Verfahren zur Verbesserung der Färbeeigenschaften und
zur Vermeidung der Verfärbung polymerer organischer Stoffe.
Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft die Verwendung ^
von Metallsalzen bestimmter Phosphonsäuren und Phosphonsäurehalbester.
Sie beruht auf der Erkenntnis, dass diese Metallsalze neben thermischer Stabilität Polymeren, insbesondere
Polyolefinen wie Polyäthylen oder Polypropylen, Eigenschaften verleihen, die die mit freien Säuren oder HaIbestemstabilisierten
Polymeren nicht aufweisen. Es sind • dies bessere Färbbarkeit der Polymeren und geringeres
Verfärben der gefärbten und ungefärbten Polymeren, besonders unter dem Einfluss des Lichtes.

Das Metall H bedeutet z.B. ein unsubstituiertes
Metall, wie Natrium, Kadmium, Zink, Barium» Nicksi, Aluminium,
Zinn, Chrom, Kobalt, Eisen, Kupfer, Titan und Vanadin oder ein Metall in den einige Valenzen durch Alk/l abgesättigt
sind, wie Dialkylzinn. Vorzugsweise ist M ein unsubs tituiertes Metall, besonders mit der Wertigkeit 2 bis 4, wie z.B,

Kadmium, Zink, Barium, Nickel, Eisen, Kupfer, Aluminium,
Zinn, Chrom, Titan, Vanadin und Kobalt. Von diesen sind
Alumium und die Uebergangabetalle, insbesondere Nickel
bevorzugt.
Die verfügbaren Valenzen des Metalls werden durch ein oder mehrere Phoschonat- oder O-Alkylphosphonatreste und gegebenenfalls durch organische oder anorganische
Anionen abgesättigt. Bei η = 0 kann es sich dabei um ein
(e=1) oder mehrere (m=2 oder 3) Phosphonatreste und bei
r=l um eine oder mehrere ü-Alkylphosphonatreste liendein,
wobei in einigen Fällen, wie beim Aluminium oder Chrom, zur Absättigung der Valenzen drei Phosphonatgruppen mit zwei
Metallatomen eine Verbindung der Formel I mit χ - 2 bilden. Im Falle gemischter Salze sättigen ein zwei oder drei
Anionen die Valenzen ab. In allen Fällen enthalten die Verbindungen wenigstens eine Phosphonatgruppe oder wenigstens
eine O-Alkylphosphonatgruppe und n, m, ρ und χ genügen der
folgenden Bedingung:

Die Phenylgruppe des Phosphonatrestes ist durch eine
Hydroxygruppe und durch eine (z=0) oder zwei (z=l-6) niedere
Alkylgruppen mit 1-6 Kohlenstoffatomen in beliebigen Stellungen substituiert. Ein 3,5-Dialkyl-4-hydroxyphenylderivat, z.B. 3,5-Di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxybenzylphosphonat
wird bevorzugt; aber auch' andere wie 2-Hydroxy-5-alkylphenylderivate können erfindungsgemäss
Verwendung finden.

Die Verbindungen der Formel I werden nach
Üblichen Verfahren In die Polymere eingearbeitet, beispielsweise
durch Helsswalzen und anschilessendem Extrudieren, Pressen
oder Spritzglessen. Die Metallsalze der erfindungsgemäss verwendbaren Phosphonsäuren und ihrer Halbester besitzen gute
hitzestabilisierende Eigenschaften. Sie stabilisieren deshalb das Polymere gegen einen Abbau durch hohe Temperaturen, wie sie
bei der Weiterverarbeitung auftreten können. Im Gegensatz zu Polymeren, die freie Säuren oder Halbester als Stabilisatoren
enthalten, können Stoffzusammensteilungen mit einem erfindungsgemäss
verwendbaren Salz gefärbt werden. Dies geschieht entweder direkt nach der Einarbeitung des Salzes oder nach der
weiteren Verarbeitung, wie z.B. nach der Herstellung von Garnen oder Geweben. Es 1st gleichgültig in welcher Arbeitsstufe die
Färbung vorgenommen wird, da das Polymere durch das erfindungsgemäss
e Salz sowohl vor als auch nach der Färbung stabilisiert ist. Aus s er dem ist der übliche Zusatz von Antioxydantien nicht
nötig. Die gefärbten Polymere . weisen sowohl thermische Stabilität als auch Licht- und Lösungsmittelechtheit auf.
Die erfindungsgemässen Stoffzusammenstellungen können nach Verfahren gefärbt werden, die sich sonst für viele Polymere
nicht eignen. Die Färbebedingungen hängen natürlich von den speziell verwendeten Farbstoffen ab. Im allgemeinen 1st dl«

