Tabulating machine for storytelling using punch cards. It was usual practice to equip tabulating machines, such as Powers machines, for example, with alphabetical sectors, to translate the meaning of the holes in a spelling field on a map. These alphabetical sectors contained more characters than the usual numerical sectors.
Adjusting these sectors to align the chosen character on the print line therefore required a long glue time, so tabulating machines equipped with alphabetic sectors had to operate at considerably high speeds. smaller than those which were not provided with this equipment.
In conventional Powers machines, the punch cards are first stacked in a magazine, from which they are ejected one after the other, and brought to a feeler box, in which the cards are temporarily held during the transfer. - mission and the corresponding translation, and a "condition" corresponding to this translation is then placed in a stop basket, before the character-carrying sectors are subscribed and brought into the printing position.
This being done, the card is brought and stacked in a receiving magazine, and a new card is transferred forward to be translated for a new print line.
The object of the present invention is a tabulator machine for storytelling using punched cards, having pairs of typing sectors of characters, each pair comprising a sector carrying characters, normally coupled to a stop sector, but being able to effect a movement with respect to said stop sector, the movement of which is controlled by stops placed in position by the perforations on said cards.
This machine is characterized by the fact that the pairs of typing sectors, during their maximum stroke, perform a practically continuous movement, forward in the typing position and backward in the normal position, during their maximum stroke. of the continuous rotation of a shaft which controls the movement of said pairs of sectors.
The accompanying drawings represent, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine, object of the invention, this machine being of the Powers type, for example of the type - of the machine described - in the Swiss patent. No. 176160 of September 8, <B> 1931, </B> by the same inventor.

Fig. 8 is a front view of the characters - of a character carrier sector.
In the machine shown, a stack of punched cards 10, previously grouped, is first introduced into a magazine 11. During the regular operation of the machine, the cards are ejected one by one from this magazine, and are tabulated. individually.
The cards are extracted from the stack by means of an extractor knife 12, which is connected to an arm 13 of a gripping mechanism, and the cards are then seized successively by a pair of feed rollers. nement 14 and 15, arranged so as to move the card backwards and bring it against a card stopper 16 which holds the card stationary between a pair of boxes of feeler needles, marked with a generally by reference numbers 17 and 18.
While the card is held in the feeling position, the lower feeling needle box 18 is moved upwards by a mechanism comprising a connecting rod embracing an eccentric disc 19 fixed to a main shaft 20. This main shaft is driven. in continuous rotation by a power source of the usual type, an electric motor for example (not shown). Tree 20 makes one turn per tabulated card, and this turn corresponds to one cycle.
The lower needle box 18 comprises a number of sets of rows of feeler needles 21, corresponding to all the possible perforations of the cards.
If there are no holes in the card to tabulate or feel, the needles 21 are retained when they strike the card, as is the case with the single needle 21 shown in FIG. 1.
If, on the other hand, there is a hole aligned with any one or more of the feeling needles 21, this or these needle (s) is not stopped by the card and, as a result of the movement of the needle box 18, it through the corresponding hole in the card.
Just before the needles which pass through the holes in the card strike the upper needles associated with them, they are blocked and held fixed with respect to the needle box 18, by means of a series of blocking slides. 22, connected with a universal cam bar 23, which moves with the needle box 18. The universal bar 23 is controlled by a fixed cam 27, the shape of which is such that the aforementioned blocking is produce when needed.
The continued upward movement of the needle box 18 has the effect of positively lifting corresponding metallic threads 25 disposed in a transfer apparatus 26 of a well-known type. set up corresponding stops 65, to determine the amplitude -of movement -of the jug-holder sectors 35.
At about the time when the needle box 18 has reached its uppermost position, the upper needles 24 are locked in their lifting position by locking sliders 28: with springs, which coo pate with locking pins. locking -of these needles 24. The needles 24 remain in their adjustment position, raised, while the needle box 18 returns backwards, under the effect of the continuous rotation of the eccentric 19. When the needle box needles 18 has roughly reached the position for which the needles are completely out of the perforated card, the fixed cam 27 actuates the universal bar 23, so as to release the jammed feelers 21.
As soon as the punched card has been released from the needles 21, the card stopper 16 is lifted up and the card which has just been felt is brought and drawn forward by pairs of drive rollers 15 and 29 towards one. stacking magazine 30.
