkettig oder verzweigt sein, x.B. kann die substituiert· Phenyl-' gruppe in dem Kohlenstoffatom der Kette, das am weitesten von
der Carbonylgruppe entfernt ist, oder rih einen der dazwischen-

liegenden Kohlenstoffatome der Kette sitzen. Bevorzugte Verbindungen
sind die, worin χ einen Wert von 2 hat, z.B. die 3-(Dialkyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-propionylgruppe.
Eine geeignete Methode zur Herstellung der Verbindungen der vorliegenden Erfindung schließt die Behandlung eines Mercaptans
der Formel II

ein, worin A, ρ und y die gleiche Bedeutung haben wie oben, mit einer äquivalenten Menge eines Dialkylhydroxyphenylalkanoylchlorids,
vorzugsweise in Gegenwart eines säurebindenden Mittels, wie Pyridin, und wahlweise in einem inerten Lösungsmittel, wie
Benzol, Xylol, Toluol oder ähnlichen. Es sollte bemerkt werden, daß, wenn ρ 2 ist, 2 Thioloacylalkanoylessigesterreste in dem
Endprodukt enthalten sein werden. Wenn ρ einen Wert von 4 hat, werden entsprechend 4 der besagten Reste in dem Produkt enthalten sein. Typische Beispiele der oben beschriebenen Mercaptanverbindungen
sind: Äthylenglykol-bis-(thioglykolat), Äthylenglykol-bis-dnercaptopropionat), Trimethylolpropan-tris-(thioglykolat),
Trimethylolpropan-tris-(mercaptopropionat), Pentaerythrit-tetrakis-Cthioglykolat), Pentaerythrittetrakis-(mercaptopropionat).
Die Verbindungen der Formel II sind im Handel erhältlich.
Die Alkylhydroxyphenylthioacylalkancarbonsäureester der vorliegenden
Erfindung sind Stabilisierungsmittel für organische Materialien, die sonst der oxydativen Zersetzung unterliegen.
Materialien, die gemäß der vorliegenden Erfindung stabilisiert werden, schließen synthetische organische polymere Substanzen
ein, wie Vinylharze, hergestellt durch die Polymerisation von Vinylhalogeniden oder durch die Copolymerisation von Vinylhalogeniden
mit ungesättigten polymerisierbaren Verbindungen,

wie Vinylester, oi.,ß-ungesättigte Aldehyde und ungesättigte Kohlenwasserstoffe,
wie Butadiene und Styrol; Poly-AL-olefine, wie Polyäthylen, Polypropylen, Polybutylen und Polyisopren, eingeschlossen
Copolymere von Poly-c6-olefinen; Polyurethane, wie
sie aus Polyol und organischen Polyisocyanaten hergestellt werden;
Polyamide, wie Polyhexamethylenadipinsäureamid und PoIycaprolactam;
Polyester, wie Polymethylenterephthalate; Polycarbonate; Polyacetale; Polystyrol; Polyäthylenoxyd; und Copolymere,
wie hochstoßfestes PoIystyrol, das Copolymere von
Butadien und Styrol enthält, und solche, die durch Copolymerisation
von Acrylnitril, Butadien und/oder Styrol erhalten werden, Andere Materialien, die gemäß der vorliegenden Erfindung stabilisiert
werden, schließen Schmieröl vom Typ der aliphatischen Ester, wie Di-(2-äthylhexyl)-azelat, und Pentaerythrittetracaproat;
tierische und pflanzliche Öle, wie Leinöl, Fett, Talg, Specköl, Erdnußöl, Dorschleberöl, Rizinusöl, Palmöl,
Maisöl und Baumwollsamenöl; Kohlenwasserstoffe, wie Benzin,
natürliches und synthetisches Dieselöl, Mineralöl, Brennöl, Trockenöl, Schneidflüssigkeiten, Wachse und Harze, Fettsäuren,
wie Seifen, ein.
Im allgemeinen werden die Stabilisierungsmittel dieser Erfindung von etwa 0,005 bis etwa 10 Gewichts-% der stabilisierten
Zusammensetzung angewandt. Ein besonders bevorzugter Bereich für Polyolefine, wie Polypropylen, liegt zwischen etwa 0,1 %
und etwa 1 %.
Die folgenden Beispiele erläutern das Wesen der vorliegenden Erfindung, ohne sie zu beschränken.