Art des Farbstoffs nicht eingeschränkt. So kann z.B. jeder
der vielen bekannten Metallkomplexfarbstoffe verwendet werden. Man kann durch Variation der Metallkationen der erflndungsgemäss
verwendbaren Verbindungen und durch die in die Polymeren eingearbeitete Menge dieser Verbindungen mit einem bestimmten
Farbstoff verschiedene Effekte erreichen. Im allgemeinen wird 0,05 bis 1O1vorzugsweise 0,1 bis 5,0 Gewichtsprozent der Verbindungen der Formel I verwendet, wobei diese Menge aber nicht
kritisch ist. Neben dem bevorzugten Polypropylen können die erfindungsgemäss verwendbaren Verbindungen auch in andere schwer
färbbare synthetische, organische homo- oder copolymere Substanzen eingearbeitet werden, zum Beispiel Vinylharze, die durch
Polymerisation von Vinylhalogenid oder durch Copolymerisation von Vinylhalogenid mit anderen ungesättigten polymerisierbaren
Verbindungen wie Vinylester, a,0-ungesättigte Säuren, a,ß-ungesättigte Ester, α,β-ungesättigte Ketone, α,β-ungesättlgte
Aldehyde und ungesättigte Kohlenwasserstoffe hergestellt werden; Poly-a-olefine wie Polymethylen, Polyäthylen, Polypropylen, Polybutylen, Polyisopren} Polyurethane wie sie aus mehrwertigen
Alkoholen und-organischen Polyisocyanaten hergestellt werden;
Polyamide wie Polyhexamethylenadipamat; Polyester wie PoIymethylenterephthalate; Polycarbonate; Polyazetate; Polystyrole;
Polyäthylenoxyd und Polyacryle wie Polyacrylnitril, sowie Mischungen der erwähnten Polymeren, wie hochschlagfestes Polystyrol, das Copolymere des Butadiens und Styrols enthält und das
Copolymerisat aus Acrylonitril, Butadien und/oder Styrol.

Die erfindungsgemäss verwendbaren Verbindungen der Formel 1
können auch dann zur Stabilisierung gegen Verfärbung verwendet werden, wenn die Polymere nicht gefärbt werden sollen.

Die Herstellung der erfindungsgemäss verwendbaren
Verbindungen erfolgt durch Behandlung einer Phosphonsäure oder deren Halbester der Formel:

worin Z Wasserstoff oder Alkyl bedeutet, mit einem Metallchlorid. Vorzugsweise wird ein Alkalisalz der Formel VIII
verwendet. Im allgemeinen wird das Produkt nach kurzer Zeit gebildet und muss nur von Nebenprodukten, Lösungsmitteln
und nicht umgesetzten Ausgangsmaterialien befreit werden.
Die gemischten Salze können durch Umsetzung einer Phosphonsäure oder eines Halbesters der Formel VIII mit mehr
als der stöchiometrlsch äquivalenten Menge eines Metallderivates, wie z.B. eines Metallhalogenide, Carboxylate, Phenolates,
Alkylsulfats, Alkylphosphats, Nitrats, Cyanides, Cyanates,
Rhodanates und Sulfates hergestellt werden. Es ist jedoch vorzuziehen, ein leicht herstellbares Salz der Verbindungen
der Formel VIII, wie z.B. das Natriumsalz mit einem geeigneten Metallsalz umzusetzen. Auf diese Weise wird z.B. Nickel-(0-butyl-3,5-di-tert.butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl-phosphonat)-chlorid
aus Natrium-(O-butyl-3,5-di-tert. butyl- 4-hydroxybenzylphosphonat)
und Nickelchlorid hergestellt.
Wie vorstehend erwähnt besitzen die erfindungsgemäss

verwendeten Metallsalze und Komplexe unerwartet wertvolle Eigenschaften, indem sie die Färbbarkeit von Polymeren verbessern
und gleichzeitig diese gegen Oxydation, gegen thermische Zersetzung und gegen schädliche Lichteinflüsse, insbesondere gegen
Ultravioletstrahlung. schützen. Die erfindungsgemässen Verbindungen
zeigen diese Kombination von Eigenschaften in einem Grade, der bisher nicht in dieser Weise erreicht wurde. Ueberdies sind die
Färbungen wasch- und trockenreinigungsecht.
Die folgenden Beispiele erläutern die Erfindung ohne sie zu beschränken.