The alphabetic character printing mechanism comprises a series of pairs of typing sectors, each pair comprising a sector 35 carrying characters, normally coupled to a stop sector 83. Sector 35 carries a number of characters. 36 spring-erased characters; the stop sector 83 is connected to 35 by a lug 84 fixed to, 35 and on which acts a spring latch 81 pivoting on the sector 83.
Sectors 35 and 83 tend to rotate relative to each other under the effect of a tension spring 86 which connects a cleat 8 7 of sector 35 with a bell lever 88 which pivots. on the sector 83 and which pushes the latch 81 towards the position shown in FIG. 2. When the components are latched together as shown in fig. 2, they move as a block and can subsequently take one of eleven different positions which can be determined by the upward projection of any of the stops 65.
If the latch 81 is put out of action, the spring 86 causes a relative movement between the sectors 35 and 83, a movement whose amplitude corresponds to the total amplitude when the two sectors are latched together.
The length of the slot 85 is such that it allows the sector 35 to move -by twelve characters in length relative to the sector 83, so that when the sectors are unlocked and the transceiver 83 is still in hand. held by stopper 64, sector 35 will move independently a sufficient distance to bring the first character of the second group into the operating position. If a stopper 65 is put in position, the sector 83 will move the number of characters fixed by the position of the stopper.
Thanks to: this simple construction, the character-carrying sector 35 can carry twice as many characters as there are different positions determined by the stops 65. The front edges of the arms of the sectors 35 and 83 have a stepped position when these sectors are locked together, as shown by the two parallel or roughly parallel lines indicated in dotted lines near the universal erase bar <B> 39, </B> in fig. 2.
Bar 39 is referred to as a universal erase bar because its primary function is to return sections 35 and 83 to their normal positions after a record operation.
<B> It </B> -is of course that during a machine operation the universal erase bar 39 moves forward and upward to allow @ the pair -of sectors 35 -83 to take different positions, following the withdrawal of a spring 60 which extends from a hook attached to the bar @ dechssis'57 to a # proIougemenM -of sector 35.
It has been indicated above that the differential stops 65 are brought into position by a reciprocating movement of the feeler box 18 during the tabulation of a punched card. Each of the stops 65 has a: lug 71, which is arranged in front of a cam surface 72, which is associated therewith, of a slide 66 indirectly subjected to the action of a spring.
This slide 66 is mounted, so as to have a transverse sliding movement, on rods por ted by the frame. The front end of a 4th bell lever 70 carries the zero stop 64 which pivots on it; it follows that when any differential stop 65 is raised, its lug 71, cooperating with the calming surface 72, pushes the bar 66 backwards, so as to tilt the doorbell lever 70 and cause the removal of zero stop 64.
On the mechanism which has just been described, any reference to the unlatching or unblocking of sectors 35 and 83 has been omitted, so that only eleven different positions can be determined by the mechanism as it has been -described. An additional differential position could be obtained by simply disconnecting the sectors 35 and 83. This result is obtained by lifting a deooling member 80 by means of a metal wire 25, in exactly the same way as one lifts the stops 65.
This lifting movement has the effect of tilting the latch 81 counterclockwise, so that it releases the lug 84 which is fixed to the sector 35, and thus allows the spring 86 to -move sectors 35 and 83 with respect to each other. If one -of the stops 65 is disposed along -de the .d6co-n- nexion member 80, the character 36 which will be put in position is determined by the stop 65 then placed, and the total amplitude of the relative movement of sectors 35 and 83.
This position is shown in fig. 7. In this way, a total of 23 alphabetical stops are obtained (an additional one is obtained by simply lifting the disconnection member 80). Referring to fig. 2 and 6, it can be seen that the universal erase bar 39 is carried at the lower ends of a pair of frames 40 pivoting on the support shaft 37. These arms are articulated by means of pi vots 45 fixed on them - to connecting rods 44 which nd # ent towards the rear up to the <B> 'summer </B> articulation pivots 43 of cranks 41.
Each of the cranks 41 is fixed, by means of rivets 47, to a pinion 46 with a long hub (FIG. 5). Each of the hubs of these pinions is keyed to a shaft 42, so as to rotate with it. Each of the pinions 46 meshes with neighboring pinions 54, keyed on a drive shaft 50.