Zu einer Lösung von 5,76 Teilen TrimethyIolpropan-tris~(mercaptopropionat)
in 100 Volumenteilen Pyridin wurden 17.49 Teile 3-(3·,5'-Di-tert.-butyl-4·-hydroxyphenyl)-propionylchlorid

portionsweise über einen Zeitraum von 2 Stunden zugegeben. Die Reaktionsmischung wurde während der Zugabe und während 16 weiterer
Stunden bei Raumtemperatur und dann 1 Stunde bei 50°C gerührt. Nach dem Abkühlen wurde die Reaktionsmischung in 1000
Teile Eiswasser eingegossen und das Produkt durch Extrahieren gewonnen. Der Ätherextrakt wurde mit 3n-Chlorwasserstoffsäu.r
re,Wasser und gesättigter Natriumchloridlösung gewaschen. Nach dem Trocknen wurden 22,10 Teile des Produkts als wachsartiger
Feststoff erhalten. Weitere Reinigung durch Säulenchromatographie lieferte das Produkt als leichten Sirup.

Unter Anwendung des Verfahrens von Beispiel 1 setzte man 4,50 Teile Äthylenglykol-bis-(mercaptopropionat) in 100 Volumenteilen
Pyridin mit 19,56 Teilen 3-(3·,5f-Di-tert,buty1-4'-hydroxyphenyl
)-propiony Ich lorid um und erhielt 21,90 Teile des&rodukts.
Tetrakis- {methylen-3/~3·(3",5"-di-tert.-butyl-4"-hydroxyphenyl>thiolopropionoxy_7-propionat

Entsprechend dem Verfahren von Beispiel 1 setzte man 7,81 Teile Pentaerythrit-tetrakis-imercaptopropionat) in 100 Voiumenteilen .Pyridin mit 20,75 Teilen 3~(3',5'-di-tert.-buty1-4'-hydroxyphenyl )-propiony !chlor id um und erhielt 23,18 Teile des Produkts·

jUnstabilisiertes Polypropylenpulver (Hercules Profax 6501)
wird gut mit 0,25 Gewichts-% Bis-/~methylen-3-(3·,5'-di-tert,-butyl-4'-hydroxyphenyl)-thiopropionoxy
7-propionat vermischt. Das vermengte Material wird dann in einem Zwei-Walzen-Mischer
10 Minuten bei 182 Cgemahlen,und danach wird das stabilisierte
Polypropylen ausgewalzt und abgekühlt.
Das gewalzte Polypropylenblatt wird dann in schmale Stücke geschnitten und 7 Minuten mit einer hydraulischen Presse bei
218°C und unter 140,6 kg/cm (2000 pounds per square inch) Druck gepreßt. Das erhaltene Blatt von 0,635 mm (25 mil) Dicke
wird in einem Druckluftofen bei 150°C auf seine Widerstandsfähigkeit
gegenüber beschleunigtem Altern untersucht. Wie aus der folgenden Tabelle zu entnehmen ist, wird die Zusammensetzung
von 0,25 Gewichts-% eines Stabilisierungsmittels und Polypropylen gegen oxydative Zersetzung stabilisiert.

Das oben beschriebene Verfahren wurde wiederholt mit der Ausnahme,
daß 0,1 Gewichts-% des besagten Stabilisierungsmittels zusammen mit 0,3 Gewichts-% Distearylthiodipropionat, einem
synergistischen Mittel, verwendet wurde. Polypropylen, das die besagte Stabilisierungsmischung enthielt, hatte unter den oben
beschriebenen Bedingungen ein Ofenalter von 145 Stunden.
Polypropylen wurde nach dem Verfahren, wie es in Beispiel 4
beschrieben wurde, mit 0,25 Gewichts-% 1,1,1-Tris-fmethylen«
3»-^"(3···t5··'-di-tert.-butyl-4 '' '-hydroxyphenyl)-thiolopropionoxy 7-propionat(-propan stabilisiert. Die Ofenlebens-