Die nachfolgend erwähnten erfindungsgemässen
Metallsalze und Komplexe werden mit Polypropylen in einer Konzentration von 0,5# zu 0,13 mm dicken Filmen verschmolzen.
Diese Filme werden dann mit einem orangenen Farbstoff folgender Struktur gefärbt,

Die Polypropylenfilme enthalten die folgenden Metallsalze:
Kadmium-bis-(0-n-butyl-3,5-di-tert.butyl-4-hydroxybenzylphosphonat)
Barium-bis-(0-n-butyl-3,5-di-tert.butyl-4-hydroxybenzylphosphonat)
Nickel-bis-(0-n-butyl-3,5-di-tert.butyl-4-hydroxybenzylphosphonat)
Nickel-(0-n-butyl-3,5-di-tert.butyl-4-hydroxybenzylphosphonat)-chlorid
Nickel-bis-(0-n-octadecyl-3,5-di-tert.butyl-4-hydroxybenzylphosphonat)
Nickel-(0-n-octadecyl-3,5-di-tert.butyl-4-hydroxybenzylphosphonat)-chlorid
Cobalt-bis-(0-n-butyl-3,5-di-tert.butyl-4-hydroxybenzylphosphonat)

Im Gegensatz dazu kann Polypropylen,welches die
erfindungsgemassen Salze nicht enthält, nicht gut gefärbt werden.

0,5 Gew.% der erfindungsgemässen Metallsalze oder
Komplexe werden in Polypropylen verarbeitet und als 0,64 mm dicke Platten in einem Fadeometer belichtet, wobei die Zeit
bis zum Sprödewerden und Verfärben bestimmt wird. Es wird für das mit den folgenden Salzen oder Komplexen stabilisierte
Polypropylen folgende Zeiten erreicht.

Geformtes Nylon 6 das 0,5 Gew.% Nickel-bis-(0-n-butyl-3,5-di-tert.butyl-4rhydroxybenzylphosphonat)
enthält, wird im Fadeometer belichtet, wobei durch den Zusatz des Nickelsalzes
die Vergilbung wesentlich verzögert wird.
100 Teile Polyvinylchlorid (Goodyear Geon 103 EP) das 2 Teile Dibutylzinnmaleat und 0,5 Teile Stearinsäure enthält,
wird zu Platten geformt und in einem Luftumwälzungsofen einer Temperatur von 1800C ausgesetzt. Das Polyvinylchlorid wird nach
160 Min. gelb und nach 200 Min. schwarz. Im Gegensatz dazu bleibt Polyvinylchlorid mit 1,0 Gew.% Nickel-bis-(0-n-octadecyl-3,5-di-tert.butyl-4-hydroxybenzylphosphonat)
eine viel längere Zeit unverändert.
Das Copolymere aus Acrylnitril, Butadien und Styrol, das 1,0 Gew.% Nickel-bis-(0-n-octadecyl-3,5-di-tert.butyl-4-hydroxybenzylphosphonat)
enthält, bleibt bei 1200C länger unverfärbt, als das nicht stabilisierte Copolymere.
Polyurethan, das 1,0 Gew.% Nickel-bis-(0-n-butyl-3,5-ditert.butyl-4-hydroxybenzylphosphonat)
enthält, 1st gegen Belichtung mit UV-Strahlen beständiger als nicht stabilisiertes
Polyurethan.

Claims (5)
1. Verfahren zur Verbesserung der Färbeeigenschaften und zur Vermeidung der Verfärbung synthetischer polymerer organischer
Stoffe, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass man denselben eine geringe Menge einer Verbindung der allgemeinen Formel I