A complete revolution of the shaft 50 causes a corresponding complete revolution of the cranks 41, which has the effect of moving the universal erase bar 39 forwards and upwards, as shown in FIG. 7, and thence to the position shown in fig. 2, and during this movement the characters 36 are brought into position on the print line. plates 95, under the control of the stops 65 previously installed, or under the combined control of the disconnection member 80 and -stops 65.
The shaft 50 is an auxiliary main shaft which is connected by a pair of bevel gears 52 (Fig. 1) having the same number of teeth, to a connection shaft 53, supported by the frame, and extending towards the bottom, the lower end of this shaft terminating in one of the pinions 51 of a pair of similar conical pins, the other of which is wedged on the main shaft 20. The main shaft 20 turns in the direction of the arrow shown in fig. 1 and, consequently, the shaft 50. rotates in the opposite direction, but with the same angular speed.
To achieve printing by means of the characters set in position, there is a series of spring-loaded printing hammers 97 which freely vote on a shaft 118 carried by the seated ch "of the printing member. Printing hammers 97 are normally held in the withdrawn position by: spring-loaded latches 104 which hook behind a tooth provided at the lower end of these hammers, as shown in Fig. 2.
On each of the latches 104 pivots, approximately in its midpoint, a spring-loaded spacer 103, which is disposed above the arm -directed towards the front of a corresponding bell-lever 98 which pivots freely on a shaft 99 carried by the frame of the printing member.
When a character carrier sector 35 moves from its normal position shown in FIG. 2 up to that determined by a stop 65 whatever conch, a cam surface 101 comes into contact with the arm directed towards the rear of the doorbell lever 98, so as to tilt this arm. downwards and therefore slightly lift the spacer <B> 103. </B> When the:
selected character 36 has been brought into position at the print line, ie when the universal bar 39 has reached the position shown in FIG. 7, a second universal bar 119 for releasing the hammers has tilted until it takes approximately the position shown in FIG. 7 and, in this position, it has pushed forward all the intermediate elements 103, so as to release the latches 104 and to allow the springs 109 of the corresponding impression hammers <B> 97,
</B> to trigger and strike against the character 36 which is then in position. In known machines, the printing hammers usually return to a position substantially at right angles to the printing position. In the machine shown here, they are extended in the direction of the strike point, so as to increase the: weight of the hammers and significantly reduce the arc -described during their movement, for example to have an arc of 60 to 30 .
The bar 119 is carried by a pair of arms fixed to the shaft 118. This bar is also a universal erasure bar, because it serves to return the character hammers to their normal position after a typing operation. The two bars 39 and 119 moreover allow the springs to advance the sectors and hammers -de characters.
The expression "universal" is used to indicate that the bar is common to a number of similar members, that is to say the character carriers, the stop sectors and the character hammers. are all controlled or brought back to normal position by a common bar. Also attached to the shaft 118 is an arm 120 to which is hinged a downwardly directed link 121 hinged at 125 to a totalizer engagement and disengagement cam sector, which is indicated at 122, and attached to main oscillation shaft 123.
On this: shaft 123 is fixed an arm 129 (fig. 1) <B> to </B> the upper end of which pivots a member 128 directed towards the rear and articulated on an axis 127 carried by a crank 126 fixed to the control shaft 50. When the pGrte-character sectors have been brought back from their normal position, the cam 101: cooperates with the arm 98 so that the spring fixed to the intermediate member 108 lower the rear end and move it out of the way of hammer release bar 119.
It follows that a print hammer 97 will not: be & clipped: unless the character carrier sector associated with it is moved from its normal or zero position. Each of the sectors 35 has a rearwardly directed part 65a, which abuts against a fixed part of the frame, so as to limit the continuation of the rearward movement.
When said rearward-facing part is stopped, during the return stroke of the universal erase bar 39, the sector 83 is pulled back, independently of the sector 35, by the effect of: the spring 86 , and this independent movement continues until the latch, spring 81 comes into engagement with the lug 84, which thus again connects the sectors 35 and 83.