dauer betrug 1300 Stunden,

Gleich gute Stabilisierungsergebnisse wurden erzielt, wenn die besagte Verbindung in Mengen von 0,1, 0,5 und 1,0 Gewichts-%
zu Polyäthylen, Polypropylen, Polybutadien, Polystyrol, Butadien-Styrol-Copolymer,
Polyvinylchlorid und einem Polyamid zugegeben wurde.
Beispiel 5 wurde wiederholt mit der Ausnahme, daß 0,1 Gewichts-%
des besagten Stabilisators zusammen mit 0,3 Gewichts-% Distearylthiodipropionat als synergistisches Mittel verwendet wurde.
Die Ofenlebensdauer von Polypropylen, das mit dieser Mischung stabilisiert worden war, betrug 810 Stunden.
Das Verfahren von Beispiel 4 wurde wiederholt mit der Ausnahme, daß 0,1 Gewichts-% Tetrakis- [ methylen-3-/~3'(3",5"-di-tert,-buty1-4"-hydroxyphenyl)-thiolopropionoxy_7-propionat
j -methan in Verbindung mit 0,3 Gewichts-% Distearylthiodipropionat verwendet
wurde. Die Ofenlebensdauer des stabilisierten Polypropylens betrug 1290 Stunden.
Ähnlich gute Ergebnisse werden erzielt, wenn Polyisopren, Polyurethan,
Polymethylenterephthalat, Polyacetal und Polyäthylenoxyd
stabilisiert werden mit Isopropyl-3-(3"',5'-diäthyl-4'-hydroxy-thiolobenzoat)-propionat,

Eine stabilisierte MineralÖlzusammensetzung wird hergestellt,
indem man zu einem raffinierten Mineralöl von 183 S.U.S. bei 37,8°C (1OO°F) (Regal Oil B, Texas Company) 0,005 Gewichts-%
Tetrakis-£ methylen-3/~3 · (3",5"-di-tert.-butyl-4"-hydroxyphenyl
)-thiolopropionoxy_7-propionati-methan gibt.
^ Stabilisiertes Specköl wird hergestellt durch Einarbeiten von
™ 0,01 Gewichts-% l,l,l-Tris-[ methylen-3!-/~3"-(3' · ·,5f ' '-di-
tert.-butyl-4''hydroxyphenyl)-thiolopropionoxy_7-propionat|-
propan.in Specköl.
Stabilisiertes Baumwollsamenöl wird dadurch hergestellt, daß man 0,01 Gewichts-% dieses Stabilisators in raffiniertes Baumwollsamenöl
einmischt.
Stabilisiertes Benzin wird durch Einarbeiten von 0,05 Gewichts-% Bis-/~methylen-3-(3',5'-di-tert.-butyl-4'-hydroxyphenyl)-thiolopropionqxy_7-propionat
in Benzin, das keine Additive P und Stabilisatoren enthält, hergestellt.
Paraffinwachs (P = 51,7 bis 53,3°C) (125 bis 128°F) wird durch
Einmischen von 0,001 Gewichts-% Tetrakis- [ methylen-3-/~3·-
(3",5"-di-tert.-buty1-4"-hydroxyphenyl)-thiolopropionoxy_7-propionatj-methan stabilisiert.
Ein stabilisiertes Hochtemperaturschmieröl wird durch Einmischen von 2 Gewichts-% Methyl-3-<3·,5'-di-tert.-butyl-4·-
hydroxythiolobenzoat)-propionat in das Schmiermittel, welches Diisoamyladipat enthält, hergestellt.

Hochstoßfestes Polystyrolharz, das ein Elastomer(wie Butadien-Styrol)
enthält, wird gegen den Verlust von Dehnungseigenschaften durch Einarbeiten von 0,5 Gewichts-% n-Dodecyl-3,5-di-tert.-buty1-4-hydroxythiolobenzoatacetat
stabilisiert.
Eine Mischung von 1 kg Polyoxymethylendiacetat (Molekulargewicht von etwa 30 000), 5 g l,l,l-Tris-feethylen-3'-(3",5"-diisopropyl-4"-hydroxyphenyl)-thiolopropionoxy
7-acetatf-pro-
pan und 2 g Dicyandiamid werden bei 220 C extrudiert und ergeben ein stabilisiertes Produkt.
Eine Mischung von 1 M Nylon-6,6-salz (Hexamethylendiaminadipat),
0,01 M Hexamethylendiamin und 1 Gewichts-% Tetrakis-ί/~methylen-3-(3',5·-di-tert.-butyl-4'-hydroxyphenyl)-thiolopropionoxy_7-acetatj·-methan
werden zu eine Polymerisationsrohr gegeben und 1 Stunde bei 22O°C und Atmosphärendruck
erwärmt. Dann wird die Temperatur auf 285°C gesteigert und der Druck langsam auf 1 mm vermindert. Das Rohr wird unter
diesen Bedingungen 30 Minuten gehalten, dann abgekühlt und mit Stickstoff gespült.
Das so stabilisierte Polyhexamethylenadipat zeigt weniger Färbung und Gewichtsverlust als eine unstabilisierte Probe.
