Process for the preparation of a dinaphthyl dicarboxylic acid. It has been found that dinaphthyl dicarboxylic acids of the general formula: (C1oX6) 2 (000g) 2 are formed when the diazo compounds of aminonaphthoic acids of the general formula.

with a reducing agent,
especially treated with ammoniacal copper hydride solution.
In the above formulas, the .X's denote hydrogen atoms, one or more of which can be replaced by a monovalent substituent. The dinaphthyl-dicarboxylic acids, their derivatives and core substitution products are important intermediate products for the preparation of vat dyes.
The present patent relates to a process for the preparation of the 4,4'-dichloro-1,1'-dinaphthyl-8.8'-dicarboxylic acid of the formula

by treating the diazo compound of 4-chloro-1 .8-aminonaphthoic acid with a reducing agent.
The 4.4'-dichloro-1. 1'-Dinaphthyl-8.8'-dicarboxylic acid is a dry colorless powder that melts over <B> 300 '</B> and dissolves in organic solvents in the heat, is soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid with a red color, which is soluble when heated turns green. - example:
200 parts of chloronaphthostyril (obtained according to Eckstrand'Journ. F. Prakt. Chemie, vol. 38, page 181 or by direct chlorination of naphthostyril) are converted into 1-amino-4-chloronaphthalene-8 by boiling with 10% alkali -carboxylic acid converted.
The alkaline solution is blunted with acid until the reaction is only slightly alkaline, 70 parts of sodium nitrite are added and the solution is diazotized by running it into hydrochloric acid. The solution or The suspension of the diazo compound is added at ordinary temperature to a copper oxide solution prepared from 500 parts of vitriol (prepared for example as described in the example of the main patent).
After the diazo reaction has disappeared, slight impurities are filtered out and 4,4'-dichloro-1 is obtained from the clear filtrate by adding hydrochloric acid. 1'-dinaphthyl-8. 8'-dicarboxylic acid brought to the separation.
Other reducing agents, such as a neutral sodium sulfite solution or a ferrous salt solution, can also be used. .