Each of the printing hammers 97 has a forward-facing finger 117, which contacts the rear-facing end of a spring-loaded buffer arm 112, associated therewith, just before the hammer 9 7 has reached the character set in position, as: this is shown in fig. 4. Each of the pads 112 is freely fixed on a shaft 113 carried by a printing element, and is maintained in its normal position shown in FIGS. 2 and 4 by a spring 115 which is strong in comparison to the reduced force of the springs 109 serving to release the printing hammers.
The printing hammers are released when the crank pins 43, of the cranks 41 have approximately reached their bottom dead center, as shown in fig. 7. It follows that part of the force of the printing hammers which move is absorbed by the partial tensioning of the springs 115, and that the remainder is used to: give the necessary shock to -l ' impression.
The partially tensioned springs 115 then slightly move the hammers 97 apart to the position shown in FIG. 4, thus allowing the sectors 35 to begin their return movements, before the printing hammers are cocked. The hammers are not returned by bar 119, until crankpin 48 has traveled a considerable distance beyond its bottom dead center.
As a result, the partial removal of the hammers by the springs 115 allows much faster operation of sectors 35 and 83.
During a total printing cycle, the machine performs a dead cycle, which is used to return the unshipped transfer members (if any) to position, followed by a total take operation. It is a good idea to turn off the alphabetic printing hammers during these cycles, -because the sectors may be released from time to time during the change of operation.
Referring to fig. 1, it can be seen that a second slider 138 is associated with the intermediate guilles 24. This slider 138 is pressed rearwardly by a spring, as has been more fully described in Swiss Patent No. 176160, which has been indicated above. Intermediate needles, adjustable by hand, can be placed between the ends of a series, chosen in advance, of sliders 138,
and of a universal worm bar 135 serving to connect the total grip shaft 139, by a ratchet and ratchet mechanism, with the main shaft 20, to intermittently rotate this shaft 139 This connection is made when any one or more of the sliders 138, chosen in advance, has moved the corresponding intermediate needle chosen in advance in the event of a change in the positioning or in the release of the needle. needle 24.
This movement -of the slides 138 is obtained by means of lugs forming part of the guilles 24 chosen in advance. Bar 135 is a universal bar or common to all character hammers and, during a totalizing operation, this bar is placed in position to engage with the cleats at the ends of the character hammers.
The purpose of this bar is to prevent these character hammers from coming into print position in the event that any of these character hammers have been accidentally triggered during the spacing operation which ordinarily precedes the o totalization operation itself.
The object of this spacing operation is to bring the transmission mechanisms of the tabulation mechanism back to the normal position and, moreover, we do not want to perform a typing operation during this spacing operation. The bar 135 may be called a "universal locking bar" because when it is actuated it locks the hammers of this type and prevents them from making a striking movement. The total pick-up shaft 139 has a cam 155 for rocking a doorbell lever 157 pivoting at 158.
This doorbell lever is connected, by a link 156, to the usual .de total taking shaft, .de. calculator head, so as to allow the passage -from an accumulation cycle to a total taking cycle, as has been described more fully in Swiss Patent No. 176160 by the same inventor. A shaft 139 is also fixed a .came 140, which is arranged so -to actuate a spring bell lever 141 pivoting at 143.
The forward-directed arm of the doorbell lever carries a link 144, articulated on it, and the other end of which is articulated to a pivot 147 carried by the rocking arm 145, which in turn pivots on it. the shaft 146 supported by the frame. The forward-facing arm of the rocker unit 145 is pivotally connected to a link 148, which in turn
swivels in 149 on the universal locking bar 135 of the hammers. The normal position of the locking bar 135 has been shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This position corresponds to one of the notches in the cam 140. As soon as the shaft 139 has partially turned, the locking worm bar 135 has also turned partially upwards, so that its lower edge The ripper is in the way of the tooth of the impression hammer 97, which is normally nested by the latch 104.
As a result, the release of the latches 104 only allows the hammers 97 to move upwards a short distance, and thus prevents the printing action, as shown in FIG. 7. Lock bar 135 is in position during the dead cycle and the totalizing cycle, shown above. When the shaft 139 has made a partial rotation, just after the completion of the totalization cycle, as has been more fully described in the aforementioned Swiss patent, the doorbell lever 141 resiliently returns,
under the action of its spring, in its normal position, shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, so as to allow the printing of alphabetic characters.
